Intended AudienceThis symposium is intended for primary-care providers, cardiologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, nutritionists, health coaches and all specialists dealing with patients at risk for cardiovascular disease.

Course DescriptionPhysicians and other health-care providers require frequent updates on research findings and treatment options in order to provide the most informed and evidence-based care for their patients. Utilizing a case-based format, this conference will enhance the knowledge, skills and competence of health-care professionals in assessing and treating individual patients’ global cardiovascular risk and incorporating this knowledge into their medical practice.

Needs StatementAccording to the American Heart Association (AHA) someone in America dies of an illness related to cardiovascular disease every 36 seconds. Heart disease and stroke are the most common cardiovascular diseases in the United States. They are the leading causes of death for women and men, killing 1.4 million Americans each year. As the overall care of the patient with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (CVD) becomes more complex, it is imperative that health-care professionals develop a comprehensive approach to the diagnosis, treatment and management of heart disease.

Guidelines now emphasize the importance of estimating global Coronary Heart Disease risk (CHD). Recent guidelines have suggested providing all adults older than 40 years with their global CHD risk. Cardiovascular risk assessment in cardiovascular disease is a constantly evolving field and staying current with the new, important developments is challenging for health-care professionals. This Symposium will close the knowledge gaps between national guidelines, practice and research by providing the attendee with comprehensive, up-to-date and evidence-based information in the diagnosis, treatment and management of cardiovascular disease.
