An easy to sew boxy zipper pouch which is customized with embroidery. It is a large, roomy pouch,

making it ideal for a toiletry bag. It is also great for a medical kit bag or even a sewing bag. I used faux

suede for the outer fabric and a nylon lining fabric for the inner part of the pouch.

The finished size of the bag is 11” x 6” x 4”. For this project I used the travel stamps designs. I over-

laid some of the designs to give it that “passport book” look.

Materials:

2 pieces of outer fabric and lining. Each piece needs to be 16” long by 10” wide.

1 piece of outer fabric 4” long by 10” wide. This is for the handle

1 18” nylon zipper

Start by printing off the designs so you can place them onto the outer fabric. Mark where each design

goes as well as the center point of each design. You will use these marking for hooping and stitching

out the embroidery designs onto your purse. I marked a 1” space from the 14” side of the fabric. This

is part of the fabric that will be sewn onto the zipper. I placed my designs beneath this line.

Stitch out the designs. Use the marking lines that you made for each design to position your fabric in

your hoop so you can stitch out the designs. Remove any extra stabilizer. Now that your designs are

stitched onto the fabric you are ready to sew your bag.

If you are unsure on how placement is done, please have a look at my general instructions on place-

ment.

Place the zipper right sides together with one piece of the out fabric, centering it on a long edge and

aligning the edge of the zipper with the raw edge of the fabric. Place the lining right sides together

with the outer fabric, so that you create a zipper sandwich. Using a zipper foot, sew the out fabric,

zipper and lining together.

Fold the fabric and lining wrong sides together and press. Make another zipper sandwich of the other

side of the zipper with the remaining fabric, making sure the outer fabrics is right sides together with

the first piece of outer fabric. Press the side as well after stitching, the topstitch the fabrics close to

the zipper teeth.

Fold the pouch so that the outer fabrics are right sides together and the lining fabrics are right sides

together. Align the edges opposite the zipper. Stitch across the outer fabric straight across, then stitch

the lining fabric as well, but leave a hole in the middle for turning later.

Fold the pouch so that the seams align right on top of the zipper on either side. Use pins to keep the

ling fabric out of the way, then sew each corner of the outer fabric to as close to the zipper as you

can get. Make sure to backstitch at the outer edge of each corner. Repeat this process with the 4 cor-

ners of the lining fabric, holding the outer fabric out of the way. Take your time when doing this and

be sure not to stitch the lining fabric to the outer fabric.

Once all 4 corners are sewn, push the zipper to the inside of the pouch, sew across the zipper area

where you left a gap. Sew through all laters - outer fabric, zipper and lining and then backstitch

across. NOTE: The zipper must be to the inside of the pouch otherwise you won’w be able to open

or close the pouch.

Now to make the handle. Take the handle piece, fold wrong sides together, matching long edges and

press to crease. Open and press each long raw edge 1/2 inch to the wrong side. Fold the handle

closed, then sew several lengthwise lines of topstitching to close and reinforce the handle.

Mark off a 1 1/2 inch square from the seamline of each corner of the pouch as shown in the photo.

Cut the corners out.

Pinch the corners so the seam aligns with the fold, then sew across each corner. Repeat this step for

all the lining corners.

On the zipper pull end of the bag, insert the handle through one outer corner. Box the corner, then

pull the handle through the opposite corner on the short side. Box this corner as well. Box the last

two outer corners.

Finally, turn the pouch right side through the hole in the lining. Turn the raw edges of the lining in

and sew closed with by machine or by hand. Turn pouch right side though the zipper and you are

done!
