The Austrian city of Linz refuses to be overawed by its two betterknown neighbours – Vienna andSalzburg.

The lively city was the 2009 European Capital of Culture, and includes a stateoftheart opera house, asparkling museum of the future, (possibly) the oldest cake in the world, and the famous Danube.

Here are six unmissable spots of the absorbing European destination.

Find a cafe for a slice of Linze torte. The city claims it's the world oldest cake – jam on apastry base, under a lattice crust

1) Cake walk

The Linz Card is one of the bestvalue European city cards, costing €15 for a day, or €25 for three. Itgives free entry to the main museums and unlimited use of public transport. Linz is compact and easy tonavigate.

Ride the tram from the main train station, through the heart of the old city on Landstrasse to theNibelungen Bridge over the Danube.

Then walk back and explore the great 13th Century Hauptplatz, the main square, cordoned with elegantbaroque buildings, and the 60ft Holy Trinity column, striking in white marble, as its centrepiece.

Old Linz is close at hand down side streets – look for Renaissance palaces with inner courtyards, and thehouse where Mozart wrote the Linz Symphony in four days.

Then find a cafe for a slice of Linze torte. The city claims it's the world oldest cake – jam on a pastrybase, under a lattice crust.

2) True blue

We looked down from the castle, over multicoloured rooftops, to the famous river, clean andunmistakably blue even on a grey day.

In Linz, the Danube is one of Europe's great watery highways. The early Celts settled here and gave itthe ancient name Lentos – 'on the bend of the river'. It morphed through the Roman 'Lentia' into Linz.

The riverside Lentos Art Museum, showing paintings by Klimt and Schiele, is one part of the city's 21stCentury cultural crescendo.

By day, the river bank is a place to stroll among large metal sculptures in the Donau park, andcontemplate epic adventures on foot and bike. The 200mile Danube longdistance cycle route and the300mile riverside walk, the Donausteig, pass through the city.

View of the litup Ars Electronica Center, which includes a section solely dedicated to 3Dprinting

3) Seeing the future

Most museums look to the past but Ars Electronica shatters that stereotype. It deals with the here andnow, and the future.

This absorbing place reflects the technological changes in the world, and where they might be taking us.One section looks at rapidly developing 3D printing – we held intricate metal objects that seem to belongin sciencefiction.

Another display area examines the way social media tracks us online, and how we might dodge itsembrace. For light relief, we took a 3D trip through the universe on an IMAX screen.

4) Opera star

For years little Linz had a vision. This city of about 200,000 people, the size of Luton or Warrington,wanted an opera house of its own.

Less committed citizens would have given up, but persistence paid off, and in 2013 the splendidMusiktheater am Volksgarten opened, funded largely with public money.

It was designed by British architect Terry Pawson, whose bold plan involved diverting a busy road tomake it more accessible.

This is one of Europe's most technologically advanced opera houses.

With budget flights from London, Linz is a good choice for a grand opera weekend, with tickets muchcheaper than in nearby Salzburg or Vienna.

Book online and see the view of the stage from your seat.

The New Cathedral, although built in the neoGothic style, and the second biggest inAustria, only looks old – it actually dates from 1924

5) Prized setting

Ask any architect and the spot they would choose for a new hotel in the heart of a historic city is right nextto the cathedral.

Normally such prized settings are too precious to be touched. So how did the Hotel am Domplatz getplanning permission?

Because the imposing New Cathedral, although built in the neoGothic style, and the second biggest inAustria, only looks old – it actually dates from 1924.

The Diocese of Linz commissioned the new hotel as part of a plan to tidy up the area. Designed to 'float'above the cathedral precinct, it complements rather than competes with its august neighbour.

Inside it's white, and light and airy, with a cosy spa at the top. In each bedroom there's a polished box, inwhich they suggest you leave a gift for the next guest.

Try dishes such as wokkoli, that's broccoli in a wok with ginger, chili, almonds andbasmati rice, while in Linz

6) Anyone for wokkoli?

'Eating and drinking should be fun,' proclaims the menu in Paul's, a new restaurant next to NewCathedral.

Chef Paul Gürtler wants his dishes to be 'tango on the plates'. Not sure how we measure that, but we hadto smile at the menu.

For instance there's wokkoli – that's broccoli in a wok with ginger, chili, almonds and basmati rice.

There are lots of unfussy culinary inventions, based on local ingredients, with Asian and South Americantwists.

Bread, such as 'sourdough with Tyrolean mountain clover', craft beer, coffee, tea, and even soda are allscrupulously sourced from local suppliers.
