Carrie BradshawCarrie writes a weekly column called "Sex and the City" for the fictional newspaper, The New York Star.

The column focuses on Carrie's sexual escapades and those of her close friends, as well as musingsabout the relationships between men and women, dating, and New York . It provides Carrie with a

certain amount of recognition in the city. People who read her column occasionally describe her as

their icon. In the third season, her column is optioned for a film starring a fictionalized Matthew

McConaughey. In the fifth season, some of her columns are compiled into a book. At the end of season

four, Carrie begins to write freelance articles for Vogue. Although she initially has trouble dealing with

Enid (Candice Bergen), her abrasive editor at Vogue, she does find her feet, and ends up befriending

    her.

Carrie is an on-again, off-again smoker. She frequently smokes "Marlboro Lights". She tries to quit in

seasons 3 and 4 using the Nicotine patch when she is dating Aidan.

She enjoys cocktails (particularlyCosmopolitansher character's fondness for them helped to popularize the drink).

She is on an endless search for true love, and refuses to settle for, as she puts it, "anything less than

butterflies." Despite this, she repeatedly expresses doubts that she is the type to get married and raise

    a family.

Carrie is a resident of Manhattan, New York. She lives in a brownstone on the Upper East Side at the

fictional house number of 245, on East 73rd Street, between Park and Madison. She lives in this

apartment throughout the series, and buys it in the fourth season.

Little is mentioned about Carrie's life before the series. At the beginning of the fifth season, Carrie

states that her relationship with the city is "about 18 years," implying she moved to New York when

she was 18 years old which causes many to speculate that she moved to the city to attend college. She

says in the movie she's lived in her apartment for twenty years, meaning she lived in the city five years

before moving in. She is most likely from a middle-class background, as Stanford Blatch mentions that

she wore Candie's and took the subway when she first moved to the city. It is mentioned that her

father left her and her mother when she was five; no siblings are ever mentioned. It is also revealed

that Carrie had one abortion in the 1980s, after a one-night stand, when she was 22 years old.

Though she had been dating for many years before meeting (and nicknaming) Mr.

Big in the firstepisode of the series, he is her first true love, the man she thinks may be her soulmate.

    ... she gets dumped by a Post-it ...

Carrie begins dating fellow writer Jack Berger (Ron Livingston). Things take a

turn for the worse when Carrie's newfound success as an author continues

to grow as Berger's second novel meets a dismal fate. After taking a break

from their relationship, Berger returns to Carrie in the hopes they can work

things out. After spending the night together, Carrie wakes up to find a

    Berger-less bed and a Post-it note left from him, saying, 'I'm sorry, I can't .

    Don't hate me.

    ... she takes up a 'lover' ...

Carrie takes up a 'lover' in Aleksandr Petrovsky (Mikhail

Baryshnikov), a rich, successful Russian artist who sweeps her

off her feet. To the disappointment of her friends, Carrie takes

him up on the offer to leave New York and live with him in

Paris. She is quickly disappointed upon arrival when she

... But in the end her heart belongs to Mr. Big

After the mess with Aleksandr, Mr Big goes to Paris to tell Carrie that she is the only one for him. After Mr. Big (whose real name

is finally revealed to be John James Preston) professes to Carrie that she is 'the one,' the reunited couple returns to New York

together. They remain in a mature, committed relationship for four years before finally agreeing to get married. Big decides he

can't go through with it, leaving a devastated Carrie trying to move on with her life. When they unintentionally meet, Carrie's

anger quickly disappears as she runs back into his arms.

After reaffirming their feelings for each other, Carrie and Big decide to

Samantha JonesSamantha is one of four single friends portrayed in the series . She is the most promiscuous of the

four since most of her storylines revolve around the frequent sex she has . She is outspoken and a

self-proclaimed "try-sexual" (meaning she'll try anything at least once).

Samantha is the eldest of the four friends (in the final scene of Sex and the City: The Movie, her

50th birthday is celebrated), and she has her own public-relations company. Not much is known

about Samantha's younger years, except that she came from more of a working class background,

and she spent most of her teenage years selling Dilly bars at Dairy Queen to earn pocket money .

Season 3 implies that she has at least two siblings, when she mentions that at her age, her mother

"was saddled with three kids and a drunk husband." She later mentions partying at Studio 54

during its heyday, implying she moved sometime in the mid to late-1970s from wherever she grew

    up to New York City.

She has mentioned having had at least two abortions, one of which occurred

    while she was in college.

In the early part of the series, she lives on the Upper East Side, but ends up moving to an expensive

apartment in the Meatpacking District, after one of her late-night visitors lets in a mugger who

attacks one of her older female neighbors. One of Samantha's best qualities is her loyalty to her

friends. When Carrie confesses to her that she's having an affair with her married ex-boyfriend "Mr.

Big," and is cheating on her boyfriend, Aidan, Samantha tells her that judging is not her style, and

offers her support. Although she fights with Charlotte a few times, they always manage to get past

    their differences and make up.

Despite having trouble adjusting to Miranda having a child, shewillingly gives up a coveted hair appointment and sends Miranda in her place, staying behind to

babysit and give her friend a much-needed break.

In the show's last season, Samantha is diagnosed with breast cancer. She faces the challenge head-

on, playing with her look by wearing outrageous wigs, hats, and headscarves after she loses her

hair to chemotherapy. In one of the final episodes, she gives a speech for a cancer benefit dinner,

and receives a standing ovation for removing her wig onstage and admitting that she was suffering

with hot flashes. The audience appreciated her candour and honesty, and many of the women in

the audience stood up and removed their own wigs.

    Samanthas Men

    Samantha meets her match ...

Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall) met her match in hotel mogul Richard

Wright (James Remar). Though both enjoyed sleeping around, they

surprisingly found themselves in a monogamous relationship with each

other. However, Samantha could never fully trust Richard and her

suspicious proved to be true when she caught him cheating on her.

Though he convinces her to take him back, Samantha ultimately ends

the relationship when she realizes she can never trust him.

... but finds love in Smith

While dining at a new restaurant, Samantha notices a hot waiter

    named Jerry Jerrod (Jason Lewis).

Seeing the potential in his ability tobe famous, Samantha uses her PR skills to boost his acting career. The

first step: changing his name to Smith Jerrod. His fame skyrocketed,

and so did their romance. During Samantha's bout with cancer, Smith

even shaved his own hair when hers started to fall out. Four years

Charlotte York-GoldenblattCharlotte York is the daughter of Dr. Stephen Foster York and Sandra Whitehead York. She is an

art dealer and Smith College graduate (where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma) with a

Connecticut blue-blooded upbringing. She is the most conservative and traditional of the group,

placing more emphasis on emotional love than lust, and is always searching for her "knight in

shining armor." Presenting a more straightforward attitude about relationships, usually based

upon "The Rules" of love and dating, she often scoffs at the lewder, more libertine antics that

the show presents (primarily from Samantha).

It has been hinted at throughout the series, particularly in the first and second seasons, that she

is the newest close friend of the group (for example being unaware of Miranda's long-term

relationship two years prior to the start date of the series).

She gives up her career shortly aftermarrying her first husband, Trey MacDougal, but divorces him upon irreconcilable differences

concerning in-vitro fertilization, and receives a Park Avenue apartment as her divorce

settlement. She eventually remarries her seemingly less-than-perfect, but good-hearted divorce

lawyer, Harry Goldenblatt, after converting to Judaism. In the series finale, Charlotte and Harry

adopt a baby girl from China.

Charlotte is viewed by some to be the most nave of the four characters, often showing signs of

belief in the old-fashioned, "love conquers all" notion. Yet, her friends are sometimes envious

and even in awe of her overall optimism on love and life, leading Carrie to dedicate her book toCharlotte. Charlotte also possesses a soft personality towards her friends, always "being there"

    for them.

It is revealed throughout the series that Charlotte enjoyed various degrees of status in her

younger life, such as being prom queen, a varsity cheerleader, track and field captain, teen

model, and equestrienne. She is occasionally described as a WASP, an identity she seems to

happily accept. However, Charlotte later converted to Judaism.

    Charlottes Men

    Charlotte meets her prince ...

After vowing to meet the man she was going to marry, Charlotte York

(Kristen Davis) falls for Trey MacDougal (Kyle MacLachlan). After only a

month of dating, she already grows impatient and pops the question herself.

Soon after their fairytale wedding, Charlotte discovers that Trey is unable to

perform in the bedroom. After a brief separation, they make a second

attempt to reconcile by trying to have a baby. However in the end, Trey

confesses that he is not as ready as Charlotte is for children. In the end, they

    decide to divorce.

... but falls for her divorce lawyer

Charlotte begins the legal termination of her marriage with her new

divorce lawyer, Harry Goldenblatt (Evan Handler). Despite finding him

repulsive, she ends up sleeping with him and begins to reciprocate her

feelings for Harry. She then converts to Judaism after Harry tells her he

can only marry a Jewish woman. Following their traditional Jewish

wedding ceremony, the couple adopts a girl from China named Lily.

Four years later, Charlotte finds out she is pregnant and welcomes a

    baby girl, Rose.

    Miranda Hobbes

Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) is a career-minded lawyer with extremelycynical views on relationships and men. A 1990 Harvard University law

graduate from the Philadelphia area, she is Carrie's best friend, confidante,

and voice of reason. In the early seasons she is portrayed as masculine and

pathologically misandric but this image softens over the years, particularly

after she becomes pregnant by her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Steve

Brady, whom she eventually marries. The birth of her son, Brady Hobbes,

brings up new issues for her Type A, workaholic personality, but she

eventually finds a way to balance career, being single, and motherhood.

Ofthe four women, she is the first to purchase an apartment (an indicator of her

success), which she gives up when she moves into a Brooklyn townhouse in

the final season to make room for her growing family.

causing them to break up. While on friendly terms, Miranda sleeps with Steve

and ultimately gets pregnant. Though they are no longer a couple, they decide to

    raise their son together.

    ... then lands a doctor ...

    Miranda meets the charming Dr.

successful sports medicine doctor for the New York Knicks . She is

instantly drawn to Robert and soon finds herself in a short, yet

passionate relationship with him. Despite their instant chemistry,
