Awards

At our June membership meeting, annual design and horticulture awards were announced. The winners of most awards and trophies are based on points accumulated during the year by members who exhibit at our flower shows. Each first, second, third, and honorable mention received has a point value from the schedule in the blue section of the SPGC’s membership book. There are also three very special trophies that are awarded by the Club’s Executive Committee to members for outstanding contributions to the club.

Design AwardsFirst and second prizes are awarded for the most points accumulated during the year in each of the SPGC’s four design classes.

Design Division First Place Second Place Master Dianna Dwyer Georgia NostrandAdvanced Diane Deegan Paul NadziejkoIntermediate Nolini Barretto Rusty RuthNovice Krystyna Vaughn Cindy Richardson

The Helen Galt Memorial Award is awarded to the first-place honoree in the Novice Design Division. Helen Galt was a designer who always encouraged newcomers to take up floral design. This year’s recipient is Krystyna Vaughan.

The Marguerite M. Foster Trophy is given to the member with the greatest number of blue ribbons, not points, in any design division. This year’s recipient received four blue ribbons over the past year and is awarded Dianna Dwyer.

The Design Sweepstakes Bowl is awarded as part of a standard flower show. Although SPGC did have a Standard Show this year with October’s Moonstruck, it did not have a Design Division. Therefore, the award goes to the winner of Best in Show in Design in a subsequent month from the previous year. The winner is for her Best in Show in November was Maureen Carson.

The requirements for advancement in Design Class are a cumulative minimum of three blue ribbons, except for Master where you also need a Best in Show. This year we have no members who will move up in Design Class.

Garden Tour

Following a wonderful and successful June Garden Tour, Nolini Barretto sent a note thanking Ulli Delmar for all her great efforts in organizing the event (please see below).

Mucho thanks to Ulli Delmar for a wonderful, relaxed, perfectly executed June Garden Tour! We had good weather and terrific turnout – 20 to 25 people in all. Not only did Ulli get the tour together but she made all the lunch!! The lady forgot what “Potluck” means! Her Salmon quinoa salad, Chicken Waldorf salad, Kale salad, hoovies, Blueberry cheesecake and Choc coconut brownies were superb! But Ulli, this is not on – you mustn't singlehandedly feed us all. You MUST let us truly potluck next time. Thank you SO very for all the time, effort and love you put into ensuring we all had a fabulous time! 😘😘

Thanks to Patti Watkins for opening up her gorgeous garden to us and hosting our picnic on her porch – what a view! To Ruth Maggio, who insists that the Garden tour would not be complete without brekker at her house – you are SO right! 😘😘

And thanks to the queen bees of our tour destinations, Erna Szekeres, Jo Benson, Georgia Nostrand and (non-member) Hillary Martin – such lovely gardens, so much fun to visit! You will see photographs in the next Newsletter, but till then, have fun in your gardens!

Love, Nolini

Our next scheduled civic planting work day will be on Tuesday, July 10th. Efforts will focus on tidying things up and the current schedule is:

Time Location8:30 - 9:30 AM Welcome Corners9:30 - 10:30 AM Katrina Mygatt10:30 - 11:00 AM Fairview Gardens11:00 - 11:30 AM Castle Garden

If you have not helped in the gardens due to physical limitations we understand. But if you are able and we haven’t seen you helping in the past year or more you are not fulfilling your civic responsibility to the SPGC. If you cannot work during scheduled times, please go weed on your own time and let Maureen know! The weeds are always there no matter the day or time and the gardens are open areas with access on weekends. We look forward to more participation.

Stamford Neighborhood Grant ProgramThe Stamford Neighborhood Grant work is moving forward. Janet McCabe is heading that initiative. We have met with SPA (as they received a grant for the Gateway Fence) and we are in the process of getting more estimates for the Welcome Garden fence as the current estimate is almost doubled.
