Stomp Out The Gap Campaign

Having learnt throughout our schooling years about the adversities that the

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people face, stemming from past injustices, the

Student Representative Council recognised the need support our Indigenous

community who face hardships and disadvantages in their daily lives. We felt that it

was important hat we take action through raising funds

and awareness. We decided to join the Cathy Freeman

Foundation “Stomp out the Gap’ campaign that aims to

improve the education of indigenous students across

the country.

Our Stomp Out The Gap campaign at

Strathfield Girls High School, spans over two

weeks and involves many activities. On 6 June,

we held a cake sale which was a huge success

despite the rain! We baked cupcakes,

lamingtons and brownies and the baking

frenzy and community spirit was amazing

because we all understood the greater good of

the cause.

Furthermore, we held a “Wear it Red” day in which all staff and students

donated a gold coin to wear red. Red is a significant colour of empowerment

for Indigenous people and Strathfield Girls wore the colour with honour and

respect.

Kylie Captain, an inspirational indigenous speaker, who addressed our school

community at a special assembly to mark Stomp Out The Gap Initiative, shared

the hardships that she personally experienced as a young indigenous girl. She

also spoke about the disadvantages that her parents and ancestors faced. She

was a truly fantastic speaker and motivated us to continue in our mission to

help those who do not have the same opportunities as we do.

Continuing on our journey to support the ‘Stomp out the Gap’ campaign the

SRC will be running a ‘Pie the teacher’ initiative on 14 June where the teacher who raises the most money will be

pied. We also plan to host a faculty relay for the teachers that will raise more funds for the campaign. This will

take place in the next couple weeks during the month of June.

Strathfield Girls High School look forward to these upcoming events and challenge ourselves to raise more and

more donations in order to help our Indigenous community. As a school we are proud to say “We Helped To

Stomp Out The Gap”

Gardening

“A little, seed for me to sow. A little earth to make it grow. A little hole, a little pat, a little wish and that is it. A little sun, a little rain and in a while, a little sprout”.

(Anonymous)

As the seasons change from autumn to winter, the gardening group has enjoyed the fitness benefits offered by our time in the great outdoors Students have been quite busy with many different gardening activities this year. We have recently planted radishes and snow peas to add some extra life! We have cleaned, raked, swept the gardens, watered the plants, hedged the edges and overall maintained the vitality of our school environment. Now, we are waiting for our plants to emerge from their little seeds. They will be warmly welcomed into the world of Strathfield Girl’s High School.

BLIGH ZONE CROSS COUNTRY CARNIVAL

On Friday, 1 June, 50 students from Year 7 through to Year 12 were selected to represent Strathfield Girls High School at the Bligh Zone Cross Country Carnival at Sydney Park Tempe. It was a cold, windy and wet day which made it difficult conditions to run. All competitors did their best to run the 3.25km track and we look forward to seeing the competitors who finished in the top 10 of their age group progress to the Sydney East carnival on 14 June.

SGHS ATHLETICS CARNIVAL

The Annual SGHS Athletics Carnival was held on Thursday, 31 May at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre. Rain stayed away for the duration of the carnival, allowing all events to be held. There were numerous participants in all events, showing the enthusiasm of the students wanting to be involved. This was reflected in the high points achieved by all Houses. The House and Vice House Captains are also to be congratulated for organising their relay teams and increasing the spirit of the carnival. Also a big thank you must go to all the student officials who assisted the staff at the events. A team will represent SGHS at the Bligh Zone Carnival on Friday 22 June.
