COMPOSER FEATURE Described by National Public Radio's Sacred Classics as "part of the next generation of exciting composers," Andrew Bleckner (Born 1964) studied composition with George Crumb at the University of Pennsylvania, and received a Ph.D. in composition in 1995. With an eclectic approach to composition, his deeply moving music is inspired by sacred music from many world traditions. Bleckner's work in musical theater has won him recent acclaim. The Pigeon Boys, a musical about Pigeoneers in WWII, composed by Bleckner and with lyrics by Anne Berlin, premiered at the 2011 New York Music Theater Festival. The CBST Chorus is proud to present “The Silence,” Bleckner’s elegant and stirring setting of a text inspired by Psalm 132.

Mi shebeirach avoteinu, mi shebeirach imoteinu, hu y’vareich et kol hakahal hakadosh hazeh.

May the One who blessed our fathers, May the One who blessed our mothers, Bless us, too, this holy congregation.

The people gathered here today who make us what we are: Those who give funds for heat and light;

Those who give help to the stranger and poor; Your sons and your daughters, the families yet to be--

May you know the blessing of peace.

The Silence Text: Nan C. Merrill, inspired by Psalm 132

Follow the way of Love

With calm and faith-filled intent, And know that all is working toward healing and

wholeness. May the healing power of Love lift you from the

limitations of fear and ignorance. May the peace of the Spirit bless you,

and lead you on life’s journey. Be not afraid of the Silence,

For the in the Silence, Wisdom’s Voice is heard.

25th ANNIVERSARY: JOYCE ROSENZWEIG AND THE CBST COMMUNITY CHORUS

Joyce Rosenzweig is an internationally recognized pianist, conductor, master class presenter, lecturer, coach, arranger, and authority on Jewish art and synagogue music. She performs in concerts throughout the U.S., Europe, Canada, and Israel, and is a dedicated educator of cantors and synagogue musicians, having served on the faculty of HUC-JIR’s Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music for more than three decades, where she holds the title of Artist-in-Residence. She has been a faculty member at the Jewish Theological Seminary’s H.L. Miller Cantorial School since 2004, and has served as Music Director of Congregation Beit Simchat Torah in Manhattan since 1994, where she is the founder and conductor of the CBST Community Chorus, one of the most renowned synagogue choirs in the U.S. Joyce is thrilled to mark her 25th anniversary at CBST alongside CBST's 46th anniversary tonight, and feels extremely blessed to have been part of this remarkable, groundbreaking, and deeply inspiring community all these years.

This is the 25th anniversary of Joyce Rosenzweig's first service with Rabbi Kleinbaum at CBST. The participation of the chorus (comprised of Rafaela Anshel, Sariel Beckenstein, Zev Ben-Yehuda, Mark Bieber, Ron Citro, Janet Englund, Geoffrey Goldberg, Rachel Kaufman, Larry Kay, Ellie K., Ron Kohn, Michael Lehrman, Rosanne Leipzig, David Spegal, Diane Temkin, and Janet Zaleon – representatives of all the minyanim) was limited in 1994, when it participated in two services, then in High Holy Days in 1995, and only started using piano in 2000. Over the years as CBST's Music Director, Joyce developed our chorus into a core component of Shabbat and holiday observances. Rabbi Kleinbaum drew Joyce to CBST and that collaboration has drawn thousands to CBST.

PRAYER for OUR COUNTRY

Our God and God of our ancestors, bless this country and all who dwell within it.

Help us to experience the blessings of our lives and circumstances,

To be vigilant, compassionate, and brave. Strengthen us when we are afraid, Help us to channel our anger, So that it motivates us to action. Help us to feel our fear, So that we do not become numb. Help us to be generous with others, So that we raise each other up. Help us to be humble in our fear,

knowing that as vulnerable as we feel, there are those at greater risk, and that it is our holy work to stand with them.

Help us to taste the sweetness of liberty, To not take for granted the freedoms won

in generations past or in recent days. To heal and nourish our democracy,

that it may be like a tree planted by the water whose roots reach down to the stream; it need not fear drought when it comes, its leaves are always green (Jeremiah 17:8).

Source of all Life, Guide our leaders with righteousness, Strengthen their hearts,

but keep them from hardening. That they may use their influence and authority to

speak truth and act for justice (Isaiah 16:3-5). May all who dwell in this country

share in its bounty, enjoy its freedoms, and be protected by its laws.

May this nation use its power and wealth to be a voice for justice, peace, and equality for all who dwell on earth.

May we be strong and have courage To be bold in our action and deep in our compassion, To discern when we must listen and when we must act, To uproot bigotry, intolerance, misogyny, racism,

discrimination, and violence in all its forms, To celebrate the many faces of God reflected

in the wondrous diversity of humanity, To welcome the stranger and the immigrant

and to honor the gifts of those who seek refuge and possibility here, as they have since

Let justice well up like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream (Amos 5:24)

UPDATE ON CANTORIAL SEARCH CBST has formed a Cantorial Search Committee to consider all of our options going forward and to find the right person to become our Cantor as of July 1, 2019. Cantor Steve Zeidenberg's last day with us is June 30th. We are so sad to see him go, and wish him well on his next chapter.

The Committee is comprised of the following: Harold Levine, Sue Ingerman, Nora Isacoff, David Feinberg, Ira Rosenblum, Rabbi Yael Rapport, Music Director Joyce Rosenzweig, and Rabbi Sharon Kleinbaum. You are welcome to give your thoughts to any of the members of the committee. Please know that the committee members are bound by confidentiality and CANNOT discuss any names of applicants.

We have listed the position in various places: The Conservative Movement's Cantorial Placement Services, Jewish Jobs, and through personal networks. The Reform Movement will not allow us to use their placement service since CBST is not affiliated with the Reform Movement. CBST is an unaffiliated synagogue and therefore it is up to the different movements as to whether they will allow CBST to use their placement services.

If we don't find the right person for a full time position for this coming year, we might consider other options such as a part-time position or student intern position and re-open the search process next year.

This project responds to the moment in history in which we find ourselves. As a congregation, we will recite the entire book of 150 Psalms each day with each person taking on the responsibility of one Psalm. You can still join this initiative (non-members are welcome): Email Tasha Calhoun at [email protected] with Psalms/Tehillim Project in the subject line. You can choose a Psalm that is meaningful to you or ask CBST clergy to choose one for you.
