DESCRIPTION
For the past 20 years, our industry has strived to mimic the biological to capture the life and organic forms of nature. I am excited to begin my career in a time that involves a paradigm shift in the industry from biological to geological. The shift consists of a responsibility for objectivity and a restoration of order within the chaos of our new metropolitan cities. My personal design approach embraces context, civility, history and democracy. Throughout my education, I have taken the opportunity to explore new possibilities to spatial and functional resolutions that would re-imagine a better way for people to live within the built environment.TRANSCRIPT

NEOCLASSICAL RESIDENCE
The initial concept was inspired by the Pathenon cathedral in Rome. The front columns provide balance and strength to the overall design. The classical approach to the design was routed from the clients respect for the Renaissance period and classical orders of Michelangelo.
UNIONVILLE MAIN ST. GALLERY The intentions of this proposal was to fit into the historical neighborhood on Main St. in Markham. The contemporary art gallery would also house 3 artists in residence with a separate entrance and roof top patio.

The goal of the campus was to create a new facility for members and community visitors to experience canoeing and kayaking at the humber river. The land was historically used by native Aboriginals as a resting site along their journey. The aboriginal long house typology was the guiding inspiration for the form and material selection

SECTION PERSPECTIVE
The challenge of re-designing the front entrance of the Ryerson Architecture School was to propel the school into the 21st century while expressing the values and creativity of the University. The glass curtain wall form symbolizes the commitment to design excellence and innovation of the program.
One critical issue that was addressed within the design was to make the entrance fully accessible with a series of scissoring ramps. The journey into the building creates a gradual transition into the atrium space. The compressed feeling when entering the building emphasizes the large 3 story lobby atrium.

RETRACTABLE THEATREThe focus of this academic project was to create a temporary pavilion for 1-2 years to promote the Ryerson documentary media masters program. The site given was on the last vacant property surrounding Dundas square. The challenge was how to create a student theatre that would show documentary screenings ranging in audiences of 10-70 people. The retractable qualities of the theatre give flexibility to the size and intimacy of the screening and creates a dynamic facade along Dundas square.

DUNDAS STREET PERSPECTIVE
The building was designed as Ryerson’s graduate residence for documentary media. It promotes a shift in architecture ideology. For the past 20 years, architecture has strived to mimic biological elements to capture the organic forms of nature. This design shows a shift from biological to geological expression. The shift consists of a responsibility for objectivity and a restoration of order within the chaos of our new metropolitan city. Dundas square is not unique because of its signs; it’s unique because of its void. The city lives through its public spaces and the void within the urban fabric activates the imagination of our growing metropolis.

RYERSONGRADUATE RESIDENCEThere is no better opportunity in Toronto to contrast chaos with architecture than Dundas square. The site given completes the enclosure of Dundas square and provides an opportunity to add a strong presence for Ryerson University. The dramatic concept says no to extruded floor plates and no to maximum building area. The concept also says no to tabla rasta by restoring the existing building and providing 3 stories of public space that follow the same height as the existing structure. The role of this building is not to compete with Dundas square: it’s to complete it.

B4WINTER 2013
The concept that has come out this process has been the contrast between the truth of documentary media and the lies of commercial interests which is Dundas square. I wanted to use the metaphor of exposure to reflect the architectural expression of this design. Dundas square is unlike any place in Canada and has drawn people to it from all over the world. It has helped Toronto become an internationally recognized city and a place where one can live, work, and play.

RYERSONGRADUATE RESIDENCEThe proposal elevated the residential section to the east side of the site and exposed an opportunity for a resident patio that would over look Dundas square. To address the large surface area on the west façade, I implemented a retractable metal perforated louvers system that gives residence the flexibility to adjust to sun exposure, temperature and privacy. The retractable nature of the louvers is similar to that of theatre curtains and creates a dynamic façade feature appropriate for Dundas square.

CHURCH ST. REVITALIZED
The strategy for connecting the Mattamy athletic centre to the Ryerson campus was to revitalize church street by connecting the greenery of the Church & Wellseley Village to the Kerr Hall Quad centre field. The revitalization of church street symbolizes Ryerson’s growth as a city builder with a commitment to improving student campus atmosphere within an urban context.

For the Evergreen Brickworks Children Greenhouse, the client wanted kids to play with their food. The flower-like water collection system allows for water to travel through a glass tube structure for kids to watch feed the aquaponics.

DUBLIN BIAThe design Charrette for Dublin City Council involved rethinking city systems. The area of focus was lower Camden Dublin which was in need of new ideas to regain local customers and improve business relations between the neighborhood. The city system developed to help business improve was a community loyalty program that rewarded people for shopping in the area. The cycle of consumption would reactivate the community and its local business owners.

DISTILLERYThe art piece of the distillery district in Toronto was a study of the structural brick construction of the historical community and its preservation in modern times. The strength of this community is directly related to the connection between the buildings and the public spaces that allow people to relax, rest and reflect. Jane Jacobs believed that the strength of the city was its sidewalks as the ultimate public space where interaction between all sectors of life can come together.

FIREPLACEThe process of designing a custom fireplace for a client begins with a meeting with a client and then a site visit to understand the opportunities of the space. The budget and vision of the client are incorporated into the initial sketch and then finalized after an approval of the technical CAD detail drawings. Manufacturing includes creating custom molds with the help of CNC machinery and laser cut operations.

WALL UNITThe basement wall unit was designed to span end to end with shelving on either side for books, movies and entertainment equipment. The client requested to have a modern esthetic that included a TV and fireplace. The stone was chosen to bring warmth and a sense of comfort to the space for entertaining guests or private occasions.

KITCHEN RENOThe basement kitchen was designed and built to create a welcoming space for large parties as well as casual family gatherings. The alternating pattern of stone and wood on the bar was designed to tie into the rest of the basement materials used throughout. The project completed was slightly altered from the initial schematic design due to cost and time constraints.
WINE LAMP
The wine lamp is light, bright and portable to any room in the house. The rotating pedals give off a soft ambient light great for reading or entertaining friends. The wine lamp showcases the innovative technology of catalyst 3D printing and prototyping. The tops of lamp are interchangeable to fit the clients function or appeal. The lamp is in cost estimates and awaiting for CSA light safety approval.

STAIR RENOThe client requested a modern staircase that would be a focal point for guests when being entertained in the basement. The design combined modern elements of acyclic 1” hollow tubes and led rope lighting to enhance the horizontal expression of the wrap around treads. The slope of the stairs was also reduced to create an easier procession into the basement while maintaining a safe and appropriate head clearance.
