    Good Iniciative

The July-September issue of Sewa Sagar is highly educating and motivating. The whole issue was worth

reading and preserving. The experiment of covering sewa activities with national perspective is commendable.

The work being done by Jalbharati of Karnataka is worth emulating. The report of Kerala Sewa Sangam was

also refreshing. The work being done by Haryana unit of Saksham really opens the eyes of all. Equally, the

work done by the Sevavrati parents of Vigyan Bharati's Shri Jayant Sahasrabudhe really deserves salutation.

The whole issue is motivating. My best wishes to make it better.

The general image of Goa in the minds ofcommon men is that it is a state having bigchurches and charming beaches. Very few people

know that there are big temples also there. It is

in this background that the information aboutsewa activities of Keshav Sewa Sadhana will be

refreshing and inspiring for our readers. Keshav

Sewa Sadhana is the representative body of

    Rashtriya Sewa Bharati in Goa.

The information about a project being run by

Jaipur unit of Sewa Bharati for the uplift of street

children has also been accommodated in this issue. It

is a torch bearer project for the organisations working

    in big cities.

    Dr Pratibhatai Athavale of Karnawati

(Ahmedabad) has set a precedent worth emulating

by running several projects exclusively for dental care

for the people of remote areas in North-Eastern states.

Despite facing so many hardships at every step she

displayed extraordinary courage to provide dental care

to the people in the neglected region. It is an inspiration

    for other medicos also.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is very

common word discussed at every place today. The

central government also seems serious for it. In this

context the speech delivered by Azim Premji of Wipro

at an award function organised by The Economic

Times in December last year seems to be practical,

educating and motivating for all the people engagedin sewa activities and also the top people of the

corporate houses. That speech has also been covered

    in this issue.

Landslide and floods are common during the

rainy season. Naturally, such incidents sometimes

cause havoc. The landslide incident at Malin village

under Pune district of Maharashtra was a similar

painful incident which claimed the lives of 62 people

and wiped out an entire village from the map. The relief

work carried out by RSS workers there was applaudedby one and all. A report has been carried on that also.

There is also a report on the relief work carried out

by Sewa Bharati and the Sangh swayamsevaks during

the recent floods of Jammu & Kashmir.

Special thanks to Sanjay Amrite, Prakash

    Sahasrabuddhe, Dipali Vajhe, Bhushan Bavadekar,

Vivek Dhamankar and Jaya Sharma for their valuable

    contribution in translation .

Diligence is the mother of good luck.

December 19, 1961 marked the liberation of Goa

from Portuguese rule and also the beginning ofRSS work in the state. As the Sangh work expanded

with tireless efforts of the RSS cadre, the social

problems also started attracting the workers. The

voluntary work that started in moderate measure

initially soon expanded with active participation of

the society in various fields like hostels, health carecentres, blood donors directory, mobile clinics,

disaster relief work and rehabilitation and so on.

diverse activities the Keshav Sewa Sadhana (KSS)

was founded as an umbrella organisation under the

guidance of Shri Laxman Vaman, popularly known

as Nana Behre. The KSS soon emerged as a fountain

head of voluntary work in Goa.

Under Portuguese rule, certain Hindu majority

areas like Kankon, Sange, Sattari, Pedne weredeliberately kept backward without any educational

facilities. Students from these taluks faced difficulties

and had to go to other areas for education and rent out

small rooms. The fate of students from remote places

was even worst. The late Manjunathdas Kamat and the

late Narayan Gaonkar of Kankon visited Sree Arvind

Ashram at Pondicherry along with some teachers.

The student hostel facility at that Ashram made deep

impression on them on the backdrop of the deprivation

at hand. Upon their return from Pondicherry the idea

was vigorously persued and thus the student hostel,

Mataji Mandir Vidyarthi Vastigriha (MMVV) was

born with an initial batch of 25 students.

Heenam Dushayati iti Hindu is one of the

definitions of a Hindu, meaning Hindu is one who

overcomes darkness and ignorance. Creation of

positivity naturally dispels negativity like action

of lighting a lamp removes darkness. The MMVV

hostel activity expanded under Keshav Sewa Sadhana.

The rented premises were proving insufficient.

Dedication of volunteers, positive social perception

and Government assistance saw the MMVV hostel

facility transformed to a new well equipped owned

facility at Tembewadi. The community development

department provided a bus for the hostel that currently

has 94 students on the roll. The MMVV has produced

several exemplary students and won awards for

Malkhamb at national level. Shrikant Gaonkar, an

ex student of the MMVV, is currently functioning asmanager at the hostel. Another student at the hostel

Shri Divakar Velip became a gold medalist doctor at

Goa Ayurveda College and volunteered for two years

at a health project conducted by the MMVV.

MMVV was growing with sole objective of

service to the society, and needs for similar facilities

were felt at other places also. At this juncture Shri

Vidyadhar Pednekar donated his old house at Paigeen

for the hostel. The monthly contribution by way of

foodgrains and funds started flowing from the Paigeen

village. Women from Sree Ramkrishna Vivekananda

Seva Samiti at Phonda commenced collecting daily

fistful of grains for the hostel students under their

Amritsurbhi scheme. With such generous support

and growing need for hostel activities, soon the idea

to have own facility got momentum. Luckily land

was made available with active support from Smt

Manik Parbhu Gaonkar and Smt Milan Prabhu Desai.

Thus was born KSS facility named Sree ParashuramVidyarthi Vastigriha (SPVV). Currently 54 students

    avail the hostel facilities.

Kankon suffered worst ever calamity on October

A superior man is modest in his speech, but exceeds in his actions.

that submerged over half of the region. The floods

rendered a large section of residents homeles. The

notable work done by SPVV in the time of such

calamity brought a lot of warmth and succor to the

needy section of the society. SPVV coordinated and

directed the entire relief activity virtually converting

itself as KSS headquarters. As a long term measure

four houses were built to rehabilitate the affected

    people.

In a meeting held at Dicholi, a surprising aspect

was noticed. Dicholi and surrounding areas have

higher level of mentally challenged children. There

was no schooling facility for those special children.

The nearest special schooling available was at Sanjay

School at Parvari or Lokvishwas Foundation School

at Phonda. These facilities were out of reach for the

local students due to distance, inconvenience and

expenses involved. Socially sensitive workers rose

to the occasion with positive approach. A primary

survey revealed that there were over 300 specialchildren in the region.

Mental retardation is a long lasting condition

and not a disease. The subject can show marked

improvement with help from parents, teachers and

society to achieve confidence and a reasonable level

of independence. Special schools do have a special

role in alleviating the mental conditions along with

appropriate medicines for physical and mental well-

being. Specially trained teachers with compassion andcommitments can certainly work miracles in the field

    of special education.

    An organising committee was constituted

under the guidance of Dr Guruprasad Kapadi, a

prominent dentist from Dicholi and a fund raising

drive commenced. The school was established on

the auspicious day of Vijayadashami of 2004 with

strength of 11 students at a place lovingly offered by a

well-wisher worker Shri Sadguru Shetye. The work ofspecial education is indeed challenging and also needs

a lot of infrastructural support for providing medical

    facilities, implementing educational experiments,

    vocational guidance, self-help opportunities, educating

parents. The work was growing and larger facilities

were needed. The tireless work of the workers,

loving parents and large hearted socially conscious

donors were the main pillars for the mission here.

Shri Jantye Brothers stepped in at this juncture and

graciously donated 2600 sq. meters of land. Enthused

workers started work in full swing. It is noteworthy

that garnering funds is no more challenging as it is

used to be in earlier times, when you have sincere and

committed workers. The help started pouring from all

over. No wonder soon KSS run special school was

    running with well equipped facility.

Every special child has some strength. It is

the trained teachers acumen to identify the sameand make most of these so that the subject becomes

more confident and is able to keep personal hygiene,

do small chores, walk on the road safely, visit local

shops, play simple games, make some articles and

participate in social gatherings. Special children are

taught games, physical exercises and pranayam to

improve physical and mental capacities. Parents

role in special childs development is very critical.

KSS Special School therefore conducts workshops

for parents at the beginning of the academic year

where they are fully oriented to the curriculum and

methodology of the school. Regular workshops

and training sessions are held between teachers and

    parents for more participative contribution.

The KSS Special School has 141 students on

roll for current academic year and is led by Principal

Smt Ketaki Khanolkar with a dedicated team of

38 employees. The school is progressing well and

has several achievements to its credit. The school

participated in the Athens Summer Olympics for

Special Children. A student of the school, Kumari

Vibha Kanekar secured first rank at national level

for prestigious Balashree Puraskar 2011. The

school is expected to achieve further excellence with

highly proactive executive committee. Last year yet

another special school was started at Valpaie. Shri

Guruji had observed that at the heart of our concept

of a great nation lies the ability to perceive divinity

in the common man. We are indeed inspired by this

vision of seeking the divine in everyone around us

    as our mission.

Sange taluk in Goa is not very accessible. Verle,

Saljani, Tudav villages do not have even primary

schools. KSS workers therefore decided to start

a hostel at Netravali. On the historical coronation

anniversary day of Shri Shivaji Maharaj on June 3,

2001 the hostel was started in the name of Durgamata

Vidyarthi Vastigriha (DVV). An unused building

was made available by Government for the hostel.

Soon help started flowing from workers, well-wishers

and parents by way of foodgrains, vegetables, funds,

utility articles, etc. from surrounding areas of Rivan,

Kepe, Sawarde. Currently, there are 34 students on

    roll at DVV.

The Konkan region is endowed with higherrainfall but the topography drains out all the rain water

into the Arabian Sea causing severe water shortage

in summer in certain areas. Bonyewada at Savaivere

area of Phonda taluk is one such pocket. Survey

of the area indicated some highly silted and hence

completely dormant water body traces. KSS arranged

a Shram Sanskar camp in May. The mornings in the

camp was for excavating the identified area followed

by survey of the area. The evenings were for lectures

on some relevant topics for the community. Thevillagers were actively involved in the work and a 275

sq. feet, 6 feet deep lake was created at the end of the

camp to address summer water shortage.

KSS activities are growing and covering more

and newer social areas. A well stocked library named

Shri Mallikarjun Vachanalaya has been established

at Shristal. An ambulance made available at Mapuca

through Medha Parrikar Runga Seva Kendra is

catering to needy at nominal charges. Gram ArogyaRakshak Yojana was successfully launched at Sattari

taluk given the inadequacy of the medical facilities

there. A trained first aid worker is serving the taluk.

Similarly, KSS started a Health centre named Leelatai

C Gokhale at Paigeen and serving primary health

requirements of the area. KSS also runs several

activities like mobile clinics, surgical and medical

equipment centres, first aid kits, shram-sanskar

camps, blood donation camps, free medical checkup

camps, blood donors directories, libraries, primary

    schools, Bal Sanskar Kendras, etc.

Keshav Sewa Sadhana has also responded

to the calamities and supported the society in

    Marathwada earthquake, Andhra cyclon, Kargil

war, Gujarat earthquake, Madgaon new market fire,

Dicholi and Kankon floods. KSS collected relief

funds and coordinated projects to provide relief and

rehabilitation to the affected people. At Nagarpalvillage in Gujarat after the earthquake, KSS built 8

    rooms for the girl school.

Trees do not eat their own fruits but offer

them to the people. It is indeed the society that

teaches a person, provides opportunities to grow and

provides resources for life. The Sadhana at Keshav

Sewa Sadhana is to create such people who would

give it back to the society with commitment and

    dedication.

Many sewa activities are carried out by VivekanandaKendra, Sewa Bharati and various other like-mindedorganisations in the mountainous and remote areas of

North Eastern states of the country. The general public

also contributes in various educational and health activities

in those areas. Dr Pratibha Athavale of Ahmedabad is a

doctor who has dedicated herself to the health needs of

the people in several parts of north-east. She is a dental

surgeon and has been offering free services to the people

in remote areas of north-east through her three weeks' stay

    on Diwali every year.

Travelling and trekking have been Dr Pratibhas

passion since childhood. Once during her trip to

Kailash Mansarovar in 1995, she came across many

locals suffering from severe headache, cough, cold and

stomach-ache problems. She treated them happily but

at that time she noticed their poor oral hygiene. The

urge of providing them free medical aid encouraged

her to return to these areas at least once a year. Her

fathers words You can serve your nation through

your own profession further energised her to undertake

    the task.

In collaboration with Shri Satish Chaukulkar, a

dedicated worker of Vivekananda Kendra, she started

work on the mission of providing free dental care inrural areas of North East in the year 2000. Every year

she travels nearly 60 hours by rail from Ahmedabad

to Delhi, Delhi to Guwahati and then by jeep to the

designated camps just to serve the people.

She prefers travelling to the remotest areas, where

the locals are deprived of even the basic health and

hygiene especially in the field of dental. She conducts

3 to 4 camps of four days duration and tries her level

best to treat all the people coming with dental problems.

Her tasks include minor fillings, root canal, uprooting

    of teeth, etc.

Her work requires a special dental chair and

compressor. In the beginning she herself took upon the

responsibility of carrying the instruments with her to

amount to open up four dental clinics in rural areas of

north east. With the donations Sawa Bharati took up the

initiative to start five clinics. Dr Pratibha herself arranged

light weight dental units and equipments driven by

hydraulic power to the rural areas. But the problem wasthat they were useless due to frequent power failures in

the region. The light weight dental unit and equipments

were packed in 35 boxes and were transported to

Guwahati and other designated areas by road.

Dr Pratibhas dedication is worth admiring as she

herself learnt all the electrical and technical aspects of

her instruments and re-assembled them successfully

at her clinics. The interiors of all her clinic too were

done under her guidance and personal attention. Hence,

five dental clinics were successfully opened in Tejpur

    (Assam), Gosaigaon (Kokrajhar district), Dittkachara

(South Assam), Imphal (Manipur) and Meghalaya.

    Consistently and selflessly with complete

dedication Dr Pratibha Athavale has been serving the

locals in rural areas of North East whole heartedly.

She has travelled widely to the most remote areas of

Arunachal Pradesh like Amliang camp in Lohit district, which is very close to Indo-China border and offered

free services to the locals as well as the Indian soldiers

deployed there. She also travelled to Garo hills, Belbery

village, which is 15 kms from Bangladesh border.

Vidya Bharati runs a school there, which does

not get any grant from the government; also there is no

provision for electricity or any generator. The parents

of the children residing in the hostel cum school were

unable to afford even Rs 400 as monthly fees for food,

education and stay. In the hilly areas of Teling village

in Nagaland, people have to travel nearly five hours to

get medical aid in Dimapur. In case of emergency, they

have to spend Rs 10,000 on journey alone. Dr Pratibha

travelled to such remote areas and offered services to

    the people.

Had she not travelled to the most remote areas

of North East, the people would have been deprived of

good oral hygiene along with several other diseases. It

has proved to be a boon to many. Her selfless devotiontowards her work and strong willpower is highly

    admirable.

educating and uplifting the children working as rag

children to the school. But the parents displayed

reluctance. They said the kids collected plastic,

Three things cannot be long hidden the Sun, the Moon, and the Truth.

insistence, some of them started sending the kids.

As a result, Smt Kumavat started the school at her

home only with 5 kids on January 26, 2003.

Initially, when the kids came they were dirty

and in highly bad shape, as if they did not take a

bath for days. Their nails and hairs were untrimmed

and noses running. Smt Kumavat first trained them

about hygiene. Today it is hard to make a distinction

between these kids and other school going kids.

Gradually, the number of kids coming to

school increased. But it was hard for them to

concentrate on the studies. Some of them were used

to hunting the pigeons and sell to the local people.

This fetched them money which not only supported

their families but also helped them sparing some for

tobacco or other addictions. Smt Kumavat slowly

persuaded the kids not to take on bird hunting and

concentrate on their studies. Some of them agreed

while the others felt it was encroachment in their

freedom. So they fled the school. Smt Kumavat felt

that it was getting beyond her to keep the kids in

her control and have them concentrate on studies.

    She started feeling little disheartened.

One day, a miracle happened. She was

engrossed in teaching the kids and the same saintly

person who initially inspired her to take up the

mission, appeared once again. He was so amused,

did not disturb her and kept on watching the whole

class proceedings. Smt Kumavat for long did not

even notice the presence of the man. When she

turned around and noticed him, he immediately

went further and touched her feet. She was startled

and expressed regrets he being older and senior toher. But the man explained that he is not offering

reverence to Smt Vimla but to a divine soul

within her who has taken up such a nobel cause

so sincerely and carrying out her motherly duties.

That same very moment Smt Kumavat resolved in

her mind that she would never give up the mission

she has embarked. Over the period of time, she has

developed disability in her eyes due to haemorrhage.

Doctors even advised her not to speak or teach. But

all these impediments have not come in her way orher mission. She is still carrying on with the noble

    work every day.

In the beginning there were very few girl

to carry the household works after their parents

went to work, so their presence and time was very

limited. However, on annual function the residents

amazingly well. Girls had learnt by heart the

shifted to a full-fledged centre of its own consisting

A very similar school has now commenced

at Baxawala in Sangener, Jaipur. Initially, the kids

from here were taken to Mahesh Nagar School

daily by two cars, which is about 25 km. As the

number of school going children grew, a school

was started here itself. Currently, there are about

155 students in this school. After 8th standard, these

kids are sent to various government and public

In addition to this, an attempt is made to build

A man is but the product of his thoughtswhat he thinks, he becomes.

Malin, the small village about 80 km from Puneunder Ambegaon taluk situated near famousshrine of Bhimshankar, is gradually recovering

from the tragedy which claimed 62 lives during the

landslide on July 30. Since majority of the adultpopulation live in Pune in search of livelihood,

mainly women, children and old people were in the

village on that fateful night. The entire village buried

under the mud. Out of the total 495 people living in

47 houses, 30 houses were buried. Many people are

    still missing.

The NDRF personnel and RSS workers

persistently joined the rescue work and successfully

took out 14 people alive. It is to be noted that atabout 3 am, a part of the hill collapsed and 61

children, 60 women and 37 men buried inside the

mud. Since most of the houses in the village were

made of mud, the villagers didnt get the chance to

get out and save themselves. The village was buried

under thousands of tonnes of mud. The casualty was

huge because the people were caught sleeping. As

soon as the swayamsevakas got the news at about 11

am, they wasted no time to proceed for the rescue.

Apart from the swayamsevaks about 350 personnel

of NDRF, 2 unmanned automatic vehicles joined

    the rescue work.

Five swayamsevakas left for the site with an

ambulance. There were four check-posts where the

people of other organisations, tourists and even the

medical personnel were stopped. However, after

spotting the swayamsevakas fully prepared with

ambulance and maps, dressed in full uniforms, the

administration allowed them to enter the place of

tragedy. Not only this, the administration droppedZilla Pracharak Shri Laxman Sura, who reached a

little late, at the place of the tragedy in their own

workers into four groups--Medical Aid Centre,

Coordination at the place of the debris, postmortem

assistance and coordination with the victims

families. This daunting task was well performed by a

swayamsevak Rishabh Mutha. In this way, a team of

10 swayamsevaks was deputed for each group. This

elevated the morale of other rescue groups. They

educated the rescue teams of the vital information

about the village, like how much deep the villagewas buried. For that, information was obtained from

the villagers regarding the height of the crown of

the temple. On that basis, a swayamsevak, Santosh

Sasawade, could tell the rescue officer that the debris

is about 30 feet deep. On further questioning the

rescue officer was told that the height of the crown

of the temple was 30 feet and it is completely buried

under the debris. Hence the minimum depth of the

    debris should be 30 feet.

In the wake of continuous rains and terrifying

atmosphere of dead bodies, it was absolutely

necessary to motivate the rescue workers. It was

quite difficult as to how to remove the very thick

and deep debris. Apart from it the parts of the dead

bodies were scattered everywhere. Hands, legs and

heads of some bodies were separated from the torso

and the dead bodies were in such a condition that

the part which was tried to pull out would separate

    from the body.

This terrifying situation scared the rescue

workers from touching the bodies. On the other hand,

due to huge volume of the debris, some lives could

not be saved despite the strong desire to do so.

When the debris removal work was on with the

help of a Poclain machine, the head separated from a

dead body. Watching this, driver of the machine fell

unconscious. At that time two swayamsevaks, Ashok

Borate and Balasaheb Lohokare, motivated people

to continue the work. A college student, Kanta

Prasad, who had joined the rescue operation for the

first time did not stop the work till the postmortem

of all the bodies was performed. When the numberof dead bodies poured in two swayamsevaks,

Aniruddha Yadav and Shashi Yadav, wrapped the

dead bodies in clothes. Then after identifying each

body and obtaining permission from the relatives, it

was decided to perform the last rites of the bodies.

The dead bodies in that condition could not be kept

out for long. Because of the shortage of space, the

funeral of 16 bodies was performed together.

If you tell the truth, you dont have toremember anything.

Good evening. Its pleasure to be here with allof you.I want to thank The Economic Times for

    bestowing this honour on me.

While I receive this, the simple fact is that it isactually an honour for thousands of my colleagues

and partners, who have helped build Wipro into what

it is, over the past few decades. Thank you.

It was suggested by Economic Times that

I share some thoughts on Philanthropy on this

occasion. So let me do so.

Lets think about tonight. We will all go home

or go to our hotels and sleep. No matter where

we are, within a couple of kilometers of where

we will be sleeping safely and soundly, there willbe a young girl, who is our daughters age or our

granddaughters age, trying to sleep in the cold night

    of December on the roads.

She has been abused in the past, and she will

be abused in the future. She is probably desperately

hungry. In these circumstances, going to school or

having anything else that every child must have is

not even a remote possibility. When she wakes up

tomorrow morning, its just the start to another day

of trying to survive, to again sleep shivering on thecold pavement somewhere.

This girl is not alone. There are probably 3

million children, who are homeless and will sleep

on the streets in India tonight and every night. She

is also not alone in sleeping hungry. More than 200

million of our people will probably sleep hungry,

    like her.

In very simple terms: can we be indifferent

    to this?

To my mind that is the basic question that we

need to ask ourselves, do we feel connected to our

country or to the people around us? Should not every

Indian have the very basic, very bare necessities of

Be the change that you want to see in the world.

a life of dignity? This is certainly not hoping for too

much, its just basic safety, adequate food, a roof on

head to sleep, basic education and healthcare.

Most of us would feel this way. I think we

    just need to act.

I have mentioned only a few kinds of issues. But as all of us know, our country is facing

challenges of similar kind on every front. Be it

education, healthcare, nutrition, sanitation or of

deep inequality and discrimination. Each one is as

complex as the other, and each one as necessary for

    a life basic dignity.

We can perhaps justifiably say that many of

these issues need to be addressed by the government.

Certainly the government needs to do more and

better. But that doesnt in any way lessen theresponsibility that we have. You and I, who have

the privilege of being successful, have a greater

    responsibility.

To me philanthropy is the connection that we

can have if we are not indifferent to all these issues

that face us. It is the mechanism for us to contribute

to making some positive changes. And I think

greater our success, the greater the responsibility

    for us.

I must also say that the desire to engage

must come from within. No one can be told to be

philanthropic. At its core Philanthropy is about the

connection that you feel with the people around

you or the world around you. Many, who feel this

connection and have taken action, have experienced

that there is enough reason for hope in our country,

and that one can genuinely contribute.

The Foundation that we have set up has been

working with various state governments to improve

equity and quality of government schools for the

past 12 years. I have learnt that trying to improve

education is a very long process, but I think basic

education is the basic route to building a better

society, so we remain totally committed to it. Let

me narrate one of many things that give us hope in

    this journey.

We work in some of the most disadvantaged

districts of the country. We have 50-70 of our own

people in each of these districts. They are all deeply

committed to the cause of education, and are capableof education teachers.

In all these places we run voluntary learning

forums for government school teachers, amongst

many other initiatives. What this means is that

teachers come to these learning sessions on their own.

They spend their own money for transportation; they

come from up to 30 km away in difficult conditions.

They also spend their own money on food. They do

this on a holiday, usually on Sunday.

Can we imagine this happening in the best

of the companies? How many employees of such

companies will spend their holidays and their own

money, so that they can do their jobs better? How

completely contrary is this experience of ours, to the

Involving your family early in Philanthropy is very important. Their

understanding, endorsement and involvement may eventually be the

most determining factor. There is another positive aspect to this early

involvement. Some of the smartest people that I know have been thosewho chose to become home makers. They can perhaps play a significant

role in starting off their families philanthropic efforts.

notion of the disinterested government employee?

These are all government employees, but they are

deeply committed and they genuinely care.

Our experience has been that between 12-18%

teachers in a district become a part of such forums

over a period of time. And if you ask them why

they do it, they all have the same answer, which is

that they want to learn so that they can teach better.

We are not talking about small numbers in a typical

district with 5000 teachers this implies that 600-800

teachers are engaged in such forums.

I find this a great reason for hope. When somany people from within the government school

system have this kind of commitment, I am sure

education will improve, given time and sustained

effort. As I said before we have been at it for 12 years.

I have only one regret about my Philanthropy, which

is that, I wish it had started earlier. There is so much

to do, and this kind of work takes so much time that

the earlier we try to contribute, the better it is.

With these 12 years of our experience, let

me share three other things that I have learnt about

Philanthropy. Those of you, who are very active in

philanthropy, would perhaps resonate with these

    lessons that I have learnt.

First, involving your family early in

Philanthropy is very important. Their understanding,

    endorsement and involvement may eventually

be the most determining factor. There is another

positive aspect to this early involvement. Some of

the smartest people that I know have been those who

chose to become home makers. They can perhapsplay a significant role in starting off their families

    philanthropic efforts.

Second, the key to scaling up Philanthropy

and doing good work is getting people in the team.

This is exactly the same, as in our businesses. The

work in Philanthropy is perhaps more complex than

business, because social issues are more complex.

So, it needs really good people. I think that the

most serious start to anyones philanthropic work

would be to pick one of their top people from

within the business, a person who has the interest,

empathy, ability and trust and move him or her to

    the Philanthropy side.

    Third, philanthropic work needs patience,

tenacity and empathy. It is different from business.

We all know that intellectually, but its very

challenging when one gets into it. One has to change

ones mindset significantly, if one has to make a

difference. I have learnt this only slowly in the past12 years.

Thank you for hearing me out. I absolutely

believe that we are trustees of our wealth for this

society, and we must use it as such. We must do

Philanthropy because it is the right thing to do.

I also believe that every one of us has the basic

empathy with the people around us; we just need to

let it find expression. I am certain that none of us

wants to let the young girl, I talked about earlier,

to go hungry, to get abused, or to sleep in the cold

night of December on the road, when our daughters

and grand-daughters are sleeping safe and sound - as

    they should. Thank you.

generated the feeling among the minds of even

those who were misguided that they must begrateful to the army. They admit had the armywas not there, their survival was impossible. Atthe same time the people also witnessed that nonefrom the anti-national groups was seen anywhereduring the entire relief operation.

Soon after the getting the reports of calamity,Prime Minister Narendra Modi missed no timeto take a lead in visiting the affected areas andprovided quick relief of Rs 100 to the victims.Apart from the central government, the peopleof the country as well as various voluntaryorganisations dispatched relief material to the statein huge quantity. By and large the entire nationwas seen standing with the people of Jammu &Kashmir, which further strengthened the feelingof oneness and integration.

Since the floods did not strike all of a sudden, the loss of lives was less in Kashmir Valley. But the houses, both in rural and urban areas, submerged completely. The fields also witnessed

huge loss as the crops were ruined and the land atcertain places become useless for farming becauseof huge silt left by the water. There is one moreinteresting fact. The people of Kashmir valleyincluding the Muslims, rear indigenous cow onlarge scale. They mostly drink cow milk and she

buffalo is rarely found there. But the calamityclaimed the lives of thousands of cows. It is amajor loss to the people of the state.

Relief and rescue work by Sewa Bharati

Sewa Bharati has been running around 250sewa projects in Kashmir valley for about 10 years. They include Ekal Vidyalayas, self-help groups,Sanskar Kendras, cutting tailoring centres, etc.Interestingly, those who are served and those whoserve are Muslims. There are about 350 Muslimworkers, including 25 Muslims, who are associated

with the Sewa Bharati. They undoubtedly sufferedloss in the floods, but instead of looking aftertheir own families alone they rescued the othervictims also. They rescued over 3000 victims fromdeep water and shifted them to safer places. Theyalso provided meals, clothes and other essentialcommodities to the victims.

Since the drinking water even in rural areas had1.

contaminated, the people were provided with

chlorine tablets and liquid bottles of chlorine.

About 8000 tablets of chlorine and 300 liters ofliquid chlorine were distributed.

Since all the houses were submerged and walls2.

were wet, the people were provided with phenyl

to curb the spread of diseases. Insecticides were

sprayed in about 85 villages and bleaching

--For medical need, two doctors from4.

    Bhavnagar, Gujarat, reached there on

September 14. Then various groups of doctors

started visiting the affected areas. Now the

doctors are visiting even the remote areas.

associated with Sewa Bharati had treated 5343

patients in five districts of the state. Presently,

15 doctors are working. Apart from it, about50 doctors from different parts of the country

are going to visit the between October 3 and

    10. Apart from providing medicines, they are

also counseling the victims so that they can

recover fast. The doctors who went there so

far have inspiring experience. Almost all had

the same experience. They said people of the

state are very happy and they extended high

reverence to them. The arrangements of food

and stay were made at the houses of Muslims

only and both the families and the doctors

    shared a bond of oneness.

The electric supply was adversely affected5.

due to the floods. Therefore, the Sewa Bharati

is in the process of supplying about 2000

solar lamps to the affected families. Now with

the activeness of the government machinery,

the electric supply has been restored in someareas.

The schools in the Valley are closed for long6.

time. Majority of the students have lost their

textbooks. Therefore, the Sewa Bharati has

decided to provide textbooks and school kits to

    about 5000 students.

There are also planning to train about 100 local7.

workers in first aid and provide them Medical

kits so that they can treat the minor ailments of

the people on the spot only. The medical kitwill include a digital blood pressure machine,

thermometer and the medial literature so that

they do not feel any difficulty in providing first

aid to the victims. Now survey of the affected

areas is going on and once the survey report

comes the long term rehabilitation plans will

    be formulated.

The state unit of Sewa Bharati has beenassisted by many voluntary organisations and

institutions across the country in this endeavour. The Go Air transported relief material fromDelhi and Mumbai to Srinagar and Jammu free ofcost. All the organisations or institutions, whichcontributed in the relief operation, deserve sincererapplause and it is hoped that their assistance and

Majority of the families lost their almost allhousehold things in the flood.

The loss of human lives is more in Jammuthan in Srinagar region. About 150 people havebeen reported died. An entire bus carrying awedding party washed away in the floods killing85 passengers. The bus had 19 members of a familyand 17 of them washed away. Only two elderscould survivegrandfather and grandmother.Similarly, about 40 people of a village buried

    Muslims of the Valley show

    unique example of oneness

The unity and cooperation displayed by local

Muslims in Kashmir Valley need applause andspecial mention. Since flood waters stored in

majority of the houses, the people whose houses

were safe, kept the victims for many days.

They also looked after all their needs. There

were some relief camps also at some places.

The Muslim youth collected relief material

from houses and distributed to the victims. The

    announcements about precautions, warning or

the information about the people trapped was

aired regularly through loudspeakers. Theworkers acted accordingly and rushed the place

where they were needed the most.

Many roads in Srinagar were closed for

many days. Naturally, the traffic movement

adversely affected. In such a situation, a group

of youth cleared the roads and managed the

traffic. Till September 14, the local police was

missing from the scene. When they appear on

14, they had nothing to do. People were angry at

the police but they displayed high reverence tothe youth. Since the local transport was closed,

the youth picked and dropped people from one

place to other. There was a display of unique

    family bonds.

landslide will be adopted for rehabilitation with thehelp of Mata Amritanandamayi Math. In Jammualone, more than 200 workers joined the reliefoperation. Huge silt had stored in a big temple ofJammu, which is famous among 22 Jyotirlingas.About 100 swayamsevaks of Jammu cleared thatsilt by performing shram sadhana.

    Our expectations

There is a Sultanpur village situated at

the banks of Tavi River. It is about 20 km from

Jammu. The flood water had submerged all the

houses causing huge loss. The Sewa Bharati and

Sangh workers were engaged in relief work there.

When they started returning after finishing the

relief work, an old man who was sitting silently forsome time, came and told them, You have seen

that we have suffered huge loss. But we dont want

anything from the government. We can stand by

our own efforts. We just expect the government

to ensure that such floods do not strike back and if

strike there should be proper security arrangements

    in advance.
