NICE TO MEET YOU, WHAT DO YOU DO?NICE TO MEET YOU, WHAT DO YOU DO?NICE TO MEET YOU, WHAT DO YOU DO?NICE TO MEET YOU, WHAT DO YOU DO?

Asking someone about their occupation is among the first questions we exchange when we network, when we date, meet new acquaintances or neighbours. Our occupation is, naturally enough, what occupies much of our time. It gives us some sense of who someone is and how we might relate to them.

A reinforcing moment for me to pursue my occupation occurred during one of these exchanges several years ago. When he found out that I was in rabbinical school, he looked at me and told me that I am going to be doing holy work. He made it clear that his occupation was either not holy or, at least, much less holy than my aspirations were.

He told me what he did. I was confused and frustrated as to how he could possibly create a hierarchy of holiness to sort his work and my intended occupation into that hierarchy with so much confidence. It seems he understood the mind of God better than I. So I knew I had to continue my studies.

What if instead of telling him that I wanted to be a rabbi, I just shrugged my shoulders and told him that I do a bunch of random things? I announce page numbers, I survey huts to see if their specs are right, I help to bury the dead, I like to dance and sing, I busy myself with centuries old disputes and consult on legal minutiae. Whether a tea bag can be drained into a teacup on Saturdays, or whether meat stew can be consumed if it was placed in an oven that was recently used to bake lemon meringue cheesecake - these things make me feel so alive! If I said this, I can imagine that he might have been confused too.

At the conclusion of sefer Shemot, the Mishkan is completed. The culmination of the Mishkan’s construction, suggests Ramban in his introduction to the sefer, brings things to full circle. At the outset, our occupation as a nation was to serve Pharaoh. Now, our occupation is to serve God as He dwells among us. In Egypt, our labour was simply termed avodah. In constructing the Mishkan, our work transformed into melachah.

This leads us to an even broader literary correspondence. A sevenfold refrain in our parsha is that the Mishkan’s construction was done “as Hashem had instructed Moshe.” A prior sevenfold parallel in the Chumash is found all the way back in the first chapters of Bereshit: “and Hashem saw that it was good.” The work in our parsha concludes with the phrase ה ה את־המלאכ or “When Moshe ויכל משfinished the melachah…” (Shemot 30:43). This strengthens the literary correspondence with Bereshit, where the Hashem’s work of creation concludes with ה–ויכל א ר עש #הים ביום השביעי מלאכתו אש or “And God finished the melachah He had done on the seventh day...” (Bereshit 2:2).

Hashem busies Himself with work called melachah, the work of creation. We are instructed to engage in melachah too (Shemot 20:9). Whatever new occupation we may acquire, or remain in, we are always called on to partner with God in advancing creation. No matter how tedious, apparently insignificant, technical or trivial our work may appear to be, we can always challenge ourselves to calculate our work’s repercussions from God’s perspective. So the next time someone asks you, “What do you do?” you can confidently say that you and Hashem are in business together.
