THE JIM CROW LAWS ‘Jim Crow’ was a character in an old song who was

revived by a white comedian called ‘Daddy’ Rice. Rice used the character to make fun of Black

people and the way that they spoke.

The term ‘Jim Crow’ came to be used as an insult against black people.

In efforts to stop Black Americans from being equal, the southern states passed a series of laws known as ‘Jim Crow’ laws which discriminated against Blacks and made sure that they were segregated (treated unequally) from Whites.

Page 16: Sharecropping & KKK

Segregation and the Jim Crow LawsBlacks were excluded from all newspapers and from trading.

They gradually lost any jobs they had gained after the Civil War.

Whites owned the land, the police, the

government, the courtrooms, the law, the armed forces, and the press.

The political system also now denied Blacks the right to vote.

Murders were conducted in secret and in public by white men.

Blacks were harassed and abused, physically and verbally. These violent

acts became a part of their life.

Signs were put up to separate facilities saying "Whites only" and

"coloured" or "Negroes" appearing on parks, toilets, waiting rooms,

theatres, and water fountains.

Facilities for Whites were much better than those for Blacks.

SUCCESS CRITERIA:MODEL ANSWER A

Life improved for Black People after the end of slavery because they were free. They were able to do what they wanted and did not have to be slaves anymore.

They had their own small houses and could grow their own food. They had jobs.

They were not punished by the white masters. They were able to try to live normal lives…

Page 23: Sharecropping & KKK

SUCCESS CRITERIA:MODEL ANSWER B

Some aspects of life after slavery were better for Black people in America. The main thing was that they had achieved their freedom. However, this freedom came at a very high price.

Black people were without opportunities to get real jobs, and many former slaves chose to stay on the plantations working for the white men because they had nowhere else to go. They now had small huts of their own and could grow their own food through the sharecropping system. Some could go to their own schools and churches, however they did not have nearly the same freedoms as white people.

More seriously, they faced new dangers. Many white people, especially in the former slave-owning southern states, still viewed Black people as inferior and wanted to teach them a lesson. This meant that former slaves were subjected to violence from groups such as the white supremacist KKK. Some examples of this include…

When black people were slaves the white people had wanted to keep them alive to work and they were viewed as property. As “free” men, they were not needed for monetary gain anymore and some people wished them dead…

Page 24: Sharecropping & KKK

HUMAN OPINION LINE! The left side of the room is NO CHANGE! The right side of the room is LOTS OF CHANGE. All points in between are valid!

Stand in the place you feel reflects the lives of Black people after abolition.

You must be able to explain why you are standing where you are!

Share your ideas with your partner – can you think of FOUR things?

Pair with another pair – can you think of EIGHT things?
