HURRY BEFORE THE MISSILES HIT

WHEELWORKS BY BLAKE TATUM

Sometimes I am afraid to turn on the television. The news is wrought with doom and gloom. If the climate change doesn’t get you some third world country will. Watching it is enough to ruin your mood. So I say let’s focus on something that makes us happy. Fast cars and driving them around a ribbon of asphalt. To change everybody’s feelings, I will give you an update on what’s going on with the club.

First off we are three events into the year.Competition Licensing School (aka Driver’sSchool) graduated 43 students. The weathercooperatedandbyallaccountsagoodtimewashadbyall.Driver’sschoolhasalwaysbeenheldearly in the year so the students that graduatedcould race in the upcoming season. It is heldonce a year and it used to take at least threeweekends to get through it, with the groundschool, and the two on track weekends. Beforetheclassesbeginthestudentsfilloutapersonalprofilequestionnaire.Oneofthethingsthatwasgleaned from this year’s profiles is that most ofthe students do not plan to race with us. Theycometoourschoolbecausenoonereallyteacheswheel to wheel competition any more. A lot ofthestudentshavepriortrackdayexperienceandwanttolearnhowtoraceinclosequarters.

Twenty years ago most of the students hadlittletonoracingexperienceandplannedonrac-ing with us. Now over half of the students haveprior racing experience or track day experienceand plan on going somewhere else. One of thereasons we get so many interlopers is becauseof the outstanding reputation our school has. There are plenty of opportunities to learn theracinglinewhetheritisatrackdayoracarclub, but thenumberofclubsorprofessional schoolsthat teachyouaboutactualracing isverysmall.Whenastudentgetshisnovicepermitsignedoffit isaringingendorsement fromthe instructorsstating that they would be willing to risk theirownliferacingwiththatthatindividual.

Because the audience for the competitionlicensing school has changed it has been sug-gested to the Board that the date be changed.Thedirectorsoftheschoolfeela laterdatewilldraw more people. They also feel that we arepushingourluckbyhavingitsoearlyintheyearwhenfoulweathercanchaseawayalargenum-berofthestudents.SonextyearifFebruaryrollsaround and the competition licensing school isnotonthecalendaryouwillknowwhy.

As has been tradition for the past severalyears, the season opener was at ThunderhillRaceway. Although we did not set any atten-

dancerecords theeventwentoffwell.Thefirstrace of the year gives you a clue as to whichclassesareseriousaboutrunningfortheregionalchampionship.IcantellyouifyoudonotrunaMiata or a Spec Racer Ford, it is not too late togearupfortherunatthetopstepatthebanquet.

Our one and only Majors event was held thefirst weekend of April. Last year the club triedsomethingdifferentwiththeMajorseventwhenwe made it a three day event with the Saturdayrace on the Thunderhill 3 mile course and theSundayfeatureraceonthe5milecourse.Welostmoney on this event mainly because we spentmoney on promoting and meals that we wouldnot normally have done. When you add in thequestionable weather that presented itself thatweekend, everythinglineduptomaketheeventless than successful. So this year the Majorsevent was back to the two day, high entry fee, very little track time schedule. It is no wonderthat the participation level was just okay. Oneof the major problems with the Majors is thatinordertoqualifyfortheRunoffsapersononlyneedtoattendthreeMajorsevents.

We had an opportunity to add a majors toourcalendarbutdecidedtopass. Bynottakingthe second Majors event, CalClub was able tohost three Majors events. With three events insouthernCaliforniathereisnoneedfortheguysracingdowntheretocomeuphereandrunourevent.

TheFormulaFraceduringtheMajorsweek-end had some very close competition. In theSunday race it was a three way scrap betweenRick Payne, Skip Streets, and Chuck Horn.Chuck has had a very successful season so farbut on lap 12 of the Sunday feature Chuck andSkip touched wheels. Chuck ended up gettingcollectedbyBradHayesatahighrateofspeed.LuckilyeveryonewasOK.Icannotsaythesameaboutthecars.

CominguponMay5-6,SpecRacerFordcom-petitor Court Cardinal is sponsoring the event.CourtisthemanagerofCasinoFandangoinCar-son City, Nevada. Court is giving away Casinopackages valued at $300 for the Saturday race

winners and 100 volunteer packages valued at$175.ThispackageiscourtesyoftheworkdonebyDavidVodden.LastIcheckednootherregionhasapromotionlikethis.

Speaking of promotions, Thunderhill Race-wayParkhassweetenedthepotforattendingtheSCCAeventsheldthere.Theywillbegivingoutover $5,000 in cash and prizes for those peoplewho race three of the four races at Thunderhillthisyear.

AftertheThunderhillMayeventtheclubgoesto Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca on June 1-4.This is the only time all year where SCCA rac-erscantestatMazdaRaceway.Inadditiontothetest day the Spec Racer Ford Festival race willbe added. Bruce Richardson of AccelRaceTek,Vistage, and SCCA Enterprises will be sponsor-ing a BBQ for Spec Racer Drivers on Saturdayand will have over $2,500 in prizes for partici-pating SRF drivers. In addition the Spec RacerFord racers get an additional race added to theschedule.

Our one and only visit to Sonoma Raceway(we have tried to get more) will be June 30 toJuly 2. This will be the Spec Miata Festival.AgaintheGroupSevendriverswillhaveabonusrace attached to their schedule. Saturday nightwillbeabarbequeatIanCook’smotorhome.Atthebarbequecashandprizeswillbeawardedviaadrawingandyoumustbepresenttowin.Withthe announcement of the Runoffs coming toSonoma Raceway in 2018, expect an abundanceofentrants.Itisnevertooearlytotuneyourcarto the track and anyone with eyes on Runoffsbraggingrightswillbethere.

Last year we eliminated the Illgen 4 hourenduro.WeendedtheseasononaSaturdayandhad the banquet in Willows. I hated that weended the racing season on a Saturday and didnot likehowwecouldnotfigureoutsomethingto do with the Sunday following the banquet. This year the enduro is back! Anyone runningthe 25 hours of Thunderhill needs to come tothiseventasatuneup.

Speaking of the banquet, we are working onaseriouschangetothisevent.Wehavereceived

complaints regarding the timing of the eventandthelocation.Iamcurrentlyintheprocessofexploringacompletelydifferentlocationandfor-matforthisevent.Staytuned!

Some of you may have read the article abouttherumormill inlastmonth’sWHEEL.Thebot-tomlineisthisallgotstartedbecauseofaseriousneedforvolunteerstoworkourpro-events.Con-trary to popular opinion you do not have to be aveteran volunteer with the club to be useful attheseevents.ThereareplentyofjobsthatneedtobefilledsotheclubcanmeettheircommitmenttoMazdaRaceway.

This is the perfect opportunity for club mem-bers to use the DRAFT card. DRAFT stands forDRivers Assistance For Testing. To participatein the program, the driver contacts a volunteerchiefandarrangestovolunteer.Afterworking, theChiefwillgivethedriveranofficialDRAFTcardwith the hours worked signed off. Unfortunately as I was typing this article thetelevisioninthebackgroundsuddenlygotlouder.Itwasanewsflash.Thenewsflashwasthelocaltelevision station trying to get my attention so Iwould watch their newscast. The lead story wasabout some third world country testing someweapon, andhowthiswasa threat to theUnitedStates. Oh no! Back to the doom and gloom oftoday’sworld. MAY 2017 THE WHEEL 1312 SFRSCCA.ORG MAY 2017

ON SEPTEMBER 10, 1962, BARELY FOUR months after the conclusion of the 24 Hours

of Le Mans, one of the cars from that race sat

in the paddock at Vaca Valley Raceway wait-

ing for the beginning of a Divisional race. The

car was a Maserati Tipo 151 enter by well known

Bay Area car dealer Bev Spencer. This was not

just another race car but a special car, a former

Briggs Cunningham team car.

Cunningham had been a regular competitor at

Le Mans beginning in the 1950’s originally with

a pair of Cadillacs athen progressing through

a series of his own designed race cars. Com-

ing close but not quite on the podium he con-

tracted with the Maserati factory to build two

special coupes for the 1962 race. The cars,

designated Tip0 151 with sn. 004 and 006 were

front engine models with powerful 4-liter, 4

cam, 350hp V-8s providing plenty of power for

the 24 Hour race. Unfortunately, 006 driven

by Jim Kimberly and Dr. Dick Thompson was

retired after five hours as a result of failing

brakes and 004, five hours later with a failed

suspension.

After the car was repaired, Cunningham

entered it in races at Elkhart Lake and Bridge-

hampton race with Augie Pabst at the wheel

finishing third and a DNF respectively. Next

race was at Riverside for the LA Times Grand

Prix where the car finished seventh. After the

race the car was sold to Bev Spencer, the first

of several cars he would campaign for the next

several years. For the Vaca Valley race, Spen-

cer hired local hot shoe, Stan Peterson to drive

the car. Upon inspecting the car, Peterson was

skeptical of the cars chances based his assess-

ment of the cars design.

Despite Peterson’s misgivings about the car, he

was in the middle of the front row at race time. On his right was

the new Corvette Z06 driven by Paul Rheinhart and on his left, Dan

Gillum’s Maserati 150S, both good drivers. Also in the field were

Merle Brennan in his Jaguar D-type/Chevy and the Ferrari/Chevy

of Bill Sherwood. At the green flag, Brennan shot to the front

from the second row with Peterson right on his tail. The positions

remained the same as the crossed the S/F line to begin lap two.

As they approached the turn one right hander, Peterson drifted

wide into the marbles, then onto the grass and rolled the Maserati.

Whether this development was due to a mechanical issue or Peter-

son’s lack of any practice time in the car was up for discussion.

Fortunately, the car landed in a muddy area which absorbed much

of the impact of the crash minimizing the damage but ruined the

cars debut in the SFR.

With primarily cosmetic damage, Peterson repaired it in his Oak-

land speed shop and two weeks after the Vacaville event, the car

appeared in the San Francisco Imported Car Show. In December,

the Tipo 151 had a brief on-screen appearance in a short movie called

“This is Laguna Seca” directed by SFR photographer Bill Hewitt.

Shortly thereafter, the car was advertised for sale in Road & Track

magazine for $7,950. It was purchased by Southern Californian drag

race team owner Chuck Jones who wanted to go road racing.

Chuck Jones entered it under his Team

Meridian banner for driver Skip Hudson at

Cotati – where Hudson drove it with the

doors removed finishing third. Jones then

advertised it for sale in the July 27, 1963, edi-

tion of ‘Competition Press’, asking $8,250. In

the absence of attractive offers for the car, it

was then driven solo by Hudson in the Road

America ‘500’ officially finishing 17th. Briggs

Cunningham was so impressed by Hudson’s

effort he gave the team his remaining stock

of Maserati 151 components, including three

spare V8 engines, two gearboxes and the

burned-out wreckage of ‘004’ – which was

subsequently buried in a landfill site near

Newport Beach. Jones retired the Maserati,

painted it red and registered it as a Califor-

nia street car. Two years later, he sold the

Maserati to a San Francisco resident for

cash and a Lincoln Continental.

The car was held in private hands until 1983,

when Maserati enthusiast, Peter Kaus, pur-

chased the car and returned it to its origi-

nal Cunningham colors to display it in his

Rosso-Bianco museum in Aschaffenburg,

Germany. In 2006 the Maserati was sold to

Lawrence Auriana, who undertook a full res-

toration to make it race-worthy once again.

The car was entered in that year’s Rolex

Monterey Motorsports Reunion and driven

by Derek Hill. It was subsequently raced at

the Goodwood Festival of Speed and then

sold to an American collector at auction for

a reported $1.5 million at the end of 2006.

And to think, had you been around in 1962,

you could have bought this car for less than $8,000!

JUST AROUND THE CORNER DRIVING AT SONOMABY ART MUNCHERYAN

I was asked to give my views on driving and racing at Sonoma for our upcoming Spec Miata Festival in July. What are my qualifications for being assigned this task?

Well, I have to behonest: I don’t have

any more experiencedrivingSonomathanmost

of you do. I only can claimthat I have many hours of coaching, sitting intherightseat, andIhavemadejustabouteverymistake in every corner on this track over thelast thirty years, and hopefully I have learnedjustalittlefrombothoftheseexperiences.Asadrivinginstructorandcoach,Ihavetodiagnosestudent errors, and then find the right wordsto correct them, so I have to be absolutely surethat what I am saying will work. What followsaremyopinionsonly.Ibelievetheyarebasedonsound physical and geometric principles (you’llseewhyinabit),butyouofcoursearethefinaljudge of what will work best for you and your

What I have found, in my opinion, is thereare several mythologies about driving Sonoma.Oneis“straightenoutthe“Esses”. TheotheristakingtheNASCARlineupthehillfromTurn1into Turn 2, staying tight on driver’s left. Bothoftheseimpededmyracingsuccessinthe1990’swhileracingmy240ZinITS.Ihadbeentoldbysupposedly hotshot drivers that they straightenout the Esses...... just drive right through them.So I tried that for several years. It was a hugestruggle to keep the car balanced and smooth.ButIwasdeterminedtomake itwork,as that’swhat I’d been told. Then one race, I followedBrandon Kraus’s Porsche 944. We were prettyeven all around the track, with me even pull-inghimoutofTurn6justabit. Untilwegotto

8,8A,9,and10. Hewalkedaway. WhileIwastrying to straight-line these turns, his line wasall swoopy and curvy. What gives? It certainlywasn’tapoweradvantage.Hewasjustsmootherand quicker. He also had an advantage on megoing up the hill into Turn 2. While I took theNASCARtightline,whichalwaysforcedmeintoanearlyapexatTurn2,heagaintracedanicearcbetweenTurns1and2,andagainhadtheadvan-tage.

Frommycoachingandtrackwalks, andfromwatching the pro IMSA and SCCA drivers, Imade certain observations. The reasons for mymajorshiftindrivingstyleandthelessonsthatIlearnedfollow:

1. Thesteeringwheelisyourenemy:themorethetiresandchassisarecalledupontogen-eratecorneringforces,howeverslight,themore

tractionistakenawayfromtheforwarddirection,accompaniedbymorefriction.

2. Thereforescribethe largestpossiblearcineachturn, usingthewholetrackwidthinmostcases, sothatthetiresandsuspensionhavetodothe least amount ofwork. Thismeans lessbrak-ing, more maintenance of momentum, and morestraight-ahead acceleration. This makes lifeeasieronthemechanicalcomponentsandonthedriver, and isultimatelysafer. Every“chirp”youhear from a tire means that much more frictionwasgenerated.Tirenoiseisanexcellentauditoryself-test.

Note: Thisruledoeshavemodifications, suchas ifone turnrequiresa tightexit tosetup foraproperentrance(arc)intothenextturn.SeeItem#5below.

3. Each turn has three reference points:turn-in,apex,andtrackout.Connectthesepointswith arcs – NEVER straight lines, unless you arestraighteningoutaseriesofslightlyoffset“Esses”.“Slightly”meanslessthanacar’swidthoffset.

4. TheSearsPoint“Esses”aretoooffsetto“straightline”,so….

5.Leadeachturn.Largeturnradii(biggestpossible arcs) must be integrated with the nextturninsequence.Forinstance,begintheturningarcforTurn8waybackatTurn7B(bytheaccessroadondriver’sright).Scribeaslargearadiusaspossible, ending the actual turn maneuver at theendoftheapexcurbofTurn8,attheextremeleftside.Thissetsupanimmediateturn-inpointforTurn8Atoscribea largearcallthewaythroughover the hill to the yellow line on driver’s leftgoingintoTurn9.Again,lateapex8Aattheendof that curb. Other sets of turns require similarintegration, as if leading your partner (the track)inadance.Youwillthereforebecompletingyourturns before the actual track does underneathyourcar.

6. There are four sets of turns at Sonomathataresimilarandshouldbedriveninasimilarmanner (see #5 above). They are Turns 1A and2, Turns 3 and 3A, Turns 8 and 8A, and Turns9 and 10. Scribe arcs, not straight lines, so thateachsecondturninthesesets(2,3A,8A,10)canbe approached with the full width of the track“OPEN” to you, not constricted. For instance, ifyouscribealargearcthroughTurn9,goingabouthalfwayout(tothemiddleofthetrack)youwillapproachan“open”Turn10suchthatthecarwillhavecompleteditsTurn9arcandcangostraightinthebrakingzoneforTurn10,extremedriver’sleft.Theentirewidthofthetrackisopentoyou.AlargearccannowbescribedforTurn10usingthe maximum amount of road width from entryto exit. If, however, Turn 9 is taken all the waythrough on extreme driver’s left – as is commonpracticeby trying to“straightenout” the“Esses”-- you will approach Turn 10 looking at a verynarrow opening as you try to finish Turn 9. Thecar will not have completed its rotation and willbe pointed directly at a very early apex in Turn

10. TherightsideofthechassiswillstillbefullyloadeduponentrytoTurn10.Straight-linebrak-ing will be impossible (the car may actually lockuptheleftfrontbrake!),andyouwillbeinrecov-ery mode all the way through Turn 10 withoutbenefit of using the entire road width. Crashescanhappenhere.

7. In order to scribe a proper arc, simplegeometry tells us that the car must always be onthe tangent to that arc, i.e. on a line perpendicu-lartothearcradius.Sometimesthiscanbecoun-ter-intuitive. For instance, it is probably obviousto most drivers that one cannot approach Turn3 with the car aimed at the apex, as the apex is“aroundthecornerandupthehill”.ExitingTurn2andaimingtoosoonfortheTurn3apexwouldpullthecarinward,driver’sleft,waytooearlytobegin the turn, causing a very early apex whichwouldshootthecaruphilltotheinsideapproachof Turn 3A, causing yet another early apex! Therefore, we approach Turn 3 actually pointingAWAYfromtheapex....thecar isheaded into thehillside straight ahead right at Turn-in. You areon the tangent to the arc into Turn 3. CompleteTurn3sothatyouagainarepointedawayfrom3Aat 3A turn-in. But the same holds true for Turn8.Tostayonthetangenttothechosenlargearc,thecarmustexitTurn7BactuallypointingtotheTurn One grandstands, NOT to the Turn 8 apex!Thus,togetsetontheproperarcgoingintoTurn8,asyouleave7B,aimthecarattheStartFinishgrandstands,wayoff inthedistance,tobeginthearc.........counterintuitive,buttryit.Itworks!

8. CompleteTurn8andlinkuptothenextbroad arc through 8A, apexing again at the endofthe8Acurb. Letthecardriftoutoverthehill(with confidence! You can’t see the edge of thetrackbutit’sthere!)allthewaytotheyellowline, extreme driver’s left. Trace that line and let thetrack curve around to the left underneath you.You are now at the center of the track throughTurn9,NOThuggingtheleftside.

9. Same idea with entering Turn 10: TakeTurn 9 in a wide, mid-track arc, and then aim atthe “T” in “TOYOTA” on the outside wall (as ofthiswriting),notattheapex, inordertoscribetheproperarcofwidestradius. Onceagain, refer toItem5above.Youcangetontheentrycurbontheleft,runningmoreorlessstraight.Itmakessomenoise. Turn in early and gently enough to hit amidturnapex.Thenlet‘erdriftallthewayouttotheexitcurbs–morenoise.

Corollary A to #7: Do not hold a line point-ing away from the apex upon entry for too long! This puts you beyond the arc, forcing you to getbackonlinebymakingasharperturn.Pickyourturn-in point and generate the arc by taking intheentireturninyourvisionfield.Letyourbraindothegeometric CorollaryBto#7: Conversely, don’t“wanderin”onapproach. You can approach Turn 6 (a long Phase 3turn)severalways: Fromthe leftside(there isahumpthat ismorepronouncedthere)whereyoucanholdatight lineall thewaythrough(a“longapex”),orfromthemiddlewhereyoucangradu-ally bring the car in to a late apex, or from mid-trackwhereyouareangledtotheleftsothatyoucan “diamond off” the turn – angled in, driver’sleft, driftingoutmidway, rotating, andthengoinginagainforthelateapex.Oneadvantagewiththislast technique is that you have a longer piece ofpavementfacingyouoverthecrestofthehill,giv-ing you a slightly longer braking zone, or in caseyourbrakinggoesalittlewrongsomeextraspacetorecover.However,itdoesrequireatighterrota-tion mid turn. Stay balanced, but work to findwhereyoucanfeedinthrottleandunwindsteer-ingassoonaspossible.

Turn 7 can be taken at least three ways: Tightdoubleapex,ormissthefirstapexandhitthesec-ond,orhitthefirstapexandmissthesecond.Thefirst choice travels the least distance and givesyou a defensive line going in. However, there isatighterrotation,sopowerinPhase4maycomeabitlaterataslightlyslowerspeedthanwiththeother two choices. The second choice sets youup for an early rotation and allows and earlierPhase4throttle–goodforqualifying,absenttraf-fic, especially with high horsepower cars. Thethird choice is usually a result of an inside passandearlythrottle,whichnecessitatesopeningupthearcasmuchandassoonaspossible.Pickandchooseassuitsthesituation.The “Esses”, Turn 10 and Turn 11 are taken asdescribed above. I like to play around with theentrancetoTurn11.Idonotenterallthewaytodriver’sleft,asistheclassicschoolline.You’llgetpassedeasilyandyoutravelfurther. EXTRA TIPS:

1. Learn to left foot brake (on the street first!!!!Or better yet, in a kart). This is especially easywithmodernpaddleshiftcars.2. Complete each turn before starting the next,especiallyTurn3 into3Aand8 into8A. Other-wise, you will not have finished rotating the carenough to complete the turn and set up for the

Catch a loose condition with a little throttle. This will keep the weight on the rear wheels, especially if the car gets light over the crest ofTurns3A,6,and8A.5. If you accidently early apex, hold that insideline and make it a “long apex” until the propertrack out point is reached. Hold steady throttleuntil the car is ready to track out.
