Community Projects

Bears for Africa Our 23 bears are now with the Bears for Africa distributor, who told Ann that a total of 900 bears, collected from all over the UK, will be heading off for children recovering from illnesses.

The distributor has sent a kind thank you letter for our contributions. The letter is in our folder together with other bits of information showing the history of the community projects we have done.

of two sewing machines, materials and tools to enable us to expand on our activities. As part of this submission we can make starter hobby kits/packs for residents in local care homes: a new community project for us!

The Community Development Foundation should be making their decision in the next week as to whether or not our application has been successful .

Museum Exhibition Quite a few of us went along to the opening night of the exhibition at the New Walk Museum. The exhibition, showing until 30 September, commemorates 40 years since Ugandan Asians settled in Leicester having been expelled from Uganda.

Our contributions to the exhibition, together with craft work of other Leicester groups, were displayed beautifully by the artists leading this project, and lends credit to both them and our group. To the artists; credit for co-ordinating the groups and melding such a large and diverse number of pieces of craft work into an exhibition to the proud of. To our group; credit for completing lovely work in less than 6 weeks - and that whilst taking some time off to learn the rudiments of batik.

Group Projects

Pink Elephant The pink elephant is slowly taking shape. You may have noticed all the pink fluff floating around a few weeks ago as Beryl and Gail cut the pattern out. The aim is to have it completed in December, when it will be raffled in time for the Christmas season.

Premature baby outfits Ann is still receiving outfits for the LRI premature baby unit. The collection of covers, tops, vests, bonnets and bootees is amazing, and includes additional contributions from friends of our members; some coming as far away as Penny in Devon.

Trading Table Info Since the last newsletter, our group has been to four different events with a trading table. The tables were at the Riverside Festival; St Peter’s sports theme; Braunstone Carnival and the Manor House Community Centre. On every occasion the weather was none too good; with everyone running for cover when the downpours came. However despite the rain, as far as sales go, two tables were fairly successful, with quite a few different types of goods being sold. These include:

• Key rings with a cross stitched initial; seven being sold on one occasion;

• A number of lovely children's jumpers and cardigans knitted by our ’Ninja knitters’;

• Baby bootees • Knitted fruit design tea cosies - a sign the tea cosy is back in fashion?

• A beautiful crocheted white shawl • Knitted miniature teddy bears (picture below)

• Fabric corsages Currently there are no trading tables organised for the near future, although upcoming events are more than likely once the summer holiday season ends. If any should hear of an event taking place where you think our table could be included, please let Beryl know.

Future Newsletter Articles What would you like to see - or perhaps not see - in future newsletters? All your ideas, thoughts and suggestions will be gratefully received by Rita and Gail. Your contributions could be on crafts or any other topic.

If you are wondering what to make for our tables; Halloween, Christmas - - and Easter are just around the corner. There are lots of pine cones available if you would like to try your hand at making decorations for the festive season. Please see Gail for the cones. There are also lots of sequins and ribbons in the stock cupboard that can be used to bring yuletide cheer to the cones.
