INTRODUCTIONShaastra Juniors, from Shaastra IIT Madras is the first ever completely online two day Tech fest specially aimed at spreading technical awareness among school students. A fun filled weekend filled with events, shows, lectures and workshops is sure to have each and every students yearning for more.

Shaastra Juniors will be conducted online so each and every student can participate from the comfort of their home. Shaastra Juniors will also have special trophies for the best school and excellent students.

With this edition, we introduce to you, the grand Shaastra Junior Championship, one of the bi�est tournaments in the country ever, is set to happen throughout the weekends of October. This championship, being one-of-its-kind, targets to applaud the brightest minds of India through its most distinctive contests. May the best school win!

Each school will compete against one another in order to win the Shaastra Juniors championship. The points will be awarded based on student participation and winnings and has been elaborated on our website.

Prizes for each event and the championship have been elaborated on pages 13 and 14.

INAUGURATIONShaastra Juniors will be inaugurated by one of the most eminent space scientists in the world who has led many international committees on space science and technology, honourable Dr Mylswamy Annadurai.

He is a Retd. ISRO Director and the current Vice President of the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science & Technology and the Chairman of Board of Governors, National Design and Research Forum. Being the man behind the successful execution of Chandrayaan-1 and Mangalyaan, Dr Annadurai has always inspired the young minds to create history. He has received over 100 awards, including the Padma Shri and several others from both the national and international scientific society.

EVENTSSPARK

Shaastra strongly believes in knowledge sharing and encouraging scientific temperament among students across the country. In pursuit of turning our beliefs into reality, Shaastra has been conducting quizzes and conferences for school students under the banner of Spark (formerly SJQ) for over 10 years.Shaastra Juniors brings to you, the largest national level quiz competition by Shaastra which carries a great legacy dated to a decade, the first ever online SPARK for all school students to quiz at the comfort of their homes. Spark is a national platform where students compete with each other across technical quizzes, case studies and presentations, and in the process improve themselves - all at no charge. Last year’s edition of the Spark Junior Quiz was conducted in 20 cities and saw a participation of more than 3000+ students across the nation. From introducing quizzing to students to organising a coveted nationwide inter school competition, Spark has been growing in multifolds since inception. With exponential growth of par ticipation and standard, Shaastra is back with yet another edition of SPARK, the first round of which is going to be conducted in ‘Shaastra Juniors’.

StructurePreliminary Round: 1. An online quiz to test the logical and lateral thinking skills of a student.2. Students from classes 8 to 12 can participate in teams of 2. 3. A total of 100 teams across India will qualify to the screening round.Screening Round:1. A problem statement will be provided to participants. Teams must come up with an innovative solution for the same. Further details will be conveyed later.

2. The top 20 shortlisted teams will be invited to participate in the Spark Nationals at Shaastra, IIT Madras.Spark Junior Conference (Nationals)*:1. Selected teams will be invited to IIT Madras on a sponsored two day trip.2. Finalists would participate in competitions, lectures and guided campus tours to ensure a holistic learning experience.3. Fur ther details regarding the competition will be provided later to the selected teams.*Subjected to changes.

Shaastra Art ChallengeShaastra represents the Spirit of Engineering and stands with bated breath to hear about dif ferent technological advancements in dif ferent fields. But not all of these advancements are brought to our notice. To change this culture and to become more aware of the progress that we've made till now, Shaastra organises the "Art of Technology" to encourage children to draw about technology and it 's inner workings. School children can submit entries on the theme: Technology behind the scenes and get exciting prizes!

JUNIOR MAKE-A-THON (JMT)Junior Make-a-thon (JMT) is a one-of-a-kind event under the Tech & Innovation Fair, Shaastra, which centres around the ideas, imagination, and innovation skills of high school students and allows them to learn practical skills and apply them to create new models and devices. One of the primary aims of JMT is to promote maker culture among school students, with quality mentorship and workshops. With the help of our par tners, including the IITM Research Park and IITM Incubation Cell, we encourage students to come up with solutions to problems persisting in dif ferent fields like agriculture, sustainability, healthcare, robotics, and home comfort.

The first round of JMT 2021 will comprise a variety of case studies, based on significant problems that are prevalent in the world including specific social and environmental issues. These questions are sure to pique your curiosity and are framed to bring out the best in you! So bring out the hidden innovator in you, give us your best solutions, and stand a chance to get shortlisted to the final round of JMT Shaastra, where you’d be given some cool problem statements to work on, under the guidance of professionals and create your own product/ method to solve them!

Shaastra Junior Chess TournamentShaastra presents the first ever Shaastra Junior Chess Tournament] (SJCT) - a successor to its annual flagship event - Shaastra RAPID FIDE rated Chess tournament which has successfully completed 4 full editions each of it being a huge success, witnessing a par ticipation of 500+ across the world including 30+ Grandmasters and IMs. SJCT aims to create an environment for enthusias-tic and bright young minds to compete amongst the best for the championship, and promote the wonderful game which enhances and tests the thinking and problem solving skills of the players.

Event Information:Mode of Conduction: Chess.comParticipants will need to provide their Chess.com usernames during registra-tion.

Day 1: Elimination Round - Estimated for a duration of 1-1.5 hours, par tici-pants will compete in an Arena Tournament format. The time control of the match will be around 2 minutes+1 second.

Day 2: Finale Round - The top 24 from the elimination round will proceed to battle it through to the championship. They will be divided into groups of 6 where the top members will qualify for the Semifinals, followed by the Finals. This is estimated to be 1-1.5 hours.

An Hour of CodeAn Hour of Code Event is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that any student can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. These coding activities typically lasting about an hour are developed so as to cater to the level of understanding of middle school students, generally in block based languages such as Scratch.

Virtual Tech ExhibitionA Vir tual Tech Exhibition of innovative techno-enter tainment projects using 3D animations to show the students the principle behind its working. It includes an animated video to explain the working of the projects and a 3D animation viewer capable of running simulations which allows the student to explore each project to its core. This event is designed to give students a perspective towards technolo-gy and science. It will be easy to understand for anyone and at the same time also expose the advanced technology used behind these projects.

Case Study CompetitionHave you ever wondered that if only you could use whatever you have learnt that you would understand it better? Schools have a reputation of having a bookish type learning rather than exposing you to real world problems and its solutions.This Case Study Competition asks you to exactly do that : find innovative, out-of-the-box solutions to real world problems. There are no right or wrong answers here, just inventive ones.

Web Development WorkshopThis workshops teaches the basics of WebDev and teaches you how to build your very own webpage. The Workshops deals with the basics of HTML, CSS and JavaScript. By the end of the workshop, the participant will be able to build their own webpage.

Creativity in GeometryDo you want to expand your geometrical imagination? Would you like to see how geometric theories play a role in daily life outside the classroom? We introduce verbal interactions, fun, and a positive attitude towards abstract concepts in Mathematics. The purpose of this workshop is to illustrate the use of Ar t to enhance creative thinking and understanding in Mathematics and Programming. This workshop aims to teach skills of visual thinking and ab-straction while inspiring observation, imagination, shape analysis, creativity, and logical thinking. Af ter the session, you will appreciate the importance of Maths and Programming from all walks of life.

BrainSqueezeDo you love putting your brain into overdrive mode while cracking arduous puzzles. Come and experience the bliss of solving mind-bending questions in Brain Squeeze. An entirely logical event which puts your reasoning and analy tical skills to the test with exceptionally tricky questions.

Qualify the prelims to battle it out with the brightest of minds in the finals.

Online Scavenger HuntAn Online Scavenger Hunt where participants must scrape the depths of the internet to find the answers. The question will be either to find cer tain tweets or to get a quote from a book, etc. In an online Scavenger Hunt, the participant must scrape the internet (such as find cer tain phrases in a book or title of a webpage or such) to find cer tain clues and go on to reach the final point

Fusion360 WorkshopThe Workshop explores the field of 3D Modelling it 's applications. It uses the application Fusion360 and star ts off by building small models to complicated ones.

Paper Plane WorkshopThe workshop teaches you how to build a complicated paper plane that has a long flight time and explains the aerodynamics behind it. It then shows how these simple concepts are used in major aircraf t and spaceships.

Python WorkshopA Workshop that explores Python and it 's various applications. The workshop deals with concepts such as Computer Vision and Reinforcement Learning.

Reverse CodingThink you're good at problem solving ? Well there are many ways to brag, let ’s see which one you pick. This event looks for the real star that stands up to the ability of creativity and logic to reverse engineer. So, get ready for the ultimate challenge of hardcore logic, preceded by a prelims to test your mettle.

Computational Thinking WorkshopIn the digital age, computational thinking (CT) is an essential skill for students and educators alike. This systematic approach to solving problems is at the foundation of not just computer science, but many other subject areas – and careers – as well. The workshop unpacks how CT can be integrated throughout subject areas and grade levels. Through this workshop, educators will increase their awareness of CT, experiment with CT-integrated activities for the subject areas and get ideas to incorporate CT into their curricula.

Sushil Jaiswal is a Delhi based magician who's widely renowned for his tricks. His unique and innovative approach combines technology and tradi-tional magic. Junior Nights: Dan Rhodes

A unique and an amazing enter tainer, Daniel Rhodes is a 16 year old ma-gician from Rochdale, England. He has performed on both Lit tle Big Shots USA with Steve Harvey & UK with Dawn French. His talent amazes the audience and his magic leaves them awestruck. He is not only an enter tainer but also an inspiration to the younger generation.

Shaastra, the annual technical festival of IIT Madras, is a completely student organized festival and acts as a didactic standpoint for the footfall of 50,000 visitors attending the event. Every year in the month of January the dice rolls to engage students in various engineering, science and tech competitions, summits, lectures, conferences, exhibitions and workshops. It is also the first event of its kind in the world to be ISO 9001:2015 cer tified for implementing a quality management system.
