Utilizing the okala method, the original unit is torn down and itemized, in order to create a life cycle analysis to which concepts can be compared with. A strategy is developed, where areas that will drastically reduce environmental impact are developed into concepts.

Material Impacts:Secondary recycled aluminum and cork are the primary materials.

Manufacturing:The extruded body houses the necessary ducting and mounting points, reducing part count

distribution:The cork ribbing acts as product packaging when in transit, requiring thinner cardboard boxing. When in use the ribs act as finning for air.

longevity: Easy to remove washable filter cartridge, existing overbuilt internals and durable materials allow for a long life. Ageless design language.

end of life: Easy to dismantle ribbing and internals due to extrusion housing, where everything can be pulled out horizontally and recycled.

Using City census data, the target user is discovered and further interviews shed light on their needs and perspective on the problem. Qualitative research on how user’s utilize items, further provide an understanding of street life.

having established that hydration is the main issue facing a large segment of the street homeless, a deeper investigation is launched to validate that hypothesis. Mind mapping and more quantitative research help find pain points. All research led to a set of requirements for concepts development.

a deep dIVe

Public drinking fountains are within the daily 2 mile trek that the homeless endure. The issue is filling 4-6 bottles in a manner

which was never intended.

Plastic PET bottles are every-where and are not fit for long term use and exposure to uV degrades the chemistry, lead-

ing to contaminated water. Furthermore there is no sense

of stability in a PET bottle.

Shopping carts & backpacks dominate this space and space is at a premium. having indi-

vidual bottles is a nuisance and after being exhausted of their

contents, become an inefficient way of storing water.

Doctors recommend 2L of wa-ter per day for optimum health. Street life and addictions only impair temperature regulation

and raise the daily dosage.

The product must uplift the user and act as an object of inspiration and pride; something that affirms their human-ity. The chosen factors are vanity and adaptability. Vanity is seen through the lens of fashion and how this bottle will

catch the attention of the public, instead of simply allowing this issue to be ignored. Adaptability is crucial, the bottle must do more than holding water, for it to be desired and

cherished.

these concepts go beyond the simple need to contain water, by

providing an added benefit or taking the place of another item. creating a philosophy of water doing more than

simply existing.

Water is stored in encapsulated sections that can be rolled into a bottle or stored flat. The surface area can be used as a sitting surface. The objective here is for water to conform to a variety of storage spaces.

Water is stored in bladders atop the shoulders to act as padding for backpack straps and allow quick access for drinking. Relation to fashion accessory can create opportunity for homeless artists to create statement pieces to raise awareness.

Ideation & detailing focused on creating a form that confirmed the inspiration and functionality of a protective case that allows external attachments.

Initial concepts dealt with determining how to focus on the modularity of the case: shape coding, drop in pieces or

sliding pieces.a sliding rail was seen as the most

secure

weight will play a significant factor with modules, thus

the actual case is lightened by means of a skeletal

construction.

To provide drive to a jar with the motor in-line, requires a belt to drive a radical electromagnetic coupling to allow for a jar that slides into the base rather than sit on.

A (electro)magnetic coupling or clutch is employed to eradicate a physical link between jar and base, allowing for a flat jar bottom and flat base surface for easy sliding action with no rocking or clicking. This innovative linkage defines the interaction.

human interaction occurs on a horizontal plane. A Sliding jar eliminates the stress of lifting, reduces physical height for versatile placement and simplifies operation. Touch based controls emphasize this interaction. The jar is magnetically engaged and stabilized to the base and covered by the overhang, not requiring a hand to “steady”.
