    Preparation for TOEIC (Full Time)(CRICOS 051820G)

    The TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) test is a testof international English. TOEIC is the most widely used General BusinessEnglish language exam in the world. The test comprises of two sectionsand measures the listening and reading skills of people working in aninternational business or workplace environment. The ten-week intensive

    TOEIC course will prepare students to speci cally develop the test-takingtactics and strategies as well as the essential language skills that will equipstudents to achieve the score they desire for the TOEIC test. Studentswill be taught how to identify distractors and how to focus on avoidingthem; how to improve prediction skills; using context cues; skimmingand scanning. Students will also be able to improve their overall readingand general comprehension skills. The redesigned TOEIC test has 200questions.

    Preparation for TOEFL (Full Time) (CRICOS 051819A)

    Shafston provides full-time, 10 week TOEFL (Test of English as a ForeignLanguage) exam preparation for students at Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate and Advanced levels of English. The TOEFL test is acceptedas an admission requirement by universities and colleges in Canada and theUSA. It is also accepted for university admission in Australia and the UnitedKingdom. The course prepares students in TOEFL test taking skills for:Reading, Listening, Grammar and Writing.

    The TOEFL test has three sections:

    Listening Comprehension;

    Structure and Written Expression; and

    Reading Comprehension.

    The Listening Comprehension section tests the students ability tounderstand English as it is spoken in the USA and Canada. The Structureand Written Expression section tests the students ability to recognisestandard written English. The Reading Comprehension section tests thestudents ability to understand passages on non-technical subjects. Anintegral part of the TOEFL course is teaching students the key testingpoints. Students are taught key test-taking strategies, and how to improvetest performance under time limits. Students are taught strategies whichenable them to take the real test and succeed. Students are taughtstrategies for the computer-based test. In addition to teaching the speci ctest strategies for the TOEFL test, the course highlights the importanceof learning and understanding new items of vocabulary. Another key andessential part of the program focuses on improving listening skills sostudents are prepared for the listening section of the test

    The Business English Certi cate (BEC) preparation courses preparestudents in BEC test taking strategies through the four skills of Reading,

    Writing, Listening and Speaking. A comprehensive range of themes areexplored: Buying and selling, Company structures, Products and services,Using the telephone, Business issues and Travel.     Work Placement As an important part of the training in the Hospitality programs, Shafstonoffers students an opportunity to do industry work placement. The ShafstonCollege Work Placement program is designed to assist the hospitalitystudents in making contacts and gaining work within the industry. Inaddition, the work placement program supports the students in achievingthe industry occasions necessary to achieve academic success in theirstudies. The rst interaction with the students includes an informativepresentation upon commencement of studies. Within the induction processthe students are advised of the service and the impact of such a service ontheir study pathway.     Commercial Cookery

    The most common way to become a trade-quali ed chef in Australia isthrough the completion of an Australian Quali cation Framework (AQF)

    Certi cate III in Hospitality (Commercial Cookery). The normal careerprogression for a cook/chef, once quali ed, is to begin working as aCommis Chef, and then with experience, ultimately work towards becomingan Executive Chef.

    Shafstons program is customised to enable students to have access to aclear study pathway that takes them from completion of the Certi cate IIItrade quali cation into a Diploma of Hospitality. The Diploma of Hospitalityis delivered over seven terms in 92 weeks. Graduates of this packagedDiploma will hold both a Certi cate III in Hospitality (Commercial Cookery)and a Diploma of Hospitality. There is also an option to complete theCerti cate III in Hospitality (Commercial Cookery) as a stand alonequali cation in 55 weeks.

    The program allows students to develop the knowledge and skills neededto work as a chef in a commercial kitchen, and the knowledge and skills

    required for kitchen management and for general hospitality operationalmanagement. Part of the training is delivered in LAcadmie Hotel, a realservice training restaurant owned and operated by the College.     Other information

    Tools, Uni orm & Learning MaterialsShafston students enrolled into Hospitality Management, Cookery andPatisserie programs are required to purchase the necessary equipment andlearning materials so as to be able to complete their course. Tools-of-the-trade for a Chef involves having the appropriate clothing and possessingan adequate knife kit. Shafston has agreements with suppliers who providewhat is necessary to students at discounted prices. Total expenditure forthese items as well as all the necessary learning materials is approximately

    AUD$750. This would include the purchase of the uniform, chefs shoes,knife kit, text books and other learning materials.

    Meat/Sea oodStudents are required to handle and prepare food using meat and seafood.However, students are not expected to consume the food made usingmeat or seafood. This is true in both the Cookery and Patisserie streams,although for Patisserie the handling and preparation of non-vegetarianproducts is signi cantly reduced.

    Dress CodeStudents should follow their trainers directions regarding dress/jewelleryduring practical classes. In the kitchens students must purchase and wearprotective clothing including a cooks uniform and acceptable footwear.

    Timetable The classes may be scheduled on any day of the week between Mondayand Sunday over a maximum of 5 days/week. The lectures may bescheduled anytime between 7:00am and 9:00pm and the practical classesmay be scheduled anytime between 7:00am and 10:00pm in three shifts,namely, morning, afternoon and evening.

    The students are able to select from a variety of timetables based on arst come, rst served basis. The classes are typically lled during the

    orientation / re-registration day. Every effort will be made to accommodatespecial circumstances (such as a disability) of individual students. However,it is encouraged for this to be conveyed to the Operations Manager well inadvance.

    Academic support Academic mentors are available on campus. Mentors offer one-on-oneadvice and provide skill building exercises in a range of areas, including:planning and researching written work; researching requirements andtools; strategies for editing work; referencing skills; time management; oralpresentation skills and examination strategies. Through this service studentscan target concerns early and avoid losing marks due to lack of knowledgeof the requirements of academic assessment.

    Personal counselling and disability supportservicesPersonal Counselling assists students who are experiencing a rangeof concerns, including: study stress and anxiety; feelings of beingoverwhelmed by a new environment and expectations; and personal crisesimpacting on study. The service provides a safe place for students to meetcon dentially with a highly quali ed counsellor who can listen and helpgenerate solutions. Counselling and Disability Support Services can meetwith a student identifying with a disability and make recommendationsfor special consideration or study arrangements, including: rest breaks;extra time; separate exam venues or readers and scribes in examinations;assignment extensions; hard copies of lecture notes prior to class; approvalto tape lectures; and requests for extra tutoring support.

    Overseas student Health Cover (OSHC)

    All persons entering Australia with a student visa are required by law tohave health cover. Applicants normally pay for OSHC as part of their initialpayment to study at Shafston. At the time a new student arrives at theCollege, payment is then sent by the College on behalf of that studentto the Colleges preferred health insurance provider. After some time amembership card is produced which the student will receive in the mail.Students are covered from the day they start their courses despite the factthat at that time they would not be in possession of their membership cards.If a student has health problems which require attention prior to receivinghis/her card, he/she can be con dent to get treatment and pay for it. In thiscase a student will need to remember to request a receipt. The health careinsurer will reimburse the entitlement upon being presented with a copy of the receipt.

    Student support staShafston employs a team of multi-lingual student support staff who areavailable to counsel students in their rst language in relation to any issuesthey may be experiencing. Common problems faced by students include:homesickness, struggling to adapt to local culture, not understandingthe public transport system, nding it hard to nd suitable employmentor accommodation, or the student may have concerns regarding theirprogram of study. These experienced support staff have a good insightinto common areas of concern and are ready to supply the necessaryadvice and recommendations. They are involved in student orientationsand have regular interaction with students. So from day one at the Collegenew starters are able to identify who are the best people to approachfor help and guidance. Shafston currently employs full-time support staff who speak the following languages: Hindi; Punjabi; Gujarati; Portuguese;Spanish; Italian; French; Hungarian; Russian; Japanese; Korean; Mandarin;

    Indonesian and Bahasa Malay.

    OrientationShafston holds an orientation program for all students prior to start of anyprogram of study. Orientation is mandatory as critical information is providedwhich will helps new starters quickly adapt to their new schedule. Studentsgetting the most from their orientation ensure they do not fall behind fromthe beginning and are well positioned to get maximum bene t from theirstudies.

    Re undsEnglish (ELICOS) Programs

    Noti cation of cancellation or withdrawal from individual units ora program must be made in writing to Shafston prior to the startof the program. Application and Accommodation Placement feesare not refundable. Cancellation in writing at least 4 weeks beforethe students original program start date attracts a full refund of tuition fees and fees paid for materials. Cancellation in writing lessthan 4 weeks before the students original program start date butprior to the start date attracts a refund. Except as in 2 above andless $350 cancellation fee. Cancellation after a students originalprogram start date will not attract a refund

    Hospitality ProgramsNoti cation of withdrawal from individual units or a programmust be made in writing to Shafston before a students arrival in

    Australia (on a visa granted to study at Shafston). Application feesare non-refundable. If a student noti es us of his/her intentionto withdraw from individual units or a program before his/herarrival in Australia (on a visa granted to study at Shafston) thenthe student will be eligible to receive a refund of tuition paidminus a $350 administration charge. No refunds will be given fornoti cation of withdrawal which occurs after a students arrival in

    Australia (on a visa granted to study at Shafston). Complete termsand conditions of enrolment and a full refund policy is provided onpage 40 of this booklet.

    Enrolling at Sha ston1. Remove and complete the application form at the back of

    this booklet.

    2. Attach certi ed copies of all academic documents submitted tosupport the application including English language test results.Certi ed translations are required for transcripts or test resultsthat are not in English. Copies can be certi ed by: an authorisedShafston representative, an Australian Diplomatic Mission or

    Australian Education Centre, or any other person authorised with theauthority to certify documents in the country of origin.

    3. Forward the signed application form and supporting documentationto Shafston or a Shafston authorised representative.

    4. For successful applications, an offer letter and invoice for feespayable will be issued within 24 hours of Shafstons receipt of theapplication for enrolment in the Shafston program.

    5. To accept the offer of a place the student must pay the amount of the initial invoice and must send proof of payment to the Shafstonenrolments of ce. Appropriate methods of making payment aredetailed in the invoice.

    6. Shafston agrees to issue the necessary Con rmation of Enrolment(COE) form to students once receipt of the initial payment iscon rmed.

    7. When all COEs have been received, the student may submit anapplication for a student visa at the nearest Australian Embassy,Consulate or DIMIA Of ce (Department of Immigration). See www.immi.gov.au for detailed information about the process of applyingfor a student visa to study in Australia.

    NB . Students enrolling into a University pathway program as part of thesame application process will at stage 1, also need to completeand return the appropriate University application form. Followingthe issue of an offer letter from the University, in some cases aninitial payment to the University will be required, to receive thenecessary Con rmation of Enrolment (COE) from the University.
