Welcome Message

Mrs Fanny LawChairperson,Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation

It is with great pleasure that I welcome delegates to the 10th anniversary of our agship innovation conference, which this year has been rebranded as APAC Innovation Summit (AIS) to reect this momentous event. We are expecting more than 2,000 participants, including our partners, regional and international thought leaders and inspiring inuencers, to gather for the week-long meeting to share experiences and explore opportunities for collaboration in shaping the future.

We have chosen “Shaping the Future” as our theme for this year’s event to highlight the way in which innovation and technology will determine the world in which we live and how knowledge sharing and collaboration can contribute to the continued advancement of mankind. Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (“HKSTP”) has not only been a breeding ground for innovation in Hong Kong, we also dedicate ourselves relentlessly to promote the adoption of advanced technologies among industries and the commercialisation of innovation achievements for the greater good of mankind.

AIS has long been an integral part of HKSTP's commitment to our mission to connect industry stakeholders, foster collaboration and accelerate technological innovations; and this year will be no different. Not only is AIS the largest in both scope and size, it will also cement Hong Kong’s position as a leading technology and innovation hub in Asia.

With the support from Hong Kong’s universities, R&D centres and over 90 trade associations, AIS creates a forum where leading minds and inuencers can converge to inspire new thinking models and engage in forward-thinking dialogue on policy implementation and market adaption.

Welcome Message

An exciting programme has been drawn up to include sharing and networking opportunities by thought leaders in a variety of formats, kicking off with an International Knowledge Transfer Conference. Technology Forums designed to reinforce our cluster approach will help set the blueprint for Hong Kong’s future while the Main Conference will feature insights of leading government policy makers, academics and business leaders.

The Financial Times will host the rst FT Innovate Asia 2014 designed to help C-Suite decision makers explore the challenges associated with new technologies, and the Hong Kong Venture Capital and Angels Investment Conference will explore business opportunities in new technology.

Lastly, Hong Kong Tech Showcase @ IDT Expo, will allow HKSTP as well as local universities, R&D centres and Hong Kong inventors to introduce their latest innovations to local and overseas enterprises for potential commercialisation.

I am condent that AIS will once again prove to be a stimulating platform for government, academia, research and development, nance and related industries to exchange views on current challenges and opportunities for Asian innovation and for HKSTP to help propel this important movement forward.

Green TechnologiesGovernments and private sectors are facing unprecedented economic and environmental challenges for decades, while corporate social responsibility and sustainability becomes economic imperatives. Luckily, environmental sustainability has become economically protable and even economically advantageous. Companies no longer have to choose between bottom line and environmental impact – technology has enabled win-win solutions. Corporate social responsibility and sustainability are now economic imperatives. And sustainability is no longer a buzzword on annual reports, rather a key competitive component of expenses and revenues. Therefore, Green technologies are at the highest demand ever, and going green is bigger than the Internet. It could be the biggest economic opportunity of the 21st century for being sustainable.

Translational BiomedicineThe goal of translational biomedicine is to accelerate the pace of medical research from bench to bedside. It narrows the gap between effective patient care and discovery of new treatments. Medical scientists do make great discoveries but often nd it challenging to translate discoveries into practical solutions without a deep understanding of the needs of patients. Successful implementations often involve a close collaboration and an effective feedback loop between scientists and clinicians.

This Tech Forum provides a great opportunity for industrial partners, scientists, and clinicians to learn from highly esteemed practitioners who have rst-hand experience in conducting translational research and knowledge transfer in biomedicine. The speakers will focus not only on “what” but also on “how” to conduct translational research. Speakers will also share their success stories in turning their research outputs into companies, treatment procedures, drugs or devices.

RoboticsWith a new age dawning, robots are coming into our lives more than ever before. Some may say that there is no issue more polarising to the human race than robots. But here, we don't heed those overblown warnings about the robot apocalypse. Instead, we like to focus on the ways robots are improving our daily lives and helping people in need. At the Forum, you could see that robots are now used to help take videos from an unmanned aerial vehicle, rescue survivors in the wake of disaster amongst providing many other helpful services, and so on. Robots are also allowing people to live better, more independent lives. For example, robots could someday allow more freedom for the elderly by assisting and encouraging them to take their medicine, do their rehab exercises, or perform tasks around the home.

"The whole notion of working directly with people and understanding society's needs is an incredibly powerful thing. I think people don't really realise it, because there's this stigma that an engineer is someone who is a nerd who sits in a cubicle. It's about working with people and solving interesting problems. I wish more people would understand that that's what it is, because it's really one of the most fun things you could possibly do.” says Even Mataric.

14:00 Welcome from the FT Mr David Pilling Asia Editor, Financial Times

14:15 [Keynote Interview] Doing Business in a Digital Age: Why Innovation is Imperative

Asia is home to some of the fastest growing economies in the world; and as India, China, Thailand, Indonesia, and other nations continue to develop at this exceptional pace, there is huge scope for progress and innovation, across a variety of industries.

Many nancial leaders and policy makers believe that innovation is the key to economic growth. China’s President Xi Jinping last year called on companies to capitalise on the country’s industrial revolution to create innovations in science and technology, management, marketing and branding.

But what does it take to turn a novel idea into a commercial reality? What must business leaders do to breed creativity and innovation within rms? How can education systems and programmes help to nurture the imagination and celebrate originality early on? What are the process and considerations involved start-ups or entrepreneurial angel investors be translated into economic benets?

The Financial Times and Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks will gather CEOs and other C-suite decision-makers from cutting-edge businesses that have successfully conquered the Asian market. The Summit will explore the challenges associated with taking a new technology, concept or brand to market, with a special focus on realising Asia’s huge economic and business potential.

TOMORROWstarts here.

Today, it’s easy to marvel at how far we’ve come.

Our phones talk to our TVs to record our favorite shows. Doctors in Estonia diagnosepatients in Denmark. Social networks help companies improve customer service.

And yet, up to now, more than 99% of our world is not connected to the Internet.

But we’re working on it.

And tomorrow, we’ll wake up pretty much everything else you can imagine.

Trees will talk to networks will talk to scientists about climate change.

Stoplights will talk to cars will talk to road sensors about increasing traffic efficiency.

Ambulances will talk to patient records will talk to doctors about saving lives.

It’s a phenomenon we call the Internet of Everything—an unprecedented opportunity

for today’s businesses.

Tomorrow?

We’re going to wake the world up. And watch, with eyes wide, as it gets to work.
