Returning to our Roots - Announcing our New LogoWe are excited to share with you two major changes coming to Shalom Park. The first change which you may have already noticed is a return to our original name - Shalom Park. In 2010 we adopted the name Shalom Cares as an umbrella for our expanding organization and services. But our roots have always been on the Shalom Park Campus and we are still known in the larger community as Shalom Park. We are currently in the process of “officially” returning to the Shalom Park moniker.

The second change comes about due to our name change - we’re revising our logo. You will soon start to see our new logo (pictured right) appearing around campus and in our printed materials. Shalom Park will be returning to our roots in more ways than just our name, we have refocused our attention on the Nursing Home, Senior Residents and Wellness Center, where we continue striving to provide superior personalized attention, services and care.

The Shalom Park Board of Trustees is pleased to welcome three new members: Dr. Elisa Robyn, Sam Zaitz, and Vern Engbar!

Dr. Elisa Robyn is the Regis University Academic Dean, College of Contemporary Liberal Studies. Elisa’s community involvement includes serving as a Board Member of ADL, Congregation Beth Evergreen and she is a top-10 fundraiser for Multiple Sclerosis.

Elisa states, “My mother spent her last years at Shalom Park, first in the cottages, then in assisted living, and finally in skilled nursing care. Through all of her time there, the entire staff provided support, kindness and guidance to both my mother and me. Shalom Park lives up to the Jewish Mitzvah of “honor thy parents” in a profound way. I feel honored to be part of a board that lives up to the challenges of continuing this mission.”

Sam Zaitz is a Senior Broker of Legend Partners and has been recognized by the Denver Business Journal as one of the “Top 10 Retail Brokers”. Sam co-chaired the Shalom Cares Annual Event in

2014 and 2016 and has been involved with the JFS luncheon.

Sam is the grandson-in-law of Jordon Perlmutter and his grandmother, Blanche Zaitz, lives in the nursing home.

Sam says he “feels very fortunate to be a member of the Shalom Park board. I want to do everything I possibly can to make sure Jordan Perlmutter’s vision for how people should be treated at the end of their lives continues.”

Vern Engbar is the Operations Manager of Olympic Metals. Vern co-chaired the 2013 Shalom Cares Annual Event and his community involvement includes BMH-BJ Board of Directors and Make-A-Wish grantor and Volunteer of the Year finalist.

When asked what joining the Shalom Park Board means to him he replied, “I am excited to become a board member of the Shalom Park family. I know that it is a very interesting and exciting group. I am looking forward to working with the board and bringing a design solution approach to the group.”

Shalom Park is a Music & Memory Certified Care Organization

Music enriches the memories of our lives. For many who suffer from Alzheimer’s or dementia, music can connect people to family, friends and the world around them. Shalom Park is a Music and Memory Certified Care

Organization, bringing personalized music resulting in comfort and joy to residents. Personalized music helps seniors find renewed meaning and connection in their lives.

This past March, both staff and volunteers participated in three 90-minute webinars in order to properly launch the program. The results have been nothing short of amazing!

Shalom Park now has iPods with individualized playlists for many residents. Residents and family members suggest music which will be appealing and stimulating. One of our success stores is that of a Russian gentleman who rarely spoke. Once the headphones were placed on his head, with Russian music personalized for him, he sat up straight and started singing along in Russian to the music on his playlist. His face showed pure delight. This is just one example of many experiences our residents have had with this new program.

Shalom Park is very thankful to the donors who enabled us to launch this program. Shalom Park is excited to work with families of residents to continue creating personalized playlists so that each resident has the opportunity to enjoy such special moments.

Tai Chi with Stan CooperI have been teaching Tai Chi since 2002 and have loved it! When I started teaching for Shalom, we practiced in the synagogue. It was a very humbling experience, and I was able to learn a lot about the Jewish culture.

The participants that I have worked with over the years have been a wonderful group. The classes are very social, but they still adhere to the moving meditation and physical relaxation that is needed in order to practice the art.

Tai Chi can be traced back over 700 years. Tai Chi helps the practitioner with balance, stability, strength, and mental balance. It is gaining in popularity because it can be done by people of all ages. It incorporates slow steady movements. I have watched individuals who thought they could never do Tai Chi learn and enjoy it.

If you’d like to join Stan in a Tai Chi class - he teaches at Shalom Park on Mon/Wed 9-10am.

Letter from the President/CEO - Nursing Home ImprovementsAs I stroll around our scenic campus, I am thrilled to see the ongoing improvements. In addition to replacing the original roof on the Nursing Home, we’ve recently installed new carpeting and new blinds in our Nursing Home neighborhoods. This past June we updated the six bathing suites to include spa inspired features which improve resident’s bathing experiences: soothing under water lighting and relaxing music are just two of the features included in the new whirlpool tubs. To further update the bathing suites, new flooring and finishes were added. These improvements have already enhanced the lives of the residents living at Shalom Park’s Nursing Home.

The biggest on-campus change is perhaps to our Nursing Home’s dining service. After reviewing the results of a resident dining service survey, we have implemented a major change to our dining rooms. As of January 12th, we will provide both kosher and non-kosher dining. Each resident will select the dining program of their preference.

Even though we are changing our dinning service, we will not procure or prepare pork or shellfish in our kitchens. And our synagogue will remain a kosher space out respect for the Torah. Residents who want to keep kosher will have their meals prepared by Ira and Terry Indich. Ira has served as Shalom Park’s lead Mashgiach for the last 7 years. Before joining Shalom Park, Ira and Terri operated a kosher restaurant in Cherry Creek for 12 years and are excited to prepare personalized home cooked kosher meals for those Shalom Park residents who keep kosher.

Senior Residences RenovationsConstruction is under way on Shalom Park’s Senior Residences. The patio and apartment homes are being updated. The modernized units will feature new sleek appliances and contemporary countertops. Shalom Park’s maintenance staff member, Victor Loya, worked with Home Depot’s Pro Desk to put together a great deal for us on the new appliances! The renovations kicked off on November 28th when Pro Cabinet Solutions arrived to install the new cabinets and counter tops. The installation of the new countertops and cabinets are off to a great start, with several units already completed.

In addition to updating individual patio and apartment homes, the apartment building recently had a new boiler installed, and the roof was partially replaced. This past October, the asphalt in the employee parking lot and near the Wellness Center was repaired and replaced as needed.

Shalom Park has invested in a new golf cart to transport elders residing in our patio homes and apartments to the nursing home. Residents can call the concierge to schedule a trip to the nursing home for activities, to stop by the Bistro, or to visit the Wellness Center.

We are dedicated to caring for the elders living at Shalom Park. We are committed to providing a comfortable home environment for the residents living here, and one way we accomplish this is by being good stewards to our entire campus. In 2017 we will be looking at our landscaping and updating common spaces inside and outside the apartment building.

Keep an eye out for more updates in future newsletters.

I have been working out at the J. Leonard Levy Family Wellness Center for over a year. Recently, I was in an accident with my motor scooter and broke my right leg femur bone, cracked my knee and had a radial fracture in my right elbow. As a result I couldn’t put weight on my leg or arm and had to rely on my left leg and arm to maneuver the wheelchair and walker.

Fortunately, my rehabilitation progressed rapidly since I had been working out consistently at the Wellness Center. My left arm and leg were strong since I swam and worked out on the elliptical and arm weight machines four-five times a week. I was able to dress myself right away and bend down to pick up objects easily since I had improved on balance, stretching and flexibility from taking Cindy Luebke’s water aerobics and strength classes. The Physical and Occupational Therapists were very pleased with my progress and gave me advanced exercises and tasks

since I was already physically fit. Despite working out, I still found the initial therapy to be tiring. I can’t imagine how difficult rehabilitation would be for people who weren’t working out prior to an accident or surgery.

Shalom’s Wellness Center is a great place to work out as it has so many therapeutic and recreational fitness options and classes available for people with different needs and physical abilities. This will be very good for me as I will have to work up to my former fitness level and may need to take advantage of different equipment and classes. I’ve also met and enjoy talking to many interesting and nice people. A bonus is that the staff is very skilled, committed, and knowledgeable. They truly care for the members.

I heard about the center from my friends who had been working out here. At first I came to swim laps since the water was warmer than other pools. After a month I

needed a more intense workout so I added a weight room equipment workout. I hadn’t worked out on equipment for several years and the staff was more than willing to answer questions about equipment use and suggest more effective ways to work out. Later, I wanted even more variety so I started taking a couple of the swim fitness classes. The center is a fun place to work out. Last year the staff took clever photos of the participants for the Olympic-themed fundraising event. I really enjoy working out at the center for these reasons. I didn’t anticipate having my accident but I’m very grateful that my rehabilitation progressed faster due to the benefits of working out at Shalom’s Wellness Center.

Joan Peterson - Workout for Quicker Recovery

In the summer of 2013, I started coming to the J. Leonard Levy Family Wellness Center. While I wanted to continue my fitness journey, I was primarily motivated to use the Wellness Center on campus because I couldn’t pass up the deal for employees! My typical Wellness Center routine involves working out in the gym for 30-60 minutes, followed by a dip in the therapy pool where I enjoy walking in the resistance current channel. Working out sets the tone for my day, just like my early

morning prayer and Bible reading. I found that exercising at the Wellness Center gives me energy and a sense of accomplishment.

The friendly atmosphere at the Wellness Center allows fitness enthusiasts to develop friendships, I have met many wonderful people at the Wellness Center. Cindy Leubke, the Wellness Center Director is always there offering encouragement and helping me do my best. She has helped me incorporate different exercises with and against the current channel in the pool. I have lost weight and feel healthier mentally.

It can be challenging to work out in the mornings, but it is worth the effort to start each day with a burst of energy. I enjoy the health benefits and the many friends I have made while working out in the Wellness Center. We all encourage each other and I look at it as fun, fun, fun, not work.

Doris Dolighan has been a resident at Shalom Park’s Nursing Home for several years. Born in Berlin, Germany on July 12, 1940, as Doris Bruss, Doris enjoyed spending time with her family. Each week Doris looked forward to Sundays when her family would explore boutiques, coffee shops and bakeries in West Berlin. Doris’ father, who was an amazing baker, taught Doris how to bake and cook. He also taught her how to make German pancakes, which according to Doris are best pancakes in the world.

In her early 20’s, Doris worked as a fashion model in Germany. She loved the glamour, make-up and fashionable clothes that go hand in hand with being a model. But Doris noted that the models were not allowed to keep the beautiful clothes they modeled on the runway and in photographs.

When Doris was 22, she moved to the United States with her first husband. He was in the military and the couple moved throughout the United States. Later, she met and married her second husband, Todd Dolighan. Doris and Todd enjoyed going out and socializing.

After moving to the United States, Doris ran her own daycare for 20 years! Doris loves children and has two daughters of her own. When Doris was 54-years-old, she went to work at the Chanel counter at Macy’s and didn’t retired until she was 73.

Doris loves when her daughters visit. Her daughter Peggy lives in Dallas, Texas and her daughter Michelle lives close by in Denver. Michelle is a ballet teacher at the Classical Dance Academy. Michelle and her students have become familiar faces around Shalom Park as they have performed The Nutcracker for residents during the holidays for the last several years.

As a resident at Shalom Park, Doris actively participates in many activities and special events. Shalom Park is lucky to have a Doris as a member of our community.

Pictured to the left, Doris during her modeling days serving chocolates to some dignitaries. Behind Doris, to her right, is Willy Brandt, who would go on to become the Chancellor of Germany.
