    For pupils using school transport

+arents should note that the )inal decision on whether it is sa)e to operate rests

with the driver o) the school transport vehicle. here)ore there may be occasionson which a school is open but some routes, or parts o) routes, are unable tooperate.

+arents should advise their children on how long they should wait at the pick up

point )or their transport. his will depend on the prevailing weather conditions andthe availability o) shelter at the pick#up point. -uring adverse weather conditionsno pupil is expected to wait longer than twenty minutes past the normal pick#uptime.

'orning 0ourneys may be delayed by an hour i) road conditions are unsa)e at the

normal 0ourney time but have improved within the hour. 1e)ore pupils return to apick up point parents should check the schools telephone in)ormation line )orupdated messages )rom their schools Head teacher. +lease note that )or someroutes the transport operator may contact the parent directly.

-rivers are advised not to drop o)) children where there is a risk that they may not

sa)ely reach home or other place o) shelter. his may involve children being takento an alternative place o) sa)ety, agreed in consultation with the school.

2here parents are concerned about weather conditions at drop#o)) points, they

should contact the school as early as possible.

When weather conditions are poor, parents should ensure that children are metat the drop-off point, especially where public service transport is used.

It is the responsibility o) parents or carers to decide i) a pupil should attempt to travel

to school, by transport or on )oot, in adverse weather conditions. he 3ducation4uthority encourages )ull attendance at school but in severe weather conditions thesa)ety o) pupils is much more important. +arents and pupils are o)ten concerned thatimportant examinations may be missed, but this should not over#ride good

0udgement. Schools normally make alternative arrangements )or missedexaminations.
