AARHUS (DEN- MARK), OCTOBER 13: Indian women team pro- gressed to the quarterfinals of the Uber Cup with a con- vincing 4-1 victory over Scotland as shuttlers Aditi Bhatt and Tasnim Mir regis- tered confident singles wins here today. India are now sitting sec- ond in Group B with two wins from as many matches. They had beaten Spain 3- 2 on Sunday when top player Saina Nehwal was forced to retire from her match due to a groin issue. Taking the court first, Malvika Bansod lost to Kirsty Gilmour 13-21 9-21 before Aditi got the better of Rachel Sugden 21-14 21-8 to level the scores. The doubles pair of Tan- isha Crasto and Rutaparna Panda then beat Julie Machperson and Ciara Tor- rance 21-11 21-8 to hand In- dia a 2-1 lead. Tasnim sealed the tie in India’s favour by defeating Lauren Middleton 21-15 21- 6. In the reverse doubles, the young pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopic- hand, daughter of national coach Pullela Gopichand, fought hard before getting the better of Gilmour and Eleanor O’Donnell 21-8 19- 21 21-10 in an exciting clash that lasted for 55 minutes. The Indian team will now take on Thailand on Wednesday. India has twice (2014, New Delhi and 2016, Kunshan) reached the semifinals of the tourna- ment. Uber cup: Women steal the show against Scots to make quarters PARIS, OCTOBER 13: Another hat trick for Cris- tiano Ronaldo, another win — and qualification for the World Cup — for Denmark. And yet more crowd trou- ble in a game between Eng- land and Hungary. There was a sense of fa- miliarity to the World Cup qualifiers in Europe on Tuesday, not least in Faro where Ronaldo extended his men's record tally of in- ternational goals to 115 by scoring the 58th hat trick of his career for club and country in Portugal's 5-0 win over Luxembourg. Denmark became the sec- ond European nation to qualify for next year's tour- nament in Qatar, after Ger- many on Monday, by secur- ing an eighth straight win in group play by beating Aus- tria 1-0. The decisive win — sealed by Joakim Maehle's sec- ond-half goal — came at the Parken Stadium in Copen- hagen where star play- maker Christian Eriksen collapsed in June during a European Championship game. It is still unclear if Eriksen can resume his ca- reer to play at the World Cup in 13 months' time. England is likely to be there, but was made to wait before booking its place after being held to a 1-1 draw by Hungary at Wembley Sta- dium. Events on the field were overshadowed by clashes between police officers and Hungary supporters at the start of the match, sparked — according to police — by a visiting fan making "racially aggravated" comments to- ward a steward. Disorder by Hungary fans — including racism — dur- ing the first group match between the teams, in Bu- dapest last month, led to the Hungarians having to play a game in an empty sta- dium. Sweden climbed above Spain into first place in Group B with a 2-0 win over Greece, and Switzerland moved level on points with Italy in Group C with a 4-0 victory over Lithuania. In Group A, Portugal is a point behind Serbia, which beat Azerbaijan 3-1, but has a game in hand. Only the top team from each group qualifies auto- matically for the World Cup. The second-place fin- ishers go into the playoffs. A pair of penalties, in the eighth and 13th minutes, set Ronaldo on his way to a record 10th international hat trick for Portugal that was completed in the 87th minute. The 36-year-old Man- chester United striker was playing his 182nd interna- tional game. Bruno Fernandes and João Palhinha also scored for Portugal in its fourth straight win in qualifying, which left a straight shootout with Serbia for first place. Serbia's last game is at Portugal, which will first play its game in hand away to Ireland. Denmark is continuing its good form from the Euro- pean Championship, where the team surged to the semifinals despite losing Eriksen in distressing cir- cumstances in the opening game. The clean sheet against Austria meant the Danes have yet to concede in Group F, while they are the only team with a 100% record in qualifying. Maehle scored with a sweeping shot that was teed up by Thomas Delaney's di- rect run, taking Denmark to 27 goals — second only to the Netherlands. Denmark holds an unas- sailable seven-point lead over Scotland, which is still on track to finish runner-up after a 1-0 win at the Faeroe Islands. Scotland is four points clear of third-place Israel, which beat visiting Moldova 2-1. Crowd trouble marred both of the games in Group I — at the start of the Eng- land-Hungary game and near the end of Albania- Poland. The unrest at Wembley unfolded after officers en- tered the away stand "to ar- rest a spectator for a racially aggravated" comment to- ward a steward," the Metro- politan Police said in a statement. Police were seen wielding batons to hold back the visit- ing fans but the rest of the game passed off largely peacefully. The English Football As- sociation said it was report- ing the incident to FIFA, which has previously put Hungary on probation with the threat of another game being played without fans if there was further disorder at games. Cristiano Ronaldo scores hat trick, Denmark qualifies for World Cup AARHUS (DEN- MARK), OCTOBER 13 : The Indian men’s bad- minton team hammered Tahiti 5-0 to enter the quar- terfinals of the Thomas Cup for the first time since 2010 but the women’s team suf- fered a crushing 0-5 defeat against a strong Thailand in its last group match here. It was the first defeat for Indian women after beating Spain (3-2) and Scotland (4-1). The women’s team has already reached the quarterfinals. The men’s team, on Tues- day, recorded its second straight 5-0 win, having beaten the Netherlands with an identical margin on Sunday. The team is now in last-eight stage and the last time Indian men made the quarterfinals of the tourna- ment, they had lost to In- donesia. In the Uber Cup, the In- dian women’s team wrapped up its Group B en- gagement with a drubbing at the hands of Thailand. Malvika Bansod lost the opening women’s singles 15-21 11-21 to Pornpawee Chochowong. India needed to win the next doubles match but Ashwini Ponappa and Sikki N Reddy went down fight- ing 16-21 12-21 to Jongkol- phan Kititharakul and Rawinda Prajongjai. For India to stay alive, it was imperative for Aditi Bhatt to win the next singles match. She fought her heart out but lost 16-21 21-18 15-21 to Busanan Ongbamrung- phan in a match that lasted 59 minutes. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand then fought hard before losing 17-21 16- 21 to Puttita Supajirakul and Sapsiree Taerat- tanachai. Tasnim Mir took the court with an aim to avoid a whitewash but lost 19-21 15-21 to Supaninda Katethong. Tasnim had a good chance to win the first game as she was leading 17- 14 but lost points in a jiffy to let slip advantage. Meanwhile, Tuesday’s win over Tahiti ensured that Indian men’s team will fin- ish in top-two in the four- team Group C. India will take on traditional power- house China in the final match on Thursday. B Sai Praneeth began the proceedings with a 21-5 21-6 win over Louis Beaubois in just 23 minutes in the open- ing singles. Sameer Verma made it 2- 0 with an easy 21-12 21-12 victory over Remi Rossi in 41 minutes. Kiran George sealed the tie for India with a 21-4 21-2 thrashing of Elias Maublanc in the third men’s singles that got over in only 15 minutes. In the inconsequential doubles matches, the pair of Krishna Prasad and Vishnu Vardhan achieved a 21-8 21-7 win in 21 minutes be- fore Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty beat Maublanc and Heiva Yvonet 21-5 21-3. Indian men reach Thomas Cup quarters, women lose 0-5 to Thailand in Uber Cup last group match MELBOURNE, OCTO- BER 13: Cricket Australia chairman Earl Eddings re- signed on Wednesday, a day before he was due to stand for re-election at the board's annual general meeting. Eddings, whose three- year chairmanship was marked by near-constant division between member states, was under pressure after fellow board directors nominated by New South Wales and Queensland withdrew their support for him this week. Western Australia also pulled its support after a meeting late on Tuesday, dealing a terminal blow to his re-election hopes, Aus- tralian media reported. "It has been an honour and a privilege to be able to serve the sport I love as a Cricket Australia director," Eddings said. "It is my sincere hope that following my resignation the state and territory asso- ciations can unite and work together in the best inter- ests of cricket, allowing the focus to return to the sport ahead of the 2021-22 sea- son." Director Richard Freudenstein was installed as chairman in his place and will serve for a short period until a permanent replace- ment is elected, CA said in a statement on Wednesday. Eddings' resignation comes only weeks after CA said he had the full support of the board despite state members New South Wales and Queensland publicly opposing his re-election. A CA director for 13 years, Eddings replaced David Peever in 2018 as interim chairman after the former mining executive resigned following the release of a scathing cultural review into the Newlands ball-tam- pering scandal. Eddings was quickly in- stalled as permanent chair- man, triggering an embar- rassing complaint from his home state Victoria, which had opposed his appoint- ment. Victoria removed him as its nominated direc- tor the following year but Eddings managed to cling to the chairmanship as an independent director. Eddings and the CA board came under major scrutiny after the governing body stood down 80% of its staff and tried to ram through swinging cuts to state grants as "proactive measures" to deal with the fall-out from the COVID-19 pandemic. Those moves, announced by former CEO Kevin Roberts but endorsed by the board, were condemned by eastern states and the players' union, which said they would prove "disas- trous" for the game. With pressure mounting, Roberts resigned after los- ing support of the board but Eddings pressed on for re- election despite reports of discontent dogging him to the eve of the AGM. Earl Eddings resigns as Cricket Australia chairman ahead of AGM NEW DELHI, OCTO- BER 13: Fast bowling all- rounder Shardul Thakur on Wednesday replaced Axar Patel in India's squad for the T20 World Cup to be held in the UAE and Oman from October 17. The 29-year-old Thakur has impressed with his 18 wickets in the ongoing IPL for Chennai Super Kings. "The All-India Senior Se- lection Committee after a discussion with the team management has added Shardul Thakur to the main squad. All-rounder Axar Patel, who was part of the 15-member squad will now be on the list of stand-by players," BCCI secretary Jay Shah said in a state- ment. With pace all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who plays for Mumbai Indians, not bowling during the IPL be- cause of fitness issues, the selectors wanted a cover for him. "The selectors felt that they were one pacer short and also with Hardik Pandya not bowling, they needed an all-rounder in the main squad," a source close to the selection com- mittee told PTI. "Axar remains in stand by and if Ravindra Jadeja gets injured, he will again be back in main team. Till Jaddu plays, Axar won't be required." As reported by PTI, the selectors also in- cluded Harshal Patel among the net bowlers for the Indian team. "The following cricketers will join the team bubble in Dubai and assist Team In- dia in their preparations: Avesh Khan, Umran Malik, Harshal Patel, Lukman Meriwala, Venkatesh Iyer, Karn Sharma, Shahbaz Ahmed and K. Gowtham," the statement said. India will open their cam- paign on October 24 against Pakistan.
