Once grouped, the shapes behave asa single unit or the purposes o moving, ipping, rotating, copying, patterning, erasingand urther gluing. Note that this is di erent rom merely selecting multiple shapes. For example, when rotating multiple selected shapes, each shape rotates around itsown center point; whereas rotating a group o shapes will cause all o the shapes torotate relative to the center point o the entire group. An Important note about rotating grouped shapes:Due to the way Shapes calculates the center o a group o shapes, rotating a group X degrees in one direction then rotating it back X degrees in the opption may leave the group a ew pixels o rom its original position. While this is a airly uncommthe dri t is usually slight, its important to be aware o this issue in case students become con used instance, rotating a group 2 increments counterclockwise then 2 increments clockwise doesnt returnto exactly the same position where it began.

    Copy Tool

Selecting thecopy toolthen clicking on a shape will cause an identical shape to appein the work area slightly down and to the right o the original. I multiple shapesselected, copies o each o them will appear in the same positions relative to eachas the originals. I a group o shapes is selected, an identical group will appear.

    Pattern Tool

Thepattern toolallows the user to create patterns by repeatedly copying and manipuing shapes in the same manner.

To get a sense o how the pattern tool works, try the ollowing:1. Place a shape in the workspace (in this case, a square).

    2. Click the record button (red circle) on the pattern tool bar.

Once therecord buttonis clicked, it changes to the stop button (white square) andonly tools used in each step o making a pattern are available. A dialog bubble wiinstructing the user to copy the shape(s) they want to pattern.

A copy will appear in the work areaall other shapes (including the original) will become inactive and turn gray. The copytool will become inactive and the arrow and rotate tools will become available.

It could also be applied to a group o shapes:

The pattern tool can be used or a wide variety o applications. For example, i yhad a triangle and wanted to copy, rotate, and move it 5 times to create a hexagon aillustrated below:

This could be accomplished quickly using the pattern tool as ollows.

    1. Place an equilateral triangle in the workspace

    2. Hit the record button on the pattern tool and copy the triangle.

    3. Use the arrow and rotate tools to move and rotate the copy as pictured below.

    4. Stop recording, then apply the pattern to the newly created triangle.

    5. Repeatedly applying the pattern to each new copy o the triangle will eventuallya hexagon:

The examples above are just two o many uses or the Pattern Tool. However, onlpattern may be stored at a time, so whenever a new pattern is recorded, the old one
