In country music, few guys are bigger — at least when itcomes to size — than 6-foot-3, 240-pound Lee Brice. The32-year-old former Clemson long-snapper, who just released his second album, Hard 2 Love, grew up in Sumter,S.C., loving football and music equally. “Football wassomething I was good at and I loved doing and I was proudof,” he says. “Music was something that was in my bones —it’s a bigger, deeper part of me. So when football was over,it was OK. But music will never be over. It’s who I am.”

HAVE ACELEBRITYQUESTION?

Q I follow CSI: NY closely and neversaw any explanation of why

Melina Kanakaredes left the show.Where is she now?

George Missias, Ocean View, Hawaii

After six years on the CSI spinoff, theOhio native’s contract was up in 2010,and she simply decided to move on. Inthe past few years,Kanakaredes has donea lot off-screen, work-ing with Hanes onbreast cancer aware-ness and withthe Greek AmericaFoundation. Shemay be coming backto TV, but you’ll alsobe able to check herout on the bigscreen: She co-starswith Dwayne John-son in next year’saction film Snitch.

QWhat hashappened

to Keanu Reeves?Has he anything newin the works?

Nancy BonatzMamahawkin, N.J.

You’re right — thestar of The Matrix and Speed has stayedmainly under the radar since the 2008sci-fi remake The Day the Earth StoodStill. Reeves has focused on a few indiefilms, such as the upcoming drama Gen-eration Um . . . , but returns to actionfare with two new projects: a starringrole in 47 Ronin, about a bandof 18th-centurysamurai, andthe bilingualmartial-arts fea-

ture Man of Tai Chi,which Reeves isdirecting.

QWill Castle be returningfor a fifth season?

Ken Overley, Benton Harbor, Mich.

The fourth-season finale airsMonday, and while nothingis confirmed as of presstime, the chances look goodfor yet another season ofNathan Fillion’s sleuthingauthor Richard Castle andStana Katic’s talented copKate Beckett growing clos-er. Katic, for one, loves thetension. “They really carefor each other now, theyreally know each other,”she says. “The more historyyou have with someone, ifyou can still be in love andhaven’t acted on it, itheightens everything.”

THE DOCTORS is an award-winning day-time TV show with pediatrician Jim Sears,OB-GYN Lisa Masterson, ER physicianTravis Stork, plastic surgeon Andrew Ordonand psychologist Wendy Walsh.

It’s May . . . already. You sworeyou’d be in shape by now, butsomehow the swimsuit season isupon us, and the slim-down-firm-up part of your promise hasn’tcome to pass. To help make up forlost time, start with the basics:Limit fatty red meat and opt for

lean poultry and fish; choose low-fat dairyand whole-grain products; eat more fillingfiber (beans, barley, berries) and less bloat-ing salt; do lots of your shopping in theproduce aisle; and, of course, watch yourportions of everything.

Just as important: Walk, jog or ride yourbike on most days (combined with a healthydiet, regular cardio helps shed pounds andboost energy) and work strength traininginto your routine at least twice a week to tonemuscles and help you better burn calories. Here are seven more tips — all based onscience — that may help boost your shape-upplan so you look your best this summer:

Swap out soda.Even if you change nothing else, you

can still drop a few pounds by simplytrading your sugar-soaked soft drinkfor water, reports new research in theAmerican Journal of ClinicalNutrition. Water is yourbest choice for overall health. If you need any moreconvincing to make theswitch, maybe thesenumbers will help:300 calories and 20teaspoons of sugar. That’s about how muchyou’ll save by replacingjust two cans of soda inyour diet.

Choose smelly foods. It sounds bizarre, but a study

shows people tend to takesmaller bites when a food’saroma is stronger. The possible rea-son: Researcherssuspect that smellalerts the sensesthat somethingintense is onits way.

Work out harder, faster…By doing so, you can burn bonus calo-

ries long after you finish exercising —more than 10 hours after — previouslypublished research suggests. A studyfound that men whopedaled vigorously ona stationary bike for45 minutes burned anextra 190 calories overthe 14 hours aftertheir workout — that’son top of the 500-pluscalories they burnedon the bike. Research-ers believe the same effect could apply toother high-intensity activities such asrunning, jogging and playing basketball.

But don’t exercisetoo close to bedtime.

It could make it tougher for you to fallasleep, and the less you sleep, the moreyou eat, according to new preliminaryresearch. Findings presented for theAmerican Heart Association suggest thatchronic lack of sleep may contribute toobesity. More specifically, people who aresleep-deprived (which for this study wasan hour and 20 minutes less sleep)consumed an average of 550 additionalcalories each day. Research also indicateswhen you sleep less, you burn fewer calo-ries and less fat. A few tips to help getyour body the sleep it needs to be a lean,calorie-burning machine: Set and stick to

a regular sleep schedule; establisha relaxing routine before bed;

and keep your bedroomcool, dark and quiet.

Eat carrots,spinach,tomatoes,

watermelons.The first two are rich

in beta-carotene, the last twoin lycopene: Consuming those two

plant pigments can get skin glowingfor summer, a new study suggests.Fruits and veggies are foremost waist-friendly foods that add fiber to yourdiet and volume to your dishes (for notmany calories). And consider this bo-nus: According to a study published inthe journal PLoS One, people who atethree extra servings of produce a daydeveloped color changes to their skinthat made them look healthier andmore attractive. Other foods that con-tain these compounds include yams, peaches and apricots. 6

Order à la cartewhen dining out.

You can still have dinner at your favor-ite restaurant, but there’s no

reason to eat everything thatcomes with the special. Pickand choose your meal, andyou’re more likely to save

calories. That’s just one tip ona list of strategies compiled byresearchers. What else was inthe bag of eating-out tricks? Boxup half your meal “to go” before

you start eating; skip “unloved”calories (are cold fries really worth it?);order dressings on the side; and alwayschoose steamed over fried.

Try an app to stay on track.Overweight adults who used electronic

devices that gave daily feedback stuck totheir programs better than those whokept pen-and-paper diaries, researchshows. Choose one that offers gentle re-minders to keep you focused on your goal.

“Brand names tend to have stronger anti-aging ingredients and are lesslikely to irritate or clog pores,” George says. Plus, store brands are oftenloaded with fillers, chemicals and oils.

Most deodorants contain the same active ingredient.

In 2010, Target’s Up & Up Sport sunscreen beat out a slew of pricieroptions to be named a “best buy” from Consumer Reports. “Look forbroad-spectrum coverage, and since you should go through sunscreenlike water, buy it in bulk,” George says.

“The best eye shadows and foundations are still brand-name buys,”George says. Why? “Brand names tend to have longer-wear formulas, and you’re more likely to find a foundation to truly match your skinshade.” (If you are looking to skimp, however, try Sephora, which hasmore than 200 affordable products of its own that are great quality.)

Most contain the same active ingredient. “A good hairspray providesmaximum hold with minimal buildup, so look for labels that call thatout,” George says.

“Polish technically should sit on top of your base. Since polish itself isn’tsitting on your nail bed, skimping is fine,” George says. For the base?Splurge.

“This is not an area you want to play around with!” George says.

THE DAYS OF people turning theirnoses up at generic or storebrands are over — especially

when it comes to beauty, says RebekahGeorge, beauty and style expert andhost of Total Look on TotalBeauty.com.“Many drugstore chains are creatingtheir own private label brands that rivaltheir well-known, and more expensive,brand-name counterparts,” she adds. But not every product can be easilyswapped out for a cheaper alternative.“Certain ingredients are patented andhard to duplicate,” she says. “What’skey is knowing whenkey is knowing whenkey is knowing whenyou can get awayyou can get awayyou can get awaywith a store brandwith a store brandwith a store brandand when youand when youand when youcan’t.” Here’scan’t.” Here’scan’t.” Here’syour guide:your guide:your guide:

MANY WOMEN SEE Moth-er’s Day as a respitefrom cooking, but for me,

being in the kitchen on a Sunday, when I am in no rush, is a real

treat. Each year Ihost brunch for mymom, my sister andour families, and Irelish the meal andthe time we spendrelaxing together. That said, I don’twant to work toohard, either, whichis why this dish fillsthe bill perfectly. It

is fuss-free, yet worthy of a cele-bration. It’s an ideal brunch entreethat naturally bridges the break-fast-lunch gap: a hearty spinach

salad adorned with two morning staples, eggs and bacon.

Besides being delicious, it’shealthy and low in calories, withspinach providing its dark-green-leafy concentration of nutrients, eggbringing satisfying protein and loadsof essential vitamins and minerals, and Canadian bacon supplying thatsumptuous smoky pork flavor in amuch leaner way than regular bacon, since it is made from the low-fat,protein-rich loin cut.

It is so simple that if Mom doesneed a break from the kitchen, evenan unseasoned cook — perhaps aspouse or an older child — can whipit up. What’s more, this recipe goesnicely with a glass of champagne for that all-important toast to themothers in our lives.

A SATISFYING,NUTRIENT-RICH WAYTO START YOUR DAYIt’s an ideal meal for breakfast, brunch or lunch.

WEIGHT LOSS UPDATE:

Super-Powerful “Diet Pills”Make ComebackThey’re flying off the shelf... But they’re NOT for everyone!By Tiffany Strobel*

M ost of us thoughtthe era of the “Super-Powerful” diet pill

ended a few years back when theFDA removed Ephedra andFen-Phen from the U.S. marketbecause of safety concerns.

Well, it turns out that “most ofus” were wrong. It seems that ahuge, multi-billion-dollar, “un-derground” market for theseamphetamine-like fat burnerssprung up even before the inkwas dry on the FDA’s decree.

But recently, an entirely newcrop of high-quality, super-powerful and super-effective dietpills are coming out of hiding andare hitting the shelves of yourlocal GNC.

The current leader in this newcategory is a product calledBiphedAdrene™, developed andsold by Generix Labs, LLC.The company tells us thatBiphedAdrene is a two-part system comprised of aunique “Amphetamine ProvisionalComplex” (for powerful appetitecontrol, mood-elevation, and

While the pills do cause rapidweight loss (no doubtabout that), this product is fastbecoming a favorite amongbodybuilders, college students, and overstressed, exhaustedhomemakers for its energy andstamina-boosting properties (in

other words as powerful “go-fast”pills). Because cult-like trendsthat begin with bodybuildersand college students quicklybecome mainstream, manyBiphedAdrene (or BiPhed forshort) critics are concernedabout the overuse of thesepowerful compounds.

A spokesperson for Generix Labsexplains, “One of the things we

often heard, as we made a studyof the weight-loss market, isthat people missed the mood-elevation and boost of energythat were ‘side-effects,’ if youwill, of the Fen-Phen andEphedra class of diet pills. Theweight loss was always primary, but nearly as important was theincrease in energy and mood. These new non-amphetaminecompounds provide not only verysubstantial weight loss, but also asimilar mood and energy boost.”

While these “super pills” arefinding their way into the generalmarketplace, they are definitely

not for everyone. In fact, youshouldn’t even think about takingthem if losing five or six “vanitypounds” is your goal. These dietpills are intended exclusively forthe significantly overweight. Butthat’s not the only caveat. Youshould check with your doctor toensure you are in overall goodhealth before considering any ofthis new category of pills.

Let’s face it... even though thisnew generation of diet pills, suchas BiphedAdrene, promise “easy”weight loss, increased energy, andimproved mood, they areexpensive ($135 for a 30-daysupply) and need to be used veryresponsibly. See you in thesupplement section!

If you disagree, pair PJ topswith leggings, or PJ bottomswith tight tanks. But lose theslippers and bedhead. 6
