What is organization’s mission and historical background?

Routt County United Way's mission is to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of our community to succeed in key impact areas : Early Childhood Education, Youth Success, Financial Stability, Health and Crisis Services. We have served Routt County since 1982.

What target populations are served? For the $5,000 grant, birth to 5 years of age. For the general operating grant of $1,000 our United Way primarily focuses on low income individuals and families. Beside early childhood education, our efforts are directed toward youth success, stabilizing families, working with low income seniors, and supporting crisis services in Routt County.

Describe services provided/accomplishments/goals of the organization

Routt County United Way conducted listening tours throughout the community in 2016. The results of the tours are driving our new strategic plan. For early childhood education we discovered that 39% of the children entering kindergarten are not proficient in literacy. In one school district they are spending their entire state literacy grant on one-one-one tutoring for every middle school student to get them up to proficient level. There are pockets all over Routt County of children that do not have books in the home. Most homes that do not have many books are low income but not all homes. This is why we investigated current reading/book programs and decided on the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.

The Imagination Library is available to all children regardless of income and is free to their family. An age appropriate book is sent to the child's home every month from birth to five years of age. (60 books total) The high quality books are mailed straight from Penguin Publishers in the child's name to the child's home. The books are selected by national educators who are experts in literacy and include two bilingual books a year (English and Spanish) per age group.

Along with the Imagination Library, we want to set up two volunteer reading programs in Routt County. One is teaching parents how to read with their children. The other volunteer program is reading to first and second grade children.

Our goal is to raise $100,000 to launch this program for Routt County children for five years. There are 1,350 children currently between the ages of birth and 5 years. We already have $25,375 in house. To build capacity for the small United Way staff (we have 2 full time employees) we are in the process of hiring an Americorp VISTA to help us launch this county-wide program. ($10,000 of the $25,000 will be for this purpose).

What evidence do you have to indicate that your outcomes are being achieved? What is your data collection methodology?

We will use The Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) which is a set of procedures and measures for assessing the acquisition of early literacy skills from kindergarten through sixth grade. We will monitor kindergarten and 3rd grade reading levels. We are working with all three school districts, and charter schools to receive the test scores on a yearly basis.

Attach operating budget for current fiscal year.

2016 IMPACT REPORTDear Friends,

Nearly 33 years ago, United Way came to Routt County to make a difference in people’s lives. Today, we couldn’t be more proud of the accomplishments Routt County United Way has achieved. Working side-by-side with passionate people like YOU, Routt County United Way tackles the big, complex, even daunting issues that face Routt County. We are so grateful for your support.

In 2015, Routt County United Way moved into the historic Steamboat Springs downtown neighborhood and began our work in the 443 Oak Nonprofit Center. We’ve welcomed many of you through our doors through our many community-based programs. Community members like YOU are working with us to forge unexpected partnerships and solve the big issues facing Routt County.

Together, we work toward our four Community Impact Goals, ensuring: (1) children enter school ready to succeed; (2) at-risk youth have opportunities to be successful; (3) individuals and families can meet their basic needs and have every opportunity to move toward economic success; and (4) crisis and emergency services are available to every Routt County citizen.

Last year, because of YOU: • 98 children attended preschool getting the skills they need to be school-ready • The Routt to Work Collaborative changed more than 30 lives as families gained self–sufficiency. • Two-thirds of the youth in Routt County were exposed to mentoring and safe growth opportunities.

Your support made these accomplishments possible. When the full force of the Routt County community is UNITED, we can solve the big problems together.

Thank you, as always, for standing with us. We hope to see you soon.

Warm regards,

Kate Nowak, Scott Colby Executive Director Board Chair Routt County United Way Routt County
