St. Francis Borgia, Washington, MO #242400

Notes from Fr. Joe Wormek

I want to thank you all for your stewardship of me, talent and treasure which you and your family share with St. Francis Borgia Par-ish. I have no ced that there are more new

and current parishioners stepping up to take a more ac ve role in the parish, whether be it as ushers, Eucharis c Min-isters, lectors or par cipa ng in the fall fes val, the auc-

on, or the parish rummage sale. It is good that more peo-ple get involved sharing the work load, as they say.

I have also no ced that our contribu ons have gone up, have you? Electronic giving is a good way to keep our do-na ons going especially if you are at the Lake for the weekend or away on a longer vaca on. The parish office can help you with that if you need assistance.

As we get into the heat of summer and vaca on me, just a friendly reminder that if you took your Annual Catholic Appeal card home with you to please return it with your contribu on, as we s ll have a number of cards out. We have not reached our goal yet. A reminder, too, that we have received grants from this appeal during the last few years which were used for the new doors in church and to help reduce the cost of the grade school back parking lot.

Thanks for all you do, and I hope that you are able to enjoy summer!!!

Fr. Joe Wormek

Prayer Before Mass

Come Holy Spirit and quiet my heart and my head, as I gather with my friends and neighbors to celebrate Mass. I am saint and sinner. Open my ears to Your words. Open my mouth in prayer and song. Open my eyes to see Your mystery in symbol and sign. Open my heart in love for You and my neighbor. Qui-et the thoughts and distrac ons that will keep me from prayer. Strengthen me to take the Mass into my life this week. Amen.

Peter’s Pence Collec on The Peter’s Pence Collec on (PPC) has ancient roots, linking back to New Testament mes when people would provide ma-terial support to those preaching the Gospel for distribu on to those in need (see Acts 4:34- 35, 11:29). The collec on is the way we, as members of the Catho-lic Church, unite ourselves to the concerns of the Holy Father. Dona ons to this collec on support the charitable works of Pope Francis for the relief of those most in need. How Pope Francis Invites Us to Make the World Less Cold and More Just Pope Francis has encouraged us not to “fall into indifference, but become instruments of God’s mercy.” Each of us has been called to be an instrument of God’s mercy and to be a witness of charity. For “it is precisely in the measure to which we open ourselves to others that life becomes frui ul, society regains peace and people recover their full dignity.” How We Can Join Pope Francis and Be a Witness of Charity By suppor ng this collec on, you assist the charitable works of Pope Francis. Your generosity is a witness to charity and helps the Holy See reach out compassionately to those who are mar-ginalized. For example, with support to the PPC and the assis-tance of the Vicar of the La n Patriarchate in Amman, Jordan, a funding network has been created to respond to the needs of Immaculate Concep on Parish School in Al Huson. The par-ish assists more than 800 children, many of whom are refu-gees from the war in Syria. Al Huson is located about 12 miles from the border with Syria; in recent years, the arrival of many refugees has heavily impacted the economy and daily life in the city. With help from university students in the parish who teach math, Arabic, and English, hundreds of children not in the school system are learning to read and write. the world How You Can Help PRAY

Pray for the Holy Father as he reaches out compassionately to make the world less cold and more just and for those around the world who are suffering and will benefit from this collec on.

SHARE As a way to spread the message of mercy and peace, share this informa on with someone who might be interested and tell others how Pope Francis supports the marginalized.

GIVE Please give generously to this collec on as a witness of char-ity and offer hope to those who suffer around the globe.

Stewardship Reflec on “…Behold, one is coming a er me; I am not worthy to unfasten

the sandals of his feet.” – ACTS 13:25 Stewardship is a lifestyle, it’s not a program or a process. It’s how we are called to live our lives twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week! It challenges us to live “God-centered” lives, not “self-centered” lives. Reflect on your daily ac vi es, do you do them for the glory of God or for the glory of your own name?

Dynamic Catholic, Alive – Chosen and Called How beau ful the readings are today for this solem-

nity They remind us that God knows us and loves us so deeply. He knows us be er than we know ourselves. Even before we were born, He saw what our lives would be like. Just like the prophet Isaiah and John the Bap st, we are called to be serv-ants of God who dedicate our lives to Him. Our Triune God must be the center of everything that we do, not just another item among the many on a checklist. Today, invite God to come into every dimension of your life, especially your family life. With this approach of consecra on to God, making Him the focal point of our rela onships, our work, and our leisure, we can bring others into a similar rela onship with God and help them recognize their true iden ty as sons and daughters called to serve. Let us be like St. John the Bap st, who con-stantly sought to point others to Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, during his short life. archstl.org/dynamic

SFB Library Book Review

Book: No Turning Back By: Donald H. Calloway, MIC From run away teens to Marian Priest, Fr. Donald Calloway has inspired thousands to trust in our Lord’s mercy. This is an amazing, cap va ng story because The Divine Mercy is an amazing and cap va ng reality. The power of Jesus and Mary move through this story like the power of a 10-foot Pacific wave. Read this book and watch the same wave li Donald Calloway that li ed Paul and Augus ne, Francis and Igna us, from “incorrigible” and “impossible” to “radically converted.” It’s the old, old story, and it’s irresis bly new every me. Here, it’s told with winsome candor and simplicity by an ex-druggie, ex-criminal surfer-priest.

The St. Francis Borgia Parish Library is located on the street level entrance of Jesuit Hall. We have so many wonderful books to assist you on your Faith Journey. Check it out!

Dear Parish Families,

Our children are our future! By defini on, op -mism is a disposi on or tendency to look on the more favorable side of events or condi ons and to expect the most favorable outcome. At SFBGS, we are feeling incredibly op mis c

Josie Polizzi was recognized for enduring op mism and exempli-fying the Op mist Creed by the Op mist Club of Washington! Birth of John the Bap st - Hold the Locusts The birth of John is much like the birth of Jesus.

Neither mother expected to be pregnant (Elizabeth was very old, Mary was not married.) Both were announced by an angel; both were given a name by the angel (Luke 1:13 and 1:31.) All who heard about the births were amazed (Luke 1:66 and 2:18.) It should be no surprise that the two mothers got together to discuss these things (Luke 1:39-56.) Most likely, talking about their experiences helped them to believe what the angel had said. You might say Elizabeth prepared Mary to be the mother of the Savior. And years later John would help people pre-pare to accept Jesus as their Savior. Now the Church has always taught that saints are not just admired, they are to be imitated. So how do we imitate John? Probably not by living in the desert and eating locusts and wild honey. (I'll take the hon-ey, but hold the locusts.) Let's look at a few of the things John is known for and how we can learn from them. John lived in the desert to prepare for his ministry. How do we pre-pare to serve the Lord? Have you ever gone on a retreat, not just be-cause it was required by your school or job, but because you wanted to take time to be with the Lord? Many retreat houses have weekend retreats for those who can't take off work. The point of a retreat is not just to get away, but to learn how to pray or to deepen your prayer life. As we learn to pray better, we get to know the Lord better. That brings us to the second way to imitate John: Lead others to Christ. We need to know the Lord to bring others to him. With the power of the Holy Spirit we received in the sacrament of Confirmation, we can give good examples of Christian love, share our faith, stand up for justice, and encourage others to grow in faith. Like John, we may also meet resistance, but we can be confident that the Lord will be with us al-ways. Tom Schmidt, J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
