Today's consumers not only want high-quality products, but also companies that demonstrate a commitment to environmental responsibility, conserving biodiversity, and local community and stakeholder engagement throughout the manufacturing process.Every single step-from the supply of raw materials through to manufacturing, distribution, disposal or recycling and the management of human and natural resources, contributes to the realization of more sustainable products and services. We support companies along their path towards sustainability from the initial assessment, to the implementation of strategies and actions, up to the delivery of the results.

The European Commission recognized the importance of implementing a single EU-wide methodology for the assessment and comparison of the environmental performance of a range of products. The PEF project, therefore, was launched for 27 product categories represented by associations and major companies across the whole of the single market.

The PEF (Product Environmental Footprint) project in collaboration with the European Commission, involved the third party verication of pilot studies which analysed the environmental footprint of 27 product categories including milk /dairy products, oil, wine, pasta, leather, clothing, footwear, emulsion paint, thermal insulators, solar panels and batteries. This was a complex project which involved co-ordination, technical analysis and interfacing with diverse institutions and organizations.

In 2013 CONAI published its rst sustainability report, which reinforced its drive toward communication in the public sphere. When the updated report was issued in 2014, it was decided that a new methodology was required, capable of assessing direct costs and environmental externalities during the complete life cycle of the service offered. Therefore, a specic tool was developed which could support the company in sustainability management and reporting.

For the National Consortium for the Collection and Recovery of packaging (CONAI), Studio Fieschi has developed and manages on a yearly basis, sustainability assessment based on Life Cycle Costing (LCC) methodology. For this project we identied an assessment method and developed an IT tool capable of analysing costs and benets of the service. Results are regularly included in CONAI’s sustainability reports and those of their supply chain consortia and are made available for assessment of system efciency.

In 2010, Fiat Group (including FCA and CNH Industrial), decided to commission a specic biodiversity tool in its drive toward increased sustainability. In 2010, the international year of biodiversity, Fiat Group partnered with Studio Fieschi and the University of Turin to develop the Fiat Group Biodiversity Value Index (BVI).The BVI assesses biodiversity conditions and threats in areas around its production sites and guides prevention and recovery activities. SUSTAINABILITY ACCOUNTING TOOL: FOR SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT OF A PRODUCTION SITE

FCA production plants currently implement the international methodology WCM (World Class Manufacturing), which assesses the quality performance and continuous improvement of all operations at their sites. In this context, FCA decided that an effective system of assessment and quantication for environmental performance was also needed.

R E F E R E N C E / C O N T E X T A N D R E Q U I R E M E N T S

The objective of FCA was to improve their environmental performance reporting system through the introduction of new parameters designed to integrate environmental aspects with process management and economic factors. The Sustainability Accounting Tool provides KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) which measure the environmental and economic impact of a production site with regard to resources and emissions (e.g. energy and water consumption, waste generation, etc).

Over the last several years, the banking and nancial sectors have been increasingly focused on the area of sustainability due to interest and concern from customers and shareholders and more generally, from the market itself. Attention is now placed on the sustainability of an organization’s operational activities as well as the area of investment and consumer credit. Intesa Sanpaolo has viewed sustainability as an opportunity for improvement, and therefore, approached our organization in order to expand their knowledge of key environmental factors related to their business. Today the organization is widely recognised for its sustainability engagement and has been awarded a number of prestigious awards.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has long been aware of the important link between sport, health and the environment. Therefore, in 2015 new hosting rules for the games were put in place focusing on environmental, social and economic sustainability of the event. Following this directive, the Rome 2024 committee initiated a project aimed at the creation of a sustainable and innovative Olympic organization and included this plan in its candidature le.

To be among the rst to communicate the environmental performance of your product or service is an advantage in a market which is ever more sensitive to environmental issues. Therefore Sebach, a market leader in the rental of mobile toilet cabins, decided to take this as an opportunity to identify the best tools and methods to make sustainability an active part of its marketing and communication strategies.

Sebach’s objective was to highlight key environmental aspects of its products and develop an effective multi-level communication strategy. As a rst step, we created a company charter of sustainability commitments in order to dene the organization’s environmental policy and inform the public about activities in progress. Following this, the focus shifted to products and services offered and the formulation of a full Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) specically for the rental of portable sanitary equipment and with particular attention to environmental performance and international Product Category Rules (PCRs).

Serenity, a market leader in Italy for absorbent incontinence products, initiated its exploration into sustainable practices from the viewpoint of improving competitiveness. Convinced of the value in this new business approach, the company continued to develop its environmental sustainability skills, moving on to the identication and development of efcient and exible tools to respond to market demand.

Our collaboration with Serenity began with the organization of an environmental sustainability training course, which in 2012 led the company to becoming the rst one in its sector to develop LCAs and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for 24 products. The collaboration has been strenghtened with the development of an internal certied system for environmental data management for EPDs (EPD Process). Supported by a Tool, the EPD Process currently covers Serenity's complete product range (over 100 items).

FCA production plants currently implement the international methodology WCM (World Class Manufacturing), which assesses quality performance and continuous improvement of their sites. In this context, FCA also decided to certify all plants to the international standard ISO14046. The Verrone plant, considered a model of excellence for the FCA Group, was the rst site to be awarded ISO 14046 Water Footprint certication.

ISO 14046 Environmental Management – Water Footprint – Principles, requirements and guidelines allows organizations to measure the impact their activities may have on water resources (water footprint) and to identify strategic improvement actions. For the FCA Verrone plant, Studio Fieschi developed a water footprint assessment for processes and organization in accordance with this certication. This project was also a continuation of previous work carried out by Studio Fieschi in 2013 when we supported the plant in the creation of a method for Sustainability accounting (see Case Study SUSTAINABILITY ACCOUNTING TOOL FOR FCA PLANT).

Over the last few years, there has been a growing interest in the area of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). To underline this trend, the European Union issued the Directive 2014/95/UE (Italian legislative decree 254/16), which requires large companies and public-interest entities to publish annual non-nancial reports on various aspects of social responsibility. Under this directive, banks are considered as public-interest entities and particular attention is placed on them due to the signicant social impact their activities may have. Over the coming years, therefore, the banking community will be increasingly evaluated by their stakeholders on issues such as company policy and activities related to social responsibility and sustainability.

Intesa Sanpaolo currently integrates aspects of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) into its company policy and strategy and since 2007 has published a regular sustainability report. However, the issue and implementation of a new directive has encouraged Intesa Sanpaolo to reconsider its CSR model and its relationship to sustainability and associated factors such as stakeholder engagement and materiality analysis.
