Blocks Construction ( Refer to Diagrams on Page 4. The arrows in the figures denote fabric direction. Pay attention to the fabric and unit orientations while assembling the various components.)

1. Place one 3 7/8” Fabric C square on top of one 3 7/8” Fabric D square, right sides together. Draw a line across the diagonal of the top square (Fig. 1). Sew 1/4” away from each side of the drawn diagonal line (Fig. 1). Cut the two squares apart on the drawn diagonal line (Fig. 2) to make two half-square triangles. Trim the blocks to measure 3 ½” (Fig. 3). Repeat to make ninety-six Unit 1 squares.

2. Sew one 3 ½” Fabric F square to the left side of one Unit 1 square to make the top row. Sew (1) Unit 1 square to the left side of one 3 ½” Fabric E square to make the bottom row. Sew the two rows together lengthwise to make (1) 6 ½” Unit 2 square (Fig. 4). Repeat to make twenty-four Unit 2 squares total.

3. Sew one Unit 1 square to the left side of one 3 ½” Fabric G square to make the top row. Sew (1) 3 ½” Fabric H square to the left side of one Unit 1 square to make the bottom row. Sew the two rows together lengthwise to make (1) 6 ½” Unit 3 square (Fig. 5). Repeat to make twenty-four Unit 3 squares total.

4. Place one 3 ½” Fabric D square on the top left corner of one 6 ½” Fabric B square, right sides together (Fig. 6). Sew across the diagonal of the smaller square from the upper right corner to the lower left corner (Fig. 6). Flip open the triangle formed and press (Fig. 7). Trim away the excess fabric from behind the triangle 1/4" away from the sewn seam.

5. Follow Figure 8 for the seam direction to add one 3 ½” Fabric D square to the upper right corner and 3 ½” Fabric C squares to the lower left and lower right corners of the 6 ½” Fabric B square to make one Unit 4 square (Fig. 9).

6. Repeat Steps 4-5 to make twenty-four Unit 4 squares total. 7. Repeat Steps 4-5 and refer to Figure 10 for fabric identification, placement, seam direction and orientation to make

twenty-four Unit 5 squares. 8. Sew one Unit 2 square, one Unit 4 square and one Unit 3 square together in that order left to right to make the top

row. Repeat to make the bottom row. Sew one Unit 4 square to each side of 6 ½” Fabric A square to make the mid-dle row. Sew the three rows together lengthwise to make one 18 ½” Block One square (Fig. 11). Repeat to make six Block One squares total.

9. Sew one Unit 2 square, one Unit 5 square and one Unit 3 square together in that order left to right to make the top row. Repeat to make the bottom row. Sew one Unit 5 square to each side of 6 ½” Fabric A square to make the mid-dle row. Sew the three rows together lengthwise to make one 18 ½” Block Two square (Fig. 12). Repeat to make six Block Two squares total.

10. Sew one Block One square to each side of one Block Two square to make Row One (Fig. 13). Repeat to make Row Three.

11. Sew one Block Two square to each side of one Block One square to make Row Two (Fig. 13). Repeat to make Row Four.

12. Sew the four rows from Steps 10-11 together lengthwise to make the Center Block (Fig. 13).

Quilt Top Assembly 13. Sew one 2 ½” x 72 ½” Fabric J strip to each side of the Center Block. Sew one 2 ½” x 58 ½” Fabric J strip to the top

and to the bottom of the Center Block. 14. Sew one 5 ½” x 76 ½” Fabric A strip to each side of the Center Block. Sew one 5 ½” x 68 ½” Fabric A strip to the top

and to the bottom of the Center Block.

Finishing 15. Layer the quilt top, batting and backing and quilt as desired. 16. Stitch the binding strips together, end to end using diagonal seams. Fold and press the resulting long strip in half,

lengthwise with wrong sides together. Stitch to the quilt front, matching raw edges and mitering the corners. 17. Fold the binding to the quilt underside and hand-stitch the folded edge to the quilt back.
