March Madness with the SFV 99s!!!

First of all, I would like to thank Jim Dunn, owner of the Airtel Hotel, who has agreed to have us stay on as his favorite customers for our monthly chapter meetings in the Amelia Earhart Room at the Airtel. He told me, he just loves to have us pilots at his hotel and there was no way he was going to say no to us! So, we will be there at least through June 2016.

Secondly, much thanks to Lance Garver for opening up his home for us to use for a terrific BBQ after the Date festival in Indio. Read more about this fun Chapter outing later!

Thirdly, take a look at our chockfull dance card schedule this month!!!! We have functions to attend and educate in every week!

And finally, it’s hard to stay humble, when as a Chapter, we are so cohesive and productive these days! It is so apparent that my chapter sisters take their Chapter very seriously and want it to flourish and want to nurture its future!

BCCHS Career Fair

The San Fernando Chapter will have a booth at the Career Fair if we have some volunteers.

The SFV99s have done a lot of career fairs in the past. We pass out info about the 99s, Young Eagles, and Explorers. If other SFV99s are willing to help - I can do the leg work. I think career fairs are really part of our mission statement.

Birmingham Community Charter High School is excited to have a Career Fair on Friday, March 27, 2015. We would love for you to participate in the event. The fair will take place in our main gym from 8:30-12:30 and we expect about 1000-1500 11th and 12th grade students to attend throughout the 4 hours. Students will rotate through booths/tables during the event to gather information about career and employment opportunities.

I look forward to a favorable reply, and just as soon as I do I will fill you in with more event details. If you cannot commit to the 4 hour block, it would be wonderful if you could at least attend a 1 or 2 hour time slot such as 8:30-9:30, 9:30-10:30, 10:30-11:30, or 11:30-12:30.

Thank you,

It is time for the 10th annual "The Sky’s the Limit" Aviation Career Day 2015!

This year’s event will take place on Friday, March 20th, 2015 at the historic MP Aero hangar at the Van Nuys Airport from 9:00AM to 2:00PM. In the past nine years and with your help, we have allowed over 10,000 local high school students the opportunity to learn about the exciting and challenging career paths that are available in the aviation and aerospace industries. This is a great opportunity for students to get a real hands-on look into the aviation industry and network with many individuals. I would like to invite you to participate as an exhibitor for this year’s event. Your participation and willingness to make a difference for our youth is admirable. Together, we can expand the horizons of our youth and pave the growth for this industry that we love so much. We will have a booth at the Career Day. There will be about 1200 High School Students attending. We will talk to them about Careers, Scholarships and The Explorers. If you can help for a few hours please call Jeanne Fenimore. Thank you for your support in advance!

"Meet A Chapter Sister"

Name: Melinda M. Lyon Home town: Short Hills, NJ (I moved a lot by age nine: Columbus, OH 2x, Kirkwood, MO, Hutchinson, KS 2x, Des Plaines, IL, then Short Hills, NJ. Airport I fly out of: Not regularly flying, but our Meyers 200 is based at Flabob Airport. Favorite aircraft: Cessna 182. I wish I had mine back. When and where did you get your license? Started at Danbury, CT; finished with SFV99 Elizabeth Dinan at Santa Monica Airport, 1978. Where did you fly for your cross country: Well, I was supposed to go to Porterville but it was really clag-gy and I got "temporarily disoriented" and landed at Tulare. I had been advised to act nonchalant, order gas, go in and find the telephone booth which would have a directory with the name of the town on it, then go in the ladies' and look it up on the chart. I did all this but unfortunately I had flown off the sectional so had to call back to SMO and confess. Do you own an airplane, if so, what type?: John and I own a 1959 Meyers 200, bright red. Where is your favorite fly-in spot?: Cable Union Airport in Northern Wisconsin, just yards from upper Michigan. John and I were there for a Meyers Fly-In and had dinner the first night in the big old log dining room with moose heads on the wall. The menu had a place for a daily typewritten section headed "Our Lighter Fare," and we read "Roast Pork, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn on the cob, apple cobbler." Our lighter fare? After a while we noticed the girth of the Wisconsin natives and understood. Hobbies: Gardening and cats. What skill do you have or factoid about you would surprise most people?: I was a Founding Member of the New York Radical Feminists. What will you be doing in five years?: More of the same!

Date Festival Fly-In turned Drive-In (due to weather)

February 21-22, 2015

What a treat! I’d never been to the Date Festi-val and to share the experience with my 99s sisters and a few 49 1/2s was a lot of fun. Comparing the aerodynamics of pigs, ostriches, zebras, and emus to small aircraft was quite educational. And of course there were the dates, tasting and comparing the different varie-ties and discussing which would pack well and be the least messy to eat while piloting a flight. The piece de resistance was BBQ dinner at Anne Marie & Mike’s friend Lance’s house. On our way over in the fifteen passenger van, Anne Marie pointed out movie stars’ homes and other various historical landmarks. At Lance’s house, we gathered round exchanging flying adven-tures and laughs for many hours. On Sunday, we met in the lobby of our hotel for a quick breakfast. We ended our adventure with a trip to the Date Store and Museum, each saying goodbye to the other with a date shake in hand.

If you missed this event, don’t miss the next. It’s like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get or what the weather’s gonna be like!!!!

Thank You Anne Marie and Mike!

Say Again?! Radio Communications

I don’t know about you, but the first time I ever heard an aircraft radio, the guy from ATC might as well have been speaking Greek. I might catch a word here and there, but it was pretty much gobbledygook. Once I learned to “speak aviation”, with its phrases, acronyms and special vocabulary, I felt like I could keep track of what was going on, but I had to practice to be able to answer the radio calls to me in a clear, concise way and not end up tongue-tied saying “er, uh…” when I needed to have a quick answer. Then I

went off and started on my instrument rating and things got strange all over again. I was busy trying to keep the pointy end forward without looking outside and these people wanted coherent answers from me. Sigh! If you are new to flying or perhaps don’t fly very much, your radio skills could be somewhat less than you’d like to have them. Here are a few things you might like to consider.

1) Listen to others – controllers and pilots both. Listen to HOW they say what they need to say and think about how that can help you to be on top of your radio communications skills. There are some very professional people out there (and there are also some people out there from whom you can learn what NOT to do, but I won’t include them here). Mostly you’ll find that they’re fairly accurate, specific, and they don’t waste words. One of my worst habits is to try to be “cheery” on the radio and that leads to additional words that aren’t really necessary. Controllers appreciate cooperation, but most of them don’t want any extra words (not even “good afternoon”), especially if they’re slinging airplanes right and left. They’d much prefer you to be crisp, accurate and to the point.

2) If you have a choice, vary the practice frequencies that you listen to. Try listening to LA Center, then So Cal, then a tower or two (especially when they’re busy). What they say and who they say it to is quite different, so you’ll get a broader education.

3) If you’re not in the air very often, get yourself some kind of an aircraft band radio. Those that are re-ceive only don’t cost much, or you can go for a transceiver. Of course, I’ve advocated “hand-held” ra-dios for years as useful things to have for getting clearances on file while you’re still pre-flighting, emer-gency use, etc., but they can also be used for just listening in on what’s going on. If I’m at my hangar at Chino working on things, I nearly always have my radio turned on to the CTAF (well, OK, I also want to know if some old warbird is coming in so I can run out and watch!).

4) Find a friend (possibly even your CFI) and practice – especially if you’re “low time” or are working on an Instrument rating. There are many times when the information given will be in a certain order and you can practice listening for that. This will really cut down on the number of times you need to ask the controller to “say again”. One good example is when a SoCal (TRACON) controller gives you final clearance for an instrument approach. First, they will tell you where you are relative to the final approach fix, then the heading to turn to and altitude to maintain to get you on the final approach course, then “cleared for the XXX approach, runway NN”, and finally when to call the tower. Another example is your initial call the tower. They do NOT want you to say your N number and then “over”. Call them by name (XXX Tower), then tell them who you are (Cessna 12345), exactly where you are (be accurate – it wastes their time to have to look around for you), and what you want. If they need to know you have the ATIS, include that, too.

P a g e 7 M a r c h 2 0 1 5 N e w s l e t t e r

5) Finally, do a little reading. You can find oodles of things if you google “aircraft radio communication”, including:

http://www.liveatc.net/, (listen to LIVE traffic all over the US) http://www.flightsimaviation.com/aviation_theory_18_Radio_Techniques.html and http://stoenworks.com/Tutorials/Aircraft%20radio%20comm.html

(Warning: I haven’t spent much time investigating these, but they seemed good at first glance.)

With a little study and some practice, you’ll be a lot less intimidated by your radio communication.

Have a SAFE flight!

Hello Ladies,

Have you ever wanted to fly your own plane in an air show? Do you have at least 100 hours in a warbird or other unique or interesting aircraft? If so, then AirShow San Diego would like to speak with you about performing in our show on June 20 & 21, 2015 at Gillespie Field!

For many years, Ninety-Nines have performed in the largest civilian air show in San Diego County and this year the AirShow committee wants to once again showcase the fabulous female pilots from nearby chapters.

To participate, you will need to be available for practices as needed prior to the show and attend man-datory pilot briefings. Performers will be invited to the private pilot party on Friday, June 19 and provid-ed with VIP tent access and aircraft fuel during the show.

Please contact me at 858-229-7314 or [email protected] for more information or to apply as soon as possible. Please forward this to any other women who may be interested in participating in the show (must be a current Ninety-Nine to perform on the team).

Thank you for helping us organize a wonderful team of ladies who will highlight what the Ninety-Nines contribute to the aviation community!

Sincerely,

Kathleen Devlin
