WONDERS:

“The term wonder is simply the amazed admiration or awe, especially at something very beautiful or new. Wonder may also be described as a miracle or other cause of intense admiration. And wonders are all those things which are so good or admirable as to inspire us to think deeply.”

THE SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLD:

The seven wonders of the world are usually taken to be the seven wonders of the ancient world. Some of the wonders we know today are not in the list of the Seven

Wonders of the World, as they are classified to be modern or medieval wonders. But the commonly known seven wonders of the world are:

1. Egypt’s Great Pyramids: It is the one and only wonders which does not require a description by early historians and poets. It is the one and only wonders that does not need speculations concerning its appearance, size, and shape.

2. Taj Mahal Agra (Tajganj), India: - Located at Agra in Uttar Pradesh, the Taj Mahal is one of the most splendid masterpieces of architecture in the world. Taj Mahal was constructed over a period of twenty-two years, employing twenty thousand workers. It stands on a raised, square platform (186 x 186 feet) with its four corners truncated, forming an unequal octagon.

3. Grand Canyon: The Grand Canyon of the Colorado River is the largest gorge in the world-a 290-mile-long gash across the face of

Page 5: Seven Wonders

the Colorado Plateau in northern Arizona. Rim to rim, it measures up to 18 miles across, with an average width of 10 miles; its average depth is one mile.

4. Panama Canal: The Panama Canal is Between the pacific and Atlantic Oceans. It was constructed in two stages (i-e) from 1881 to 1888 and then from 1904 to 1914. It’s length is approximately 51 miles.

5. Empire State Building (New York): With office suites to suit almost any firm or organization, the building's modernization program has made it a rare find indeed for those lucky enough to occupy it. The Empire State Building is located at Fifth and 34th Avenues of New York. The total cost to construct the skyscraper was $40,948,000, including the cost of the land. The building alone was constructed with a little over $24,000,000. The total height of the building is 1,454 feet. There are 102 floors and 6,500 windows. Originally, the building's dirigible mast, now the base of the TV tower, was designed as a mooring mast for blimps.

6. St Peter’s basilica: The Basilica of Saint Peter, officially known in Italian as the Basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano and colloquially called Saint Peter's Basilica, ranks second among the five major basilicas of Rome and its Vatican City enclave. The second largest church in Christianity, it covers an area of 23,000 m² (5.7 acres); and has a capacity of over 60,000 people. One of the holiest sites of Christendom.

7. China’s Great wall: The Great Wall of China, one of the greatest wonders of the world, was enlisted in the World Heritage by UNESCO in 1987. Just like a gigantic dragon, the Great Wall winds up and down across deserts, grasslands, mountains and plateaus stretching approximately 6,700 kilometers (4,163 miles ) from east to west of China.

THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STORY

A group of students were asked to list what they thought were the present Seven Wonders of the World. Though there were some disagreements the following received the most votes:

1. Egypt’s Great Pyramids2. Taj Mahal3. Grand Canyon4. Panama Canal5. Empire State Building6. St Peter’s basilica7. China’s Great wall

While gathering the votes the teacher noted that one of her students had not finished her paper yet. So the teacher asked the girl if she was having any trouble with her list. The girl replied:“Yes a little. I couldn’t quite make up my mind as there were so many”The teacher said:“Well tell us what you have and maybe we can help.”The girl hesitated, then read, “I think the seven wonders of the world are:

1. To touch2. To taste3. To feel4. To see5. To hear6. To love7. To laugh

The room was so quiet that u could have heard a pin dropThe things we overlook as simple and ordinary and what we take for granted are truly wondrous!!! A Gentle reminder: The most precious things in life cannot be built by hand or bought by man.

THE TRUE WONDERS OF LIFE:

Wonder begins in the senses, comes alive in the imagination, and flourishes in adoration of the Divine. It arises from our natural curiosity about the grand adventure of life. It increases our capacity to be a bold inner space tripper and an avid explorer of the physical world.

There is no end to the things that can awaken our wonder, from the majesty of the night sky to the smell of lilacs in the spring to the turning of the leaves in the fall. And it is all right here, a feast of epiphanies and astonishments in the daily round of our spiritual lives.

The first step in this spiritual practice is to rejoice in the play of our senses: smell, touch, and taste, hear, and see. And the wonders of this world created by the Lord Almighty do not stop here. Each of His creation is a wonder. It compels us to think what our life would have been if these blessings and these wonders wouldn’t be there.

Page 9: Seven Wonders

THE BLESSING OF SIGHT:

Our senses are the way we find out about the world we live in. We learn with our senses. We see with our eyes, and sight tells us about things that are outside of our bodies. Our eyes give us pictures, or images, of the way things look. You can see to read, to tell where you're going, to play games or to find your friends. Your eyes show you light, color, shape, and size. Your eyes can help you decide how far something is.

To some degree, many of us go about in a self-imposed obscurity, refusing to open our eyes and see a God-created world, full of unfailing inventiveness and love. Instead, we are "frequently upset by the imperfections and blemishes" that we perceive.

Even the most benign light can be frightening to an eye accustomed to darkness. It takes courage to open one's eyes. We are afraid, lest we be overwhelmed by an unintelligible reality. Lest we find ourselves unable to cope, we keep our eyes closed, even to the good things.

Just as we understand that we must open our mouths to enjoy the taste of foods, so the enjoyment of the world in general requires that we open our eyes, that we broaden our perceptions. We may find that we inhabit a world that consists not only of darkness and evil, but also of light and good.

Page 10: Seven Wonders

THE BLESSING OF BEING ABLE TO LAUGH:

You know the importance of laughter. Yet you do not laugh. You think that your serious and dignified look and nervous manners are signs of manhood. You also believe that a laughing woman is light hearted or idiotic. Yet you read in books that laughter has got several advantages. Doctors emphasize the importance of laughter. They prescribe it as a cure for a number of diseases. These days people appear as though they are about to receive some tragic news. No sense of humor, no willingness to share a joke and no witty conversation. If at all you venture to tell a joke, people take it as some thing serious and it will be another problem to get out of the embarrassment of a misunderstood joke. Therefore hardly any one tells a joke. Consequently, sources of humour are drying up and we have to import jokes from other societies.

Now is the time to resolve that we will consciously make an effort to laugh frequently throughout the day. Of course, as we do so, we will laugh with people - not at them. We will laugh at what people do, not at what people are. We will laugh not only to lighten our burdens, but those of everyone we meet.

Remember, a person without a sense of humor is like a car without shock absorbers.Laughter adds spice to life; it is to life what salt is to a hard-boiled egg.

Develop your sense of humor and you will find you are more productive, a better communicator, and a superior team player.

Everyone loves someone who can make them laugh. The more you share your sense of humor, the more friends you will have.

The most wasted day is that in which we have not laughed. Don't wait until you are sick before you begin practicing laughter therapy.Laugh! It is the cheapest cure when every thing else is costly.

SENSE OF SMELL AND TASTE:

These two senses smell which is also called as Olfaction and the sense of taste have great importance in our daily life .Without these sense our world seems so emptier. Our senses of taste and smell provide a window on the chemical world around us. Our two senses smell and taste add pleasure in life and colors in our world.

These senses are as important as the other senses like sight, hearing etc. The loss of our ability to taste or to smell would have the same negative impact on our lives that sudden deafness, or even more so, blindness, would have.

Can you imagine a life without your senses of smell or taste? Memories of awakening to the smell of a hot breakfast filling the house would not exist. Your favorite food would seem just like any other food, or for that matter, like an empty spoon. Colorful, fresh-cut spring flowers would have the appeal of brown autumn leaves. One would never know that the last glass of milk in the refrigerator was spoiled until the first nauseating gulp filled the mouth. The special scents of loved ones would no longer be there to remain with you even after that person had left your side.

"Nothing is more memorable than a smell. One scent can be unexpected, momentary and fleeting, yet conjure up a childhood summer beside a lake in the mountains; another, a moonlit beach; a third, a family dinner of pot roast and sweet potatoes during a myrtle-mad August in a Midwestern town. Smells detonate softly in our memory like poignant land mines hidden under the weedy mass of years. Hit a tripwire of smell and memories explode all at once. A complex vision leaps out of the undergrowth. "-- Diane Ackerman, a Natural History of the Senses

. Loss of smell also means not being able to smell flowers, fresh baked bread, a child or lover, and many other pleasures of life that most of us take for granted. The emotional consequences of losing the sense of smell are usually underestimated. Here are only a few of the many feelings and emotions that people may experience after they lose their sense of smell: · anger · feeling vulnerable · feeling isolated and different · being concerned about bad breath and body odor · depression · feeling powerless · feeling unsupported · feelings of loss of control.

Page 12: Seven Wonders

It should be noted that in many cases, loss of sense of taste is actually the result of loss of sense of smell, despite a normally working taste system. Whenever foods are placed in the mouth, vapors pass up the back of the throat and reach the smell sensors in the nose. Thus the "flavor" of foods is actually a combination of the taste, as picked up by the taste buds on the tongue, and the smell picked up by the smell sensors in the nose. When the sense of smell is lost, a severe reduction in the "flavor" of foods is appreciated for this reason, even when the taste system is working normally.

THE ABILITY TO FEEL:

Feelings are the expression and sensation of emotion; created, expressed and stored in the emotional body.Basically the all other senses are all due to the sense of feeling. Actually feeling is not a particular sense it is the emotion by which we can feel all senses like sight, touch .hearing etc.“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen, nor touched ... but are felt in the heart”. HELEN KELLER

Feeling is the part of every activity which we do and which we did.

Sometimes it feels a joy and some times it looks like a great

sorrow. This all is our way to feel any activity or events which

happen in our life. It is due the sense of feeling that a blind person

can feel the glories of the world.

Feelings are the basic essence of our lives, by these feelings we can

show our emotions. Sometimes we feel good, and sometimes we feel bad. Both kinds of

feelings are normal. Of course, we all enjoy good feelings which may count excitement,

joy, happiness, confidence and so many other feeling which are pleasant for us which we

need but there are so many others which we do not need but they are the part of are life

like, afraid, sadness, embarrassed and agreed and so on.

These all are the feelings which we feel in daily life which are the part of our lives.

Page 13: Seven Wonders

THE SENSE OF TOUCH A BLESSING:

We all take the things with which we have been blessed, for granted. We realize the importance of things only when we are deprived of them or have to experience a loss. But it’s much better to realize the importance of such blessings beforehand. One of these blessings is the wonderful sense of touch.

The importance of the sense of touch can be explained from a simple and common observation. Suppose there is a child and who sees fire for the first time. The child, obviously, doesn’t know that the fire is harmful. The child however is very much attracted towards it by its blaze and its color. He likes it so much that it leads him to outstretch his arm and touch the thing. Obviously his parents don’t let him go forward. And keep on telling him that he’ll get hurt by the flames. But the child, out of sheer curiosity, still touches it whenever he gets the chance to hide from anyone’s view. Only by touching that fire himself, does he get to know and understand that the fire burns the skin. After that no matter how much anyone forces him to go near the fire he will stay away from it. This simple observation shows us the importance of the sense of touch in our lives. Without this sense we would not be able to know what is harmful for us and what is not. What feels good and what doesn’t.

From cuddling a newborn baby to comforting an elderly parent, our lives are defined, nurtured, and sustained by the sense of touch.

We have all experienced moments when the touch of a hand on our shoulder or a reassuring hug was all that was needed to reduce our fear, anxiety, or loneliness. Touching is an act of love, a way of communicating without words.

Touching can reassure us, relax us, comfort us, or arouse us, like nothing else. In a way, the importance of touch is so basic that we tend to take it for granted, just as we do breathing. But its importance can be clearly perceived by looking at all those people who are suffering from the loss of this sense. We all know that love, encouragement and the feelings of assurity are all derived from the sense of touch. The ability to touch makes life so much more beautiful and the world so much easier to live in.

Page 14: Seven Wonders

TO LOVE AND TO BE LOVED:

We all need love. We cannot live without it. Unfortunately love is not at the supermarket and our hearts are not for sale. Don't believe that love is a safe shelter.

Love is a slow discovery of a smile that stays with you.Love is a feeling that stays after you part.Love is memory that shimmers like sun on the ocean.Love is unstopable. It is everywhere. It is as close as your breath and as far away as the stars.

We cannot exist in any part of life without love. And to be true, it has to be universal love.

Love thy neighbor as thy self." And my neighbor is not just one who is sitting next to me, but everybody is my neighbor, including trees, animals, birds, and insects. If a person says, "I love my wife," it may not be a lie. But you cannot love your wife and not love everybody else. This light cannot shine only for you. The sun is universal. Air, light, water-God gave to everybody. Essentials of life are free. Love is an essentiality. We cannot live without love. We cannot have been born without love. And if we die without love, that would be a terrible death, a death in isolation, in misery, in hopelessness. To being able to love is a blessing. Having all those people that we love in our lives is surely a Gift from God. And experiencing the love of everyone around us is something that must be cherished. Not something to be taken for granted.

The love of a Mother is something that shows the height of love. Even our Allah has said that he loves his creation seventy times more than a Mother loves her childThis clearly shows that a Mother’s love is derived from Allah’s love. Even apart from this the simple feeling of love, of caring for someone is a wonder. And it’s a feeling that should be cherished as without it life would be a living hell.

God gives us many blessings To cheer us day by day, The sunshine and the flowers,And friends along the way,The comforts we enjoy,The peace from up above,And among our many blessings

Page 15: Seven Wonders

Is the precious gift of love.

CONCLUSION

The small and simple things have so much importance in our lives that we cannot even imagine to live without them. These are the real wonders of our lives. Indifference that

listless, blasé, and detached feeling are the contrast to wonder. We can never be astonished, awestruck, or surprised when we are either overwhelmed or under whelmed. Feeling the first, we don't notice the subtle blessings in our surroundings; we don't take the time to stop and smell the roses. Feeling under whelmed, we couldn't care less. "So

what?" becomes our response instead of "ah-ha!" Wonder is an antidote to both conditions. Yet, by and large, most of us go through life taking sight, smell, touch,

hearing, and tasting for granted. The senses are our links to the world around us. And even more importantly, they are the ties that bind us to those we love. And the creations of man which we term as wonders of the world are also derived by and are the creations of the mind and the talent. This mind and these talents are also a wonder and a blessing from Allah. We do appreciate these material possessions but unfortunately fail to praise the real force behind them. Its time we all realize what our real gifts are and start giving

importance to them.

RECOMMENDATION:

Keeping in view the lessons learned it is recommended for every reader that we should learn to cherish our possessions, the things we take for granted. For this purpose we should all develop a habit of thinking deeply and thanking our Allah for His blessings. Other than this we should also become a part of the discussion groups of scholars and analysts. And be regular in offering prayers five times a day. This spiritual practice spices up our life with a constant parade of new delights. Most glorious of all, it enhances sensuousness, that elixir that keeps us forever young in spirit!
