A Message from the Lord Mayor of Dublin
Dear Friends Dublin is looking forward to welcoming you to our city for the Shared Histories, Smart Futures Summit on the 23
rd and 24
th of October, 2013.
The Shared Histories Smart Future Summit is a City-led summit that will bring together the Civic, Business, Education, Community and Cultural Leaders of Cities from Ireland and Britain. We will be focussing on both the shared history between our islands and the smart future we hope to achieve for our cities. Historically we have shared a common border, language and political, cultural and economic interaction. We have a history of our people living, working and studying in each other’s cities. It is especially appropriate that as we begin celebrating the centenary of significant historical events that we begin our Summit by recognising the historic interaction that has formed our cities. As Cities we face common challenges for our future including employment and economic development. The rapid development of technology provides us with the opportunity to forge smart cities for the future. Dublin will also provide a ―learn tour‖ on some of the significant developments and cultural activity in the city. With support from inspirational speakers participants will explore areas for city development around themes such as economic development, smart technologies, tourism and culture, education and sport. Dublin is the host city for the Cities of the Isles (COTI) in 2013. COTI is a network of Cities established to promote co-operation and understanding under the Anglo Irish Agreement with Edinburgh, Cardiff, Liverpool, Belfast, Glasgow and Dublin the member cities. It is a great pleasure to extend the invitation to other cities in Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, England and Wales to participate in the 2013 Dublin Summit. We look forward to welcoming you all here to Dublin and to looking at ways we can continue to work together into the future.

Shared Heritage; the shared literary and cultural connections between Ireland and the UK". - Location Printworks, Dublin Castle, 23rd & 24th October, 2013
Here we focus on four famous Irish writers with strong connections to London: Bram Stoker (Dracula), Oscar Wilde, WB Yeats and George Bernard Shaw. The narrative traces their lives and work in UK and includes quotations from their work. There is also a focus on the contemporary literary scene in Dublin (Dublin UNESCO City of Literature) and a mention of contemporary Irish writers with connections to London and vice versa.
The exhibition is the initiative of the Lord Mayor of Dublin and the content has been prepared by Dublin City Public Librar-ies. There are two film narrative strands (with voiceover) of approx 15 minutes each which will be shown on six screens as follows: Narrative1: Irish/UK Parliamentary history: This narrative opens with reference to the Queen's State visit
to Ireland . There follows a brief summary of English rule in
Ireland from Henry II's time. Then we focus on four politicians
with significant connections to London: Edmund Burke, Henry
Grattan, Daniel O'Connell and Charles Stewart Parnell
(overview of their life, careers etc). The piece concludes with
a quote from a speech by President McAleese at the State
dinner for the Queen

Shared Histories—Smart Futures is a City of the Isles (COTI) Event being held in Dublin. The Cities Summit is
designed to promote economic, civic and cultural co-operation between cities in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ire-
land and the Republic of Ireland. Cities are at the drivers of national economies and are the key to economic growth. In-
creasingly the global competition for investment, mobile talent, and trade links is between cities.
The two largest islands off the European Mainland sit strategically placed between Europe and the Americas. The
Islands have welcomed and fostered different cultural traditions, while sharing a common history forged by the movement
of people between the different parts of the islands. Their economies have for centuries been closely linked and there is a
long history of trade and business.
As the cities of these islands face the increasing challenges of competing in a global economy they can collaborate
to strengthen their ability to succeed. This Summit will explore how that collaboration can be done in smarter ways, by
building on the strengths of our people and traditions and by using the power of technology. This Summit provides an op-
portunity to extend the dialogue between cities in these islands beyond the original members of COTI. The original mem-
ber cities were Belfast, Cardiff, Dublin, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Liverpool. The invitation to participate in Shared Histo-
ries—Smart Futures in Dublin is extended to all the cities of England, Ireland (Republic) Ireland (North), Scotland and
Wales.
