Share Lent In 2017, 68.5 million of our sisters and brothers were forced to flee their homes because they feared for their lives and their safety. They set out on a long and difficult journey, sometimes risking their lives, in the hope of living in dignity and peace. In Colombia, slightly more than 7.7 million people have been displaced because of conflict, violence, natural disasters, and development projects, resulting in this country having the most internally displaced people in the world. The National Agrarian Coordination, a Development and Peace partner, works with Indigenous women, many of whom have been forcibly displaced. They are taught new skills to engage in dialogue with local, regional, and national authorities. By promoting inclusive and participatory democracies, we tackle one of the root causes of forced migration. Archdiocese of Winnipeg Synod Implementation We encourage all the baptized to acquire familiarity with Sacred ScriptureThis Lent, as part of the implementation of our Archdiocesan Synod, we are invited to connect with family and friends in a very special way using Lectio Divina or Breaking open the Word. This ancient method of praying with sacred texts dates to the fourth century. What do you think God is saying?Listen deeply. · What might God be asking you to do? · Close with the Our Father. Share a healthy treat. Lenten Activities Stations of the Cross every Lenten Friday at 7:00 pm. We invite all parishioners to participate. After praying the Stations you are invited to watch a 20 minute segment of the movie, “The Life of Jesus, According to Gospel of John”. The catechism program would like to invite all parishioners to participate in our Journey through Lent. Each time you are able to come to church to join in the Stations of the Cross, please put a "foot print" along the wall under the Stations. The "foot prints" symbolize our walk with Jesus as he made his way to Calvary. We hope this will help our children understand that our life of faith is a journey always directed toward God and eternal life. The footprints and tape will be available at the entrance of the church. Thank you in advance for your participation. Eucharistic Adoration - Every Wednesday after the 9:30 am Mass at St. Joseph’s Parish we have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament followed by Adoration. At 10:45 am the Divine Mercy Chaplet is prayed followed by Solemn Benediction. Plan to spend time in our Church with Jesus especially during holy season of Lent. “Little Black Books” will help you journey through the days of Lent. There are still a few available at the church entrances for only $2.00 Lenten Penitential Service Thursday, Apr 4, 7:00 pm in St. Joseph’s Church. First Sunday of Lent Each year as we start the Lenten season many of us struggle with the question of what to do. We're asking ourselves what we should be doing this Lent to make it one that will bring some more depths into our spiritual lives. Often the question comes down to: What should I give up this Lenten season? We are so used to Lent as a time when we are to deprive ourselves of something, that there might be a chance we are missing the point of it all. In a way, when we start trying to decide what to give up, we are placing the emphasis upon ourselves. There is a subtle temptation here that the most important thing we can do for our spiritual lives is something that we can actually do ourselves. We are putting ourselves into the centre of the circle. But shouldn't the emphasis be upon God? UNDERSTANDING the PARTS of the MASS The Creed We stand again for our profession of our faith, where we reaffirm our beliefs in the truths of our faith before going on to partake in the body and blood of Christ. The creed is usually the Nicene Creed, although the Apostle’s Creed may be substituted in. At times the creed will be replaced by a renewal of our baptismal promises. Prayers of the Faithful (stand) We continue to stand for the prayers of the faithful. This is our opportunity to bring our concerns as a community of faith to God. These prayers include our concerns for the Church, the world, including political policies and leaders, those in any form of need, and the community. This is also a time to pray as a community for those who have died, those who are ill, the newly married or born, and other life passages. There is usually time at the end of these prayers for silent personal prayers to be said, although some smaller communities ask for people to contribute these personal prayers out loud. There is a response after each prayer, which can be designated for that Mass. The usual response, however, is “Lord, hear our prayer.” LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST The Liturgy of the Eucharist is paired with the Liturgy of the Word as the central focus of the Mass. Here we are brought to the table, to share bread and wine, to feast together. This feast is much more than your usual dinner party. It is also a memorial dinner, where we break the bread and pass the cup in memory of Jesus, as he asked us to do. It’s a bit like obeying the last wishes of a dying friend; only this friend went past death and is with us still. So, it is more than a memorial feast. The Eucharist is a sacrament. By breaking the bread and passing the cup, we do much more than participate in a symbolic action; we make that symbol real and powerful. This part of the Mass is also very reminiscent of the Jewish Passover meal, which was the meal that Jesus shared with his followers before his death. Our prayers over the bread and wine echo the ancient blessings over bread and wine from the Jewish tradition, blessings that are still spoken today. Archdiocese of Winnipeg Synod Implementation

“We encourage all the baptized to acquire familiarity with Sacred Scripture”

This Lent, as part of the implementation of our Archdiocesan Synod, we are invited to connect with family and friends in a very special way using Lectio Divina or “Breaking open the Word.” This ancient method of praying with sacred texts dates to the fourth century. The four simple steps of Lectio Divina: reading, meditation, prayer and contemplation take about 20 minutes.

Lectio Made Simple For Families · Settle in a cozy spot.

· Read the Sunday Gospel, slowly, 2 or even 3 times. (encourage children to use their imagination – can you see yourself in the story?)

· One of the following questions can be discussed after each reading of the scripture passage. (allow everyone an opportunity to speak)

· Encourage a response. “What did you like in the story?”

· God speaks to us through this story. “What do you think God is saying?” Listen deeply.

· “What might God be asking you to do?”

· Close with the Our Father. Share a healthy treat.

of Lent

Each year as we start the Lenten season many of us struggle with the question of what to do.

There is a subtle temptation here that the most important thing we can do for our spiritual lives is something that we can actually do ourselves. We are putting ourselves into the centre of the circle. But shouldn't the emphasis be upon God?

UNDERSTANDING the PARTS of the MASS

our beliefs in the truths of our faith before going on to partake in

the body and blood of Christ. The creed is usually the Nicene

Creed, although the Apostle’s Creed may be substituted in. At

times the creed will be replaced by a renewal of our baptismal

promises.

Prayers of the Faithful (stand) We continue to stand for the prayers of the faithful. This is our

opportunity to bring our concerns as a community of faith to God.

These prayers include our concerns for the Church, the world,

including political policies and leaders, those in any form of need,

and the community. This is also a time to pray as a community for

those who have died, those who are ill, the newly married or born,

and other life passages. There is usually time at the end of these

prayers for silent personal prayers to be said, although some

smaller communities ask for people to contribute these personal

prayers out loud. There is a response after each prayer, which can

be designated for that Mass. The usual response, however, is

“Lord, hear our prayer.”

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST The Liturgy of the Eucharist is paired with the Liturgy of the

followers before his death. Our prayers over the bread and wine

echo the ancient blessings over bread and wine from the Jewish

tradition, blessings that are still spoken today. To be continued…
