July 29, 2018
Dear Friends,
As you know, Deacon John Baffa has retired and moved to North Carolina after many years of wonderful service to our parishes. We had been somewhat worried that with only Dcn. Mark and Dcn. Greg, we would be hard pressed in the ministry with so many people that it would be hard to get everything done.
But as God’s providence would have it, another deacon just happens to be moving to Brewster and will be joining our par-ish next week. He is Dcn. Addie Lekovick and he was ordained last year with Dcn. Greg. He is originally from Montenegro (not far from Dcn. Mark’s origins!), and actually is a convert from Islam. He has a wonderful wife Elsa and soon his sixth child will be born. He’ll assist at his first Mass at St. Lawrence at 11:00 August 5.
We’re delighted to have him and his family join our parish and we look forward to his spiritual service and leadership in our community.
The diaconate as an institution goes back to the New Testament but for many years was limited to a transition period be-fore a young man would be ordained a priest. But the original practice was revived in the Catholic Church after Vatican II in the 1960’s and proven to be one of the great blessings to the Church in our time.
Men who feel called to ordination as deacons undergo a rigorous five-year process of study not unlike that of priests. Deacons must work to support themselves and are not paid by the parish. They do not make a promise of celibacy if already married but cannot marry once ordained.
Their service to the Church is very much like it was in New Testament times when the apostles appointed deacons to serve at the altar, preach the Word of God, bring Communion to the sick, and assist in the management of the affairs of the Church. They can perform baptisms, funerals, and weddings but cannot celebrate Mass, hear Confessions, or anoint the sick. They make themselves available to the pastor in his pastoral initiatives and priorities and in service to the poor.
It’s hard to imagine what we would do without deacons today, and the renewal of the diaconate in the Church is a sure sign the Holy Spirit knows what we need and inspires men to serve in new and creative ways to bring the message of the Gospel to everyone.
Please join me in thanking our good deacons for their faithful, generous service to our parishes and let’s keep them all in our prayers every day.
God bless,
Fr. Richard Gill

like a fine wine Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
“Hear another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a tower. Then he leased it to tenants and went on a journey. When vintage time drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to obtain his produce.” —Matthew 21:33-34 Did you know there are over eight thousand wineries in North America? Not every winery has a vineyard, but that’s a lot of grapes on vines. Where I live in North Carolina, there are now over 120 wineries and/or vineyards through-out the state. With the decline of tobacco as a major cash crop, those fields have become fertile soil for planting grapes. It would seem the famed “Tobacco Road” might be more aptly named “Wine Way.” Everyone should tour a winery and vineyard at least once. Owners and workers enter into a relationship with the land that is 24/7 and 365 days a year, and it is inspiring to ob-serve. The hard work is worth it, especially when you can produce a fine wine that causes a wine drinker to smile
(and pay top dollar)! I just can’t imagine doing all that work. I am glad it is easier to enjoy wine by just buying it in a store. Being good stewards in the vineyard of the Lord isn’t that easy either. Much is entrusted to us to care for and cultivate. The expectation is that good fruit will be pro-duced. When the time comes that we are asked for the fruits of our labor, we can react negatively because we have not been the most productive of workers. What we sometimes forget is that, with the help of the One who owns the vineyard, we can produce more good fruit than we can imagine. I have seen the joy in the eyes of a winemaker who has created an award-winning bottle. Making good wine takes practice, commitment, and a love of the craft. Some barrels of wine produced are not good at all. Mis-takes are a part of the process. But perseverance can lead to a wine that is spectacular. Idea for response
Take the time God has given you to go ahead and com-plete that task that you have put off for a while. Thank God for the time to complete the job. Take time to reflect
What three areas in my life do I need God to help me with greater perseverance?

Jasmine Cuascut I would like to express my gratitude to all those who were involved with Vacation Bible School Shipwrecked Camp 2018 and making it a success. I feel very grateful to have been a part of such a wonderful experience. I was a vol-unteer and my two youngest children Evan (6 years old) and Nyah (9 years old) attended the camp. It was well organized, everyone was so welcoming and there were plenty of Counselors’ In Training (CIT) to help. The CIT children were very respectful; they were such a pleasure to have in my group and each station had extra helpers ready to help wherever needed. My children loved Vacation Bible School Camp. Each day was filled with a different message, instilling our faith in our children while having fun is brilliant. My children came home singing songs regularly. We all looked forward to the next day; we would try to guess which would be the next day’s character and message. We had an amazing experience, each day we started with going to church. Then we would go to the gym for songs and playing pass the message in the bottle. (That was one of my favorite parts of the day.) Seeing and hearing the songs brought peace to my heart and praying together was a blessing. Each day we rotated to the Imagination Station, Craft Sta-tion, Bible Study Station, and Shipwrecked Games (the children and CIT’s were asked to use team work). There was also water play. We watched videos of children speaking of a time in their lives when they felt that Jesus rescued them. We are looking forward to Vacation Bible School in 2019. I would definitely recommend this program to other fami-lies so that they too may experience the joy we were part of during this 2018 year!
shipwrecked with friends Victoria Kovaleski As school was coming to a close, my mind was on summer! I never would have guessed that I would be spending my first week of summer at one of the best camps I have ever been to. My mom signed me and my sister up for Vacation Bible School (VBS) and it was the Monday right after school let out! I wasn’t sure how it would be, but it was worth a try. As I just turned 13, I was signed up as a Counselor In Training (CIT). I was assigned a group, as well as a group leader when I arrived. Also, for the week, I had the pleasure of assisting Father Gill in the morning with all the campers along with a close friend of mine, Franceska Drejaj. This not only made me feel good as I was helping young children to learn about God but also was able to refresh a few things for myself. Early in the week, we all spent some time learning the Shipwrecked Vacation Bible School Songs. In the beginning campers and CIT’s were a little shy with the lyrics and the moves, but by the end of the week everyone had it down and had no problem showing it during the concert the last day. I know at least half of us were still singing the songs the week after! A day at VBS as a CIT consisted of going to various stations with an assigned group of campers. These stations included Shipwrecked Games, Bible Discovery, Imagination Station, Sports, Arts and Crafts, and Kid Vid Cinema. Organizing all these stations, groups and set up, could not have been an easy task, but Mrs. Santerre worked hard on it, and it really made all the difference in our day! During these stations our group not only learned valuable lessons, which connected to our theme of the day, but we also all got the chance to get to know each other and form friendships. I enjoyed seeing and working with my school friends during the week, an added bonus to vacation bible school, right after school ended. Whether that meant seeing them while at a station with my group or passing them on the way to lunch. We engaged in many fun competitions as campers and CIT’s arrived in the morning. These games were in the form of hot potato, a freeze dance competition, and even kickball everyday after lunch. To sum this up, VBS week was an amazing time and a wonderful experience. As a CIT, I was able to improve on my responsibility skills, VBS gave me a chance to serve our church, learn more about God, and laugh all at the same time! I am not joking when I say my hope for next year is I can be a CIT again, but in a NEW 2 week program!
shipwrecked continued...

Kim Santerre St Lawrence’s Family Program had a very successful and productive year. The Family Program served to catechize a total of 212 students and their families for the 2017-18 Religious Education year. Each month we covered different, but very specific topics relating to our faith.
The Religious Educa-tion year started off with an Orientation session in September followed by a Crea-tion themed BBQ at Wells Park in October. For November, we focused on learning
about Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy coupled with performing a community service project collecting charita-ble items for the United For The Troops organization. De-cember we celebrated the birth of Christ by participating in a live Nativity event where our families met Mary, Joseph and the Angel and learned all about the journey to-wards Christ’s birth. January was an opportunity for everyone to get
himself or herself into spiritual shape through learning about new and different ways to pray. February was fo-cused on Lent, fasting and almsgiving. In March, our families
participated in a live Stations of the Cross. Then, in April, each family made their own rosary beads and all of us prayed together on the handmade beads.
We also had several special events throughout the year. We had a couple of Family Movie nights where families gathered to watch a movie, enjoy pizza and popcorn and treats. We made Advent wreaths from real evergreen sprigs. We also got to wear our pajamas to mass and attend a special Christ-mas Story Time event where everyone cozied up on throw
pillows and listened to stories while they enjoyed hot chocolate and cookies. It was a beautiful year as all of us learned about our faith, but also
brought ourselves closer to Christ each and every month. I enjoyed working with the families. I am looking forward to this upcoming Religious Education yea. We will be learning our faith each month as a community and have even more opportunities to attend special events.

welcome our newest
staff member Carolyn Adams Database Administrator I have been parishioners of St. Lawrence O’Toole, and then Sacred Heart Church, since my husband Chris and I married and settled in Brewster in 1991. Our early days were spent at St. Lawrence O’Toole with our 3 sons, Charles, Joseph, and Anthony, all being baptized there. My boys attended Religious Education, served as Altar Servers, and received their sacraments at Sacred Heart. As someone who had the good example of parents who ac-tively engaged in our home parish, it was natural for me to also look for opportunities where my time and talent could be utilized. Over the years, I have served at Sacred Heart as: CCD teacher, Co-Director of Living Stations of the Cross, Eucharistic Minister, Lector, member of the Parish Council and a representative of Sacred Heart Parish Making All Things New initiative. Of these, two stand out. First, for 10+ years I co-directed the Living Stations of the Cross performed by the youth of the parish. As a founding member of The Brewster Theater Company, it was fulfilling to be able to marry my background in theater with connecting young people with Christ’s Passion and Death and in the process deepening my own faith. Second being a Religious Education teacher impelled me to explore my personal relationship with God to lead the students on their faith journey. When I was approached for the job of Database Administra-tor for both parishes, I immediately asked God for guidance. I was touched by the book Perfectly Yourself by Matthew Kelly and the message of ‘What is God’s mission for you?’ No doubt, my ‘day job’ in the Brewster Central School District Office of Special Education is fulfilling and has its rewards. But, I’ve learned throughout my life, with God’s grace, to embrace opportunities where my time and talent can be used to support God’s mission and allow me grow in my faith.
