BY JaY BOBBIN a lot is riding on “Shadowhunters”: Not only does it turn a popular book franchise into a series, it also launches a new network.

Well, a somewhat new network. aBC Family becomes Freeform on the day the supernatural adventure premieres, Tuesday, Jan. 12. While shows including “Pretty Little Liars” (which starts a new season on that date) are being held over, others are being added in service of Freeform’s aim to appeal to “Becomers,” viewers who are experiencing “firsts” from their first kiss to the birth of their first child.

Inspired by Cassandra Clare’s “The Mortal Instruments” novels, “Shadowhunters” tackles that mission as Katherine McNamara (previously seen on aBC Family’s “The Fosters,” which also will continue on Freeform) stars as Clary Fray, who’s stunned to discover she belongs to a line of half-human, half-angels that hunt demons. She gets a personal reason to join that quest when her mother is kidnapped; Dominic Sherwood, alberto Rosende, Emeraude Toubia and Matthew Daddario play her comrades in battling the otherworldly.

a veteran of Broadway’s “a Little Night Music” (in which she performed with angela Lansbury and Bernadette Peters in different casts), the friendly and energetic McNamara allows the “Shadowhunters” casting room “was indeed” packed with young actresses who wanted to be Clary. “It’s a new interpretation of a story that so many people love and are attached to,” she says. “We have this opportunity to start fresh and take a new perspective on it, and really do our own thing with it, which is fantastic.”

The “Mortal Instruments” books also yielded a 2013 movie that starred Lily Collins as Clary, and “Shadowhunters” executive producer McG – the filmmaker who also has The CW’s “Supernatural” and NBC’s “The Mysteries of Laura”

on the air currently – says he’s “thrilled to be a part” of the Freeform repositioning “right at the ‘go’ moment. There’s something like 36 or 38 million copies of the books out there in the world that have sown the seeds of awareness, and hopefully, we can deliver on the television version of that.”

McG saw the film, subtitled “City of Bones,” before he became involved in the TV interpretation: “The movie did well, I just don’t know if it did quite well enough to warrant a sequel, so they decided to reappropriate it to television. Hour by hour, you can tell more story and dive more deeply into the subject matter, the North Star of that being ‘Game of Thrones.’ I don’t think that would be nearly as satisfying as a two- or three-hour movie as it is an hour at a time over a 10-hour season.” Ed Decter, co-writer of the movie “There’s Something about Mary,” also is a “Shadowhunters” executive producer.

The ample physical training required of the cast became “sort of a bonding experience for all of us,” McNamara reports. “We all had a personal trainer, then we also had gymnastics training so we could do a bunch of our own stunts. On top of that, there‘s a myriad of different weapons on the show ... swords, knives, whips and bows and arrows. We all kind of taught one another how to fight and spent a lot of time bruising each other, and I think it really benefits the show.”

McNamara sees also big benefits to “Shadowhunters” being such a major factor in aBC Family’s transition into Freeform. “We’re very fortunate to have that freedom, if you will, in doing a show of this nature,” she notes. “There is so much leeway we have with the fight sequences and the romance of the show and the different special effects. There are risks we can take because they’re doing the rebrand. While the show is trying to find its tone and its voice, so is the network, so they’ve helped to shape each other.”

Not only do you star in “Shades of Blue,” you’re also part of the team of executive producers on it. How is that helping you in making sure the show is done the way you want?They’re making sure that every line comes to life, and that every line is the right line. We’d be in my trailer, and we’d see that an episode had a real opportunity to be something super-profound about humanity. We’d be sitting there trying to find the one line, and not giving up until it was exactly what we thought it could be. Looking at all the promos now, it just shows you how every moment is important, and so is how everything looks.Producing is exciting for me in that way, because being an actor for so many years, I was just doing my part – literally – and having to stay in my lane. To be able to be part of the whole picture and take an idea from inception to the final edit is so exciting, and I’m really proud of it. I really feel this is about how people are good, but we get messy. The goodness in us is always trying to supersede the bad judgments we make sometimes.

You’re also an executive producer of “The Fosters,” which resumes on the newly renamed Freeform on Jan. 25. What is that series accomplishing for you in terms of the kind of programming you want to make?Talking about “Shades of Blue” as well, television can help in so many ways, and I really believe “The Fosters” does that. It pushes the envelope and educates people about what’s going on. It’s such a beautiful show.

Since you were rivals in time slot and comedic approach, was there a strong sense of competition with “Saturday Night Live” on the “MaDtv” set? It was certainly always there and ever-present, except that at a certain point, we realized we were losing the fight: “We’re not gonna win this, so in losing, let’s do the very best we can.” We just had different audiences.There was one time in Year 3 for a few months when we beat them in the ratings, and I thought I might be knighted. We felt so proud of ourselves, then it went back to the way it had been – but it was never like, “aw, man, they beat us again this week.” We just assumed they would. It wasn’t a driving force in our trying to do our work, by any means.

What were your family and friends’ initial reactions?... I had responses across the board. To be honest, I had people who were not supportive and did not think it was a good idea, to friends who were like, “Yeah, this makes sense; let’s go for it. Try something different. Let’s see what happens.” So it seems like I had the extreme of both responses, either people who really didn’t want me to do it or people who were really supportive and happy for me.

It seems this is just as viable an option as Internet dating.I think so, too. I think our dating society has become really open-minded in finding different forms and ways in finding love and it’s sort of the modern day. and I think some of the traditional things that have worked for other generations aren’t working for us and we’re trying to find new ways to find love.

I even had a couple of guys ask me out and I declined just because I thought, “Well, this is unfair to you because I don’t even have time to date you.” So I was just in a position at that point where I think I was intentionally putting all of my focus into my career. and then at some point, I realized I’m in a beautiful, romantic city; wouldn’t it be wonderful to spend this time with somebody else and enjoy life and have a family and have more to life than just a career?

What is your next project?

“My next project is we go back for another season of ‘Cake Wars.’ ... I have ‘Submerged,’ which is out on demand right now, and it’s an action thriller and it’s my first foray into an action (movie) and it’s really good. It’s about a limo that’s trapped under water and about the people stuck inside it. So it’s really, really intense and it’s really great. You can get it on demand and on amazon. and then ... I’m in a bunch of episodes of ‘awkward’ on MTV, which is coming out starting in January. So I come on and close out the season coming on to play Jenna’s new boss.”

It stands to reason that if you spend enough time around culinary people, you’re bound to pick up a few pointers.

That has certainly been the case for Jonathan Bennett, host of Food Network’s “Cake Wars,” which kicks off its second season Monday, Jan. 11. His two seasons alongside judges and pastry chefs Ron Ben-Israel and Waylynn Lucas, he says, have proven educational.

“I get to go every day and learn so much,” the 34-year-old actor says, “not just about cake but food and cooking in general because I’ve always been interested and wanted to be a better cook and get better at being able to cook at home. and just being around Waylynn and Ron and all these creative food people, you just learn a lot. You learn a lot about every aspect in the kitchen, just certain things that you probably wouldn’t pick up normally.”

In each of the 13 Season 2 episodes, four master bakers go head-to-head to see whose cake creation will be the star of a major event and earn them a $10,000 grand prize. Many of the installments have movie or TV themes, and in Monday’s opener, it’s “Star Wars,” appropriate enough given the recent release of “The Force awakens.”

“What bigger theme on earth is there than ‘Star Wars’?” Bennett says. “Nothing is bigger and I’m just so excited for ‘Star Wars’ to have come out and at the same time that we’re going to be sharing our ‘Star Wars’ episode, so they’re going to be on at the same time. So people can go see the movie in the theaters and then they can watch ‘Cake Wars’ on Jan. 11 and watch as our masterful cake makers turn ‘Star Wars,’ one of the biggest franchises of all time, into cake.”

as for whether that includes a creation in the shape of Darth Vader’s head, for instance, Bennett isn’t saying. But he will allow that, “there’s definitely a lot of interesting concepts with the ‘Star Wars’ theme. There’s definitely a light sabre fight in the middle of the show, so you’ll have to pay attention for that.”

Tim DeKay laughs as he remembers one of his early TV roles.

The year was 1996 and the 52-year-old Ithaca, N.Y., native and co-star of Fox’s “Second Chance,” which premieres Wednesday, Jan. 13, had just flown into Prague to film the Danielle Steele miniseries “The Ring.” Primarily a stage actor at that point, he was filming a funeral scene when he recalls feeling uncomfortable at the prospect of a crane shot.

“I still felt like I was a theater actor in that I didn’t know my way around the camera,” he explains. “That feeling was right. I didn’t know my way around the camera.”

“I’m standing there next to Michael York in a funeral scene,” he continues, “and I’m supposed to bend and whisper something to my son. ... I had to wait for the crane to come close to me and then I would whisper. and I remember thinking, ‘Oh, I have to tell them they chose the wrong guy. There’s no way I can do this. I am so nervous right now. How am I going to tell them they’ve got the wrong guy? Just put me on a plane. I wanna go back home. I wanna go home now.’

“Fortunately, the crane shot was fine and it was just all in my head,” he says with a laugh, “but I’ll never forget that feeling of thinking I’m going to let Michael York down.”

Starting this week, DeKay stars as Duval Pritchard, a man whose deceased father returns in the body of a younger man (Rob Kazinsky) to make amends for their poor relationship in the Fox action/drama.

“It does ask the same question that Mary Shelley asks,” DeKay says, “and that is ... while it’s exciting and wonderful to bring back life, is it really what nature intended? and if we do bring back life, nature has a way of saying, ‘are you sure this is what you want?’ ”

‘Colony’ steals l.a.’s freedom Josh Holloway and Sarah Wayne Callies star in the sci-fi drama series “Colony,” premiering Thursday on USA Network.

The takeover of an area or country has been not only an element of history, but also a factor in a lot of science fiction.

Those takes on the subject merge in “Colony,” a USa Network sci-fi drama series from executive producers Carlton Cuse (“Lost,” “The Strain”) and Ryan Condal (the new show’s creator) that premieres Thursday, Jan. 14. It unfolds in a Los angeles of the near future, where ex-FBI agent Will Bowman (played by fellow “Lost” alum Josh Holloway) mulls collaborating with those who have invaded, occupied and divided the city in order to get his son back. However, don’t discount Will and his wife Katie (Sarah Wayne Callies, “The Walking Dead”) from staging their own crusade to restore freedom once they’re on the inside.

“The mystery,” explains Cuse, “is this occupying force ... what do they want, what exactly are they doing here, how are they operating? They’ve installed this proxy government that’s running the colony, and that’s what the show’s really about.

“We wanted to make sure that we weren’t doing another show in the sort of aliens-versus-humans genre. It’s really about the experience of colonization. It’s a much closer metaphor to afghanistan, for instance, where we put someone (played by ‘House’ alum Peter Jacobson) in power, and then you have one group of people that is sort of in charge of another group of people, and the history of colonization is kind of the history of subjugation. It’s really what the focus of our show’s about.”

Paul Guilfoyle (“CSI: Crime Scene Investigation”), Kathy Baker, Carl Weathers – alias the “father” of the movies’ current “Creed” – amanda Righetti (“The Mentalist”) and ally Walker (“Profiler”) are among other well-known faces in the “Colony” cast. That presumed familiarity is an aspect of the project being unsettling, since what might be expected from them isn’t necessarily what transpires.

“In the tradition of working with Carlton Cuse, I don’t know anything that’s going on,” Holloway muses, “and it’s a wonderful discovery what’s on the other side of the wall. It’s separated into prison blocks, kind of, if you will ... Los angeles. and we don’t know if the world is separated in that way, either. all communications have been cut off. We don’t know if there’s a New York or anything right now. So everything is a discovery, I think.”

Callies notes that with “Colony’s” freedom fighters, “You’ve got all of these zealots who are trying to fight back and sort of ‘Vive la resistance,’ and they don’t know Thing One about really what they’re doing, so passion and zealotry can be as dangerous as an occupying force. and you’ve got all of these people in the occupation who are making incredibly cogent arguments about preserving human culture so that we can live in peace and all these things, just the way the Vichy government said, ‘We’re preserving Paris.’ and they did.”

With “Colony” being a fictional saga, Callies says, “What’s exciting is this element of the proxy stories that you get to tell ... the undercurrents that you’re allowed to explore with science fiction that would be a little too on the nose, and maybe would feel a little too much like CNN if you just put the story right out there.”

The word on the ‘Street’ this year is that things will be different. Much different.

as the 46th season of “Sesame Street” opens Saturday, Jan. 16, on HBO, its young viewers will notice many changes to the venerable, much-honored preschool series, among them an updated set, new preschool-relevant themes, new opening and closing songs, a new segment and a new cast member. This in addition to a duration shortened from an hour to 30 minutes.

as executive producer Carol-Lynn Parente explains, it’s all about keeping the show moving forward.

“When you’ve been a show that’s been on the air for 45 years,” she says, “the reason we’re still around and relevant is because we continue to evolve. and that cycle of evolution has actually gotten smaller and smaller where you kind of look to refresh every couple of years. and we really sat down at the end of Season 45 – sort of a landmark year being on the air for 45 years – and said, ‘OK, what is that next evolution?’ ”

Probably the most instantly noticeable change is the set. Research showed that what distinguishes “Sesame Street” from other shows is its urban setting but in recent years, the set had gotten more cartoonish to compete with animation. So an effort was made to inject more realism.

“We knocked down buildings and was able to put up flats that let us see the neighborhood behind the street,”

Parente says, “and that really did a lot to give you a sense of flow and let the set breathe and made it feel twice as big.”

a new segment “Smart Cookies,” in which Cookie Monster and an elite squadron of cookies try to foil a dastardly baker, was added, as was Nina, a new human character of Cuban descent.

“She’s really someone who has like a maker spirit,” Parente says. “She’s very innovative and really models for the kids out-of-the-box thinking.”

as usual, the Muppets – albeit fewer of them – will have a strong presence, as will celebrity guests. In past years, the show has had appearances by such a-listers as Oprah Winfrey, Tom Hanks, Robin Williams, Michael Jackson, Robert De Niro and Cher. This season, musicians Gwen Stefani, Sara Bareilles, Nick Jonas, Pharrell and Ne-Yo and actor alan Cumming are slated to come on the show.

“We’re in this enviable position of they come to us, so we’re very, very lucky,” Parente says. “Sometimes we do best when they’ve just had kids and it’s an experience they want to share with their kids because it’s something they’ve grown up on. But we really are lucky in that we have way more requests than we could ever shoot, so we wind up turning away a lot of people ... .”

Numerous celebrities will attend the Golden Globe awards again, but it’s a good bet Jamie Foxx will be the proudest parent in the room.

a past Globe winner (for “Ray”), the actor-comedian-singer will see his daughter Corinne on stage all night as this year’s Miss Golden Globe, an established performer’s offspring who’s selected to assist in literally handing out the honors. With renowned snark-master Ricky Gervais returning for his fourth stint as host, the 73rd annual ceremony airs Sunday, Jan. 10, on NBC from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. (“Today” staples including Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie will host a pre-show special.)

In succeeding such other Hollywood progeny as Rumer Willis (daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore), Sosie Bacon (whose parents are Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick) and Gia Mantegna (Joe’s daughter), Corinne Foxx already has participated in such related activities as last month’s announcement of the Golden Globe nominees.

“There were a lot of people in the room, a lot of media, so it was intimidating,” the charming University of Southern California senior admits of that occasion, “but luckily, I didn’t have to go on stage and say anything. I could just sit there.”

Not so on the night of the awards, since Foxx will be in front of the crowd for the better part of three hours. “The pressure is more about not falling and not dropping any of the awards,” muses the model and aspiring actress, “and

not tripping. My biggest concern is probably about finding the right pair of shoes so that I’m not stumbling across the stage.”

Even if that were to happen, Foxx’s dad likely would be delighted. “He’s super-proud of me in anything I do,” his daughter confirms. “I could change a tire on my car, and he’d be just overwhelmed, so this is a huge deal for him. He just goes on and on about it, in the best way possible. I think he might be even more excited than I am.”

a highlight of these Golden Globes is sure to be the presentation of the Cecil B. DeMille award for career achievement to Denzel Washington. any hijinks Gervais may be planning will take a backseat during that segment, but Foxx feels reasonably prepared for any mirth he might have up his sleeves.

“I’ve been to the Golden Globes, and they definitely make it more like a party than the kind of award show where you’re just sitting and watching. There’s a good energy in the room.” While the show was hosted by Tina Fey and amy Poehler the year Foxx attended it, she says, “I keep getting all these warnings like, ‘are you ready for what Ricky’s gonna do?’ My dad’s a comedian, so I can take the punches if they come.”

In the end, Foxx simply is pleased for her Golden Globes role that she hopes will be a significant entryway into the acting profession. “It’s an incredible honor,” she reflects. “a lot of people who have done it have gone on to have really successful careers, and I hope to follow in their footsteps.”

Talk to the actors on “Galavant” and one gets the idea that nobody can keep a straight face during shooting.

after all, with all the singing, dancing and Monty Pythonesque bits on aBC’s Sunday medieval comedy, it appears that laughter is the order of the day every day on set. Cast members Timothy Omundson, Vinnie Jones, Joshua Sasse and Mallory Jansen all echo those sentiments. and blooper reels on YouTube confirm it.

Jones, who plays Gareth, King Richard’s (Omundson) bodyguard and confidante, will cop to losing it a few times on camera.

“We had one last year,” the 50-year-old English actor and former footballer explains, “where we had to get the shot but the tide was going out, so we literally had the giggles. It was the last shot of the series but we spent an hour backing up and backing up and we kept going out to sea because we needed the sea right behind us. But we had the giggles so much we couldn’t do it. ... It was getting dark and the tide was going out, but it was hilarious. and then Chris Koch, the director, was shouting, ‘Come on, I need to get this shot.’ and it made us worse.”

But he’s not the biggest offender when it comes to breaking down. That honor, Jones says, goes to Sasse, aka Galavant. and when he does, he’ll try to pull others in with him.

“When you’re on camera,” Jones says, “you’ll feel the sword on the back of your neck or on the back of your thigh or something like that, where he’ll give you a little nudge while you’re on close-up on camera.”

“He breaks me all the time,” he continues. “Yeah, me and him get a funny thing going and Tim Omundson holds it together pretty well but he does crack up. But then Tim wants to get it done so he gets serious before anybody else. He’s the first one to say, ‘Oh, come on, guys.’ When he says, ‘Shut up,’ it makes us worse.”

and in the event anyone tries to get too serious, Jones indicates there is a mantra on set.

“If anybody sort of goes against grain,” he says, “we say, ‘We’re doing a comedy here.’ ”

When Patrick Kane isn’t putting the puck in the net, he’s usually feeding it to the player who is. The defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks’ right winger and the rest of the ‘Hawks visit the Montreal Canadiens Thursday, Jan. 14 on NBCSN in a game that features two of the NHL’s top teams.

The Canadiens, led by center Tomas Plekanec have been atop the Eastern Division’s atlantic Conference for much of the season. The Blackhawks meanwhile, who earlier this season rode a 26-game scoring streak courtesy of Kane, try to keep pace with the Dallas Stars in the Western Division’s Central Conference.

Thanks in part to the scoring streak Kane has been on a tear this season. at press time he was leading the NHL in points scored, including goals and was second in assists. It should be noted that Kane was the NHL’s leading scorer when he broke his collarbone last season. He eventually returned to score 11 goals and have 12 assists in the playoffs, many of them key scores.

It hasn’t been all roses for Kane this season, however, as he was at the center of a sexual assault investigation that began in the off season and carried on until early November when the case against him was dropped. Kane was well into the scoring streak at that time and Blackhawks fans are hoping that’s all behind him, that he can stay healthy and not only win another Stanley Cup, but likely contend for the MVP trophy as well.

RON HOWARD

One of the most impressive things about Ron Howard as a filmmaker is how many different genres and themes he’s tackled ... from “Splash,” “Cocoon” and “apollo 13” to “a Beautiful Mind,” “The Da Vinci Code” and “Frost/Nixon.”

Now he takes on the ocean in “In the Heart of the Sea,” the true, “Moby Dick”-inspiring story of the Essex, an early 19th-century ship whose crew struggled to survive in smaller boats after a huge whale destroyed their vessel. That scene of destruction clearly is the high point of the film, which becomes a grim and grueling affair afterward.

Of course, that’s the point. Portrayed by Ben Whishaw, alias “Q” in the current iteration of the James Bond movies, author Herman Melville wants to know every detail of what happened out there. One of those who lived to tell the tale does that in a prolonged flashback; he’s played now by Brendan Gleeson and then by cinema’s next Spider-Man, Tom Holland.

It’s the same device director John Huston used in “The Man Who Would Be King,” in which it frankly worked better as Rudyard Kipling (Christopher Plummer) listened to adventurer Peachy Carnehan (Michael Caine) recount exploits. as a framing ploy here, it’s OK, though it seems largely a means of drawing more-direct lineage between “Moby Dick” and this story.

Chris Hemsworth, who also worked for Howard in “Rush,” plays one of the most skilled of the sailors ... but as the story underscores, skill goes only so far when nature works its own wiles. So does the notion of cannibalism in a PG-13-rated movie, since the picture is able to take that only to a certain extent, when it obviously was a critical element of the actual happenings.

The application of 3-D may be an attraction for those who want their sea-crisis-saga thrills amped up. For sure, the critical moment of the whale attacking the ship is just made for viewing through that sensory-enhancing process. Once that’s over, though, so is the real need for the 3-D: Men sitting and verbally pondering their fate isn’t something that really demands added visual dimensions.

Based on a book by Nathaniel Philbrick, “In the Heart of the Sea” is made very capably – Ron Howard never delivers less – but it doesn’t really take viewers anywhere they haven’t been before at the movies. In the end, it’s not that compelling a reason to leave dry land.
