MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Dear Friends, Patrons, and Music Lovers,

This year marks my 10th anniversary season with the Winnipeg

Symphony Orchestra.

We have performed some of my favourite works this season with

Mahler’s 2nd and 10th symphonies, and recently Bruckner’s 4th,

but there is still so much beautiful music to take in over the next

few months.

We set Tchaikovsky’s 5th Symphony, his most personal statement,

with Alain Lefèvre’s interpretation of Rachmaninoff’s 4th Piano

Concerto. Then we will have the ultimate pairing of classical music and

animation with Disney FANTASIA: Live in Concert. We close the season with the astounding

theatrics of Cirque Mechanics, a feast for the eyes and ears. We will bring an 18-foot, pedal-

powered “Gantry Crane” on stage. If you have never seen a Cirque show before, this is the way to

see it - with live symphony orchestra!

While you are at the concert hall, I encourage you to talk to a WSO staff member or volunteer

about our next season. They will be happy to discuss your subscription package with you and let

you know all the benefits of becoming a WSO subscriber – and a member of our extended

symphony family.

I would like to thank all of our major sponsors, Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, the Richardson

Foundation, Air Canada, Investors Group and Great-West Life, who help this organization thrive.

Auf Wiedersehen, I hope to see you soon,

Alexander Mickelthwate

Music Director

Alexander Mickelthwate, Music Director

German conductor Alexander Mickelthwate is renowned for his “splendid, richly idiomatic readings” (LA Weekly),“fearless” approach and “first-ratetechnique” (Los Angeles Times). Critics have noted Alexander’s extraordinarycommand over the Austro-Germanic repertoire, commenting on the “passion, profundity, emotional intensity, subtlety and degree of perfection achieved” inBruckner’s Symphony No. 7 as “miraculous” (Anton Kuerti, 2011).

Following on from his tenure as assistant conductor with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, whichhe completed in 2004, Alexander Mickelthwate was associate conductor of the Los AngelesPhilharmonic for three years, under the direction of Essa-Pekka Salonen. Now in his tenth seasonas music director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, Alexander has significantly developedthe orchestra’s profile through active community engagement and innovative programminginitiatives like the annual New Music Festival and the Indigenous Music Festival. Chosen toperform at the Carnegie Hall Spring For Music Festival in New York, May 2014, due to “creativeand innovative programming” (CBC Manitoba Scene), the orchestra was the only Canadianensemble in the showcase. As well as significantly contributing to the New Music Festival andIndigenous Festival, Alexander led the orchestra’s first out of province tour since 1979 to theNational Arts Centre in Ottawa, launched the International Conducting masterclasses, the NewMusic Festival 2012 film project and played a major part in the acoustic overhaul of theCentennial Concert Hall.

The creation, with Dr. Paul Lehrman, of a new performance edition of George Antheil's Ballet Mecaniquefirst brought Pellicano to the public’s attention. From 2009 to 2013 he served as

music director of the Longy School of Music Conservatory Orchestra where he established a rigorousand distinctive new orchestral program. Pellicano has conducted the Orquestra Sinfonica de PortoAlegre (Brazil), Hartford Symphony Orchestra, Eastern Connecticut Symphony, New Britain Symphony,The Kallisti Ensemble, Boston’s Dinosaur Annex Ensemble and Milwaukee's Present Music. PROGRAM NOTESby James Manishen

Má vlast (My Homeland)Bedrich Smetanab. Bohemia / March 2, 1824d. Prague / May 12, 1884Composed: 1874-1879First performance: November 2, 1882(Prague), conducted by Adolf CechLast WSO performance: The Moldau:2006; Michelle Mourre, conductor.Sárka: First WSO performance

Though Prague was amusical centre duringthe eighteenthcentury, Czech musicalnationalism had towait for Bedrich

Smetana, whose integration of folk-based musical material into hiscompositions established hiscountry’s musical identity in theconcert hall. Má Vlast (My Country) is asuperb cycle of six tone poemsinspired by the native lore ofBohemia. Dedicated to the city ofPrague, the premiere was theoccasion for a patriotic rally and likeSibelius’ Finlandia, Smetana’s score hasbecome a symbol of its country’snational pride, with performancestaking place every year on theanniversary of Smetana’s death.

Vltava (The Moldau) is the Czech riverthat flows past Prague to join the Elbein the north. Smetana’s music traces ajourney he took along the river in1870, conveying both the trip and thesights along the way.Though longthought to be Czech folk-based, themain theme comes from a Swedishtune praising the countryside north ofGöteborg, where Smetana had spentfive years after 1856 as conductor ofthat city’s Philharmonic Society.

Sárka is the most story-based of thecycle. Divided into five sections, itbegins with the enraged Sárkaswearing vengeance on the male racefor infidelity of her lover. A marchsignals the arrival of the knights ledby Ctirad to punish Sárka and herrebellious court maidens. A soloclarinet depicts the cry of Sárka, towhich Ctirad begins to showsympathy. The fourth polka sectiondescribes the drunken warriors. They

fall asleep (the low bassoons) andanother clarinet solo introduces theclosing chapter leading all the men tothe slaughter, in blood and thunder style.

Piano Concerto No. 2Ludwig van Beethovenb. Bonn / December 17, 1770d. Vienna / March 26, 1827Composed: 1794-1795, revised in 1798First performance: March 29, 1795(Vienna), with the composer as soloistLast WSO performance: 2003; Imre Pallo, conductor; André Laplante, piano

So confident was theElector of Bonn in theabilities of the 22-year-oldBeethoven, in Novemberof 1792 he underwrotethe young composer’s

move from Bonn to Vienna, the musicalcapital of Europe. Franz Joseph Haydnwas no less enthused, seeing in Beethovena willing if ultimately temporary pupil.Other teachers, Salieri among them, followed, but Beethoven’s Viennese starquickly rose more as a pianist, whosepassionate intensity and originalcommunicative gifts soon had the mostelegant Viennese nobility exhibiting himat evening soirées for their friends.

Beethoven’s first Vienna public appearancetook place at a pair of concerts organizedin part by Salieri, a large affair for charityinvolving over 150 participants. Beethovenchose to play a piano concerto in B-flatmajor he had been working on,completing it just in time for theperformance, which was a success that didmuch to propel Beethoven’s career asboth composer and performer.

The B-flat Concerto was written beforethe “First”but is known as “No. 2”since itwas published later.Though clearly aproduct of the Classical era in itsconstruction and expression, it is easy toview Beethoven’s singular forcespermeating No. 2 in the face of what weknow lay ahead. The opening movementfollows a familiar classical narrative.Thesecond movement’s soloembellishments remind of Beethoven’smassive powers as an improviser.Therondo-finale bounds along energetically, with both a look back to Beethoven’sclassical forbears and the premonition ofa whole new story in creativity thatwould change music forever.

Symphony No. 4 (Italian)Felix Mendelssohnb. Hamburg / February 3, 1809d. Leipzig / November 4, 1847Composed: 1831-1833; revised 1834-1837First performance: May 13, 1833(London), conducted by the composerLast WSO performance: 2003; JaimeLaredo, conductor

Mendelssohn’s affluentfamily life prompted asmuch a desire fortravel as for music.Numerous lettersdescribe his journeys

across Europe, and ten trips to GreatBritain prompted music, notably histours of Scotland that resulted in the“Scottish”Symphony and the HebridesOverture.

At age 21 he undertook a major tour ofthe Continent. But it was Italy thatMendelssohn especially warmed to,andin 1831 he began a symphony based onhis impressions of Rome,Naples andother points of inspiration to him.

One thinks about effortless facility whilelistening to Mendelssohn, but that washardly the case with the composition ofhis “Italian”Symphony. Mendelssohnstruggled with its assembly, and acommission for a symphony from thePhilharmonic Society of London spurredMendelssohn to complete all themovements from his sketches.

The premiere was a great success andfurther cemented the special friendshipMendelssohn had with Queen Victoria.Still,Mendelssohn wasn’t satisfied withthe work and refused its publication.Only after his death was the scorepublished and made widely available, soon becoming one of the mostpopular orchestral works in theliterature and winning the praise ofaudiences and critics alike.

The opening movement is anexuberant sonata-allegro with astriking contrapuntal developmentsection. The Andante is a slow march, perhaps drawn from a religiousprocession Mendelssohn experiencedin Naples. The third movement is agentle minuet, leading to a dazzlingRoman saltarello finale.

PROGRAM NOTESby James Manishen

Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2Franz Lisztb. Raiding, (Doborján), Austria / October 22, 1811d. Bayreuth / July 31, 1886Composed for piano: circa 1850;orchestrated circa 1855Last WSO performance: 1983;Erich Kunzel, conductor

Though born in Hungary,Franz Liszt’s nativelanguage was Frenchand at age ten he wasliving in Vienna. Still, henever forgot his

homeland and incorporated nationalmelodies in his 19 HungarianRhapsodies plus other Hungarian-inspired pieces. Liszt felt himself astandard-bearer for Hungarian musicalnationalism, and indeed his workbecame early examples of the broaderfolk-based movement that soon layahead for other composers.

Liszt took the free-form name of“Rhapsody”to encompass the quickcontrasts and pliancy one feels in thestructures. Based on the alternatingslow “Lassu”and fast “Friss”componentsof the Hungarian Czardasalla, plus otherperformance devices of rubato, accelerando and characteristic harmonicshifts, the music contains atmosphericand entertaining displays, whetherbased on authentic material (“gypsy”asLiszt described) or not.

Liszt transcribed six of his Rhapsodies fororchestra and No. 2 is the most popular.

Piano Concerto No. 4Sergei Rachmaninoffb. Oneg, Russia / April 1, 1873d. Los Angeles, CA, USA / March 28, 1943Composed: 1926First performance: March 18, 1927(Philadelphia), conducted by LeopoldStokowski with the composer as soloistFirst WSO performance of original version

Rachmaninoff saw thewriting on the wall whenthe Russian Revolutionbegan in March 1917. Arecital tour of Scandinaviathat November gave a

way out of Moscow for the composerand his family, who had to leave behindtheir home, property and possessions. As a renowned pianist, Rachmaninoffhad entertained offers to come toAmerica and on November 1, 1918 hesailed from Oslo to New York, neveragain returning to his native land.

Rachmaninoff needed the incomefrom his coast-to-coast Americanconcert tours (that continueduninterrupted for the next 25 years) tosupport his family. This had impact onhis composing time. “I have toconcentrate on any one thing I amdoing to such a degree that it doesnot seem to allow me to take upanything else,”he told an interviewer.

Though it has been speculated thatRachmaninoff produced his FourthConcerto as an alternate performingvehicle to the constant demands forhis performances of the Second andThird Concertos, he said nothing aboutthe Fourth’s inspiration. As with theothers, the Fourth follows a similarlyeffusive Romantic path for which thecomposer made no apologies. “I havemade an intense effort to feel themusical manner of today, but it will notcome to me.”

The premiere of the Fourth Concertomet little success, with reviewscomplaining of loose-knit structureand new material appearing withoutthe “sanction of necessity”(SamuelChotzinoff). Rachmaninoff played thework for three years, dropping it fromhis repertoire in 1930 until itsextensive and better-received revisionof 1941.

The first movement’s sweeping maintheme and rhapsodic developmentsection emblazon the work’s darklyRomantic spirit, the piano role grandand wide-ranging.The entireintermezzo second movement stemsfrom its opening theme, an austeresetting closely resembling the nurserytune Three Blind Mice and with astormy centerpiece. The finale receivedthe most extensive revisions in 1941and is a dazzling virtuosic display withcrunching harmonies and sharp witset in a complex structure that bringsback themes from the openingmovement.Tonight’s performance isof the original version.

Symphony No. 5Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovskyb. Votkinsk, Russia / May 7, 1840d. St. Petersburg, Russia / November 6, 1893Composed: 1888First performance: November 17, 1888(St. Petersburg), conducted by the composerLast WSO performance: 2011, AlexanderMickelthwate, conductor

Tchaikovsky’s musicmasks an almost ongoinginsecurity in how heviewed his creative networth. In May of 1888, hehad gone three years

without writing anything. His spirits werelow and he feared his creative energywas becoming tapped out. Still, he wroteto his brother Modeste that he had tosnap out of his mental state andcompose something. Amazingly,Tchaikovsky completed a short score tothe Fifth Symphony within six weeks ofthat letter.

At the premiere in St. Petersburg, theaudience respectfully applauded thecomposer but Tchaikovsky felt thework a failure.Things changed at aperformance in Hamburg in 1889where the audience, performers, criticsand even Brahms, who attended, werenotably enthusiastic. The FifthSymphony never looked back afterthat, becoming a much-loved staple ofthe orchestral literature.

As with the Fourth Symphony,Tchaikovsky’s resignation to his fatebecomes the prevailing force in theFifth. But while the Fourth’s story is moreearthbound and combative, the Fifth’smessage elevates towards the spiritualwhere man’s journey is governed byforces above earth to better the soul. Asin Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony,Tchaikovsky’s Fifth is a journey fromstruggle to joyous resignation.

The Symphony opens with a Fatetheme in unison clarinets, a theme thatrecurs in each movement. The secondmovement’s memorable horn solo haswritten in the manuscript “Oh, how Ilove…if you love me.” It could be anoperatic love scene. The thirdmovement is a waltz, recallingTchaikovsky’s imperial status as acomposer of ballet. The finale beginswith a lengthy recall of the Fate themebut soon turns heroic, marching to theend with victory hard-won.

PROGRAM NOTESby James Manishen

Overture to OlympieJoseph Martin Krausb. Miltenberg am Main, Germany / June 20, 1756d. Stockholm, Sweden / December 15, 1792Composed: 1791

Known as “the SwedishMozart,”Joseph MartinKraus was a gifted andunusual composerwhose talent andtheatrical flair caused

Christoph Willibald von Gluck andJoseph Haydn to proclaim him anoriginal genius. A published authorduring his youth, in the 1770s at theUniversity of Göttingen, Kraus fell inwith a literary movement devoted tothe Sturm und Drang (storm andstress) school, a faction inspired bythe early Romantic works of Goethe.Kraus published stories representativeof this movement, later travelling toSweden in the hopes of breaking intothe musical court of Gustav III. Heeventually did, going on to composeand publish within the intellectualand cultural life of the Swedishcapital.

Kraus’s incidental music for JohanHenrik Kellgren’s tragedy Olympiecontains a powerful Sturm und Drangoverture that opens with the jaggedrhythms of French grandeur followedby a violent Allegro, ripe with wildostinato in the strings and dramaticoutbursts at every turn.

Piano Concerto No. 9 (Jeunehomme)Wolfgang Amadeus Mozartb. Salzburg / January 27, 1756d. Vienna / December 5, 1791Composed: January, 1777

After years of touringEuropean capitals with hisfather and sister, wowingaudiences as a childvirtuoso, Mozart returnedto his hometown of

Salzburg in 1773 to compose andperform as concertmaster to the Prince-

Archbishop. At the new adult age of21, he planned to look foremployment in Mannheim and Parisduring the summer of 1777 andwanted to significantly deepen hiscraft with a new work he wouldperform himself. The Piano ConcertoNo. 9 was to be his calling card.

The concerto became known as theJeunehomme, an ambiguousreference to the pianist VictoireJenamy (1749-1812) who inspiredthe work while in Salzburg duringthe winter of 1776-77. She was thedaughter of the famous balletmaster Noverre and must havebeen a formidable player. It becamethe first of Mozart’s piano concertosto appear in print, published in Parisaround 1780.

The Jeunehomme was to Mozart’spiano concertos what the Eroica wasto Beethoven’s symphonies, coincidentally sharing the same keyof E-flat major. That is, amonumental, groundbreakinghappening in its musical genre thatmarkedly changed what had comebefore, and generally regarded asthe first real masterpiece amongMozart’s 27 piano concertos.

The concerto opens with a shortorchestral fanfare immediatelyanswered by the piano – a bold andunprecedented stroke breakingwith accepted practice of everyconcerto written up to that time. The piano then steals away, allowingthe orchestra to build the expositionand then re-entering with a longanticipatory trill. For the first time inthe concerto medium, soloist andorchestra become equal partners ingenuine dialogue.

Nowhere is the connection betweenopera and concerto more evidentthan in the slow movement, marked“andantino,”which at the timeindicated a slower pace thanandante. Mozart uses a minor keyfor the first time in a piano concerto, lending a poignant dignity to itsexpression and even moments ofrecitative as solo and orchestra

weave the most intense emotionalspell, rising to a new pitch at thecadenza.

The remarkable finale, a loose rondo, kicks off with one of Mozart’s mostenergetic displays. A stately minuetarrives, with a theme and fourelaborate variations to change themood, texture and tempo. The maintempo returns, luxuriantly set witharpeggios in the piano over a richorchestral backing leading to anexuberant close.

Symphony No. 40Wolfgang Amadeus MozartComposed: 1788

In less than two months Mozartproduced the toweringmasterpieces of his orchestraloutput, Symphonies 39, 40 and 41.Though one cannot simplify thestriking wealth of resource in No. 40,it may be fair to say that in its key of G minor and the symphony’simpassioned moods and restlessintensity may very well be inresponse to the tragic conditionsMozart was living under at the time.

Mozart was 32 in the summer of1788, in declining health and withonly three years to live. His wife wasin failing health and they had justlost their six-month-old daughter. His opera Don Giovanni was not wellreceived in May, not much was onMozart’s plate performance-wiseand he was deeply in debt.Thosetwo summer months may be themost magical period of musicalcreation in the history of the art.

No. 40 is a work at the crossroads ofthe Classical and Romantic eras – aphenomenal happening that seemsto live in both worlds at the sametime. Here the orderly ways of theClassical period find themselvesamalgamated to a new and vividpower of self –expression, whichBeethoven was to take up and runwith. All that, coupled with a masterlytechnical skill produce a trulygripping experience in No. 40, nomatter how many times you hear it.

Cirque Mechanics

Cirque Mechanics was founded in 2004 by Boston nativeand German Wheel artist, Chris Lashua, after the successof his collaborative project with the Circus Center of SanFrancisco, Birdhouse Factory. Cirque Mechanics quicklyestablished itself as a premiere American circus, with itsunique approach to performance, inspiring storytellingand innovative mechanical staging. Spectacle Magazinehailed it as “the greatest contribution to the Americancircus since Cirque du Soleil.”

Cirque Mechanics, although inspired bymodern circus, finds its roots in themechanical and its heart in the stories ofAmerican ingenuity. The shows, rooted inrealism, display a raw quality, rarely foundin modern circus, that makes their messagetimeless and relevant. The stories arewrapped in circus acrobatics, mechanicalwonders and a bit of clowning around.
