The Resurrection of Our Lord Easter Day

Sunday, April 12, 2020 – 10:00 AM

AS WE GATHER On this day Jesus rose from death but did not simply return to heaven. First, His angelic messengers reminded the women at the tomb what He had said. And then our Lord appeared to several of His followers throughout the day (and forty days to follow) so that they would remember that He was truly alive. Now He reminds us through Word and Sacrament that He is alive and with us each day. When we let the troubles of this world overtake us, it is as if we are forgetting His gracious promises. But in fact, by grace for Jesus’ sake and our incorporation in the Body of Christ through Baptism, we are His new creation. Easter shouts that the past is forgiven and forgotten by God. Today is “The Day of Resurrection,” on which we remember, rejoice, and “raise the victory strain.” PRESERVICE MUSIC CALL TO WORSHIP Pastor: May the light of Christ, rising in glory, dispel the darkness of our hearts and

minds.

♫FESTIVAL HYMN “Jesus Christ Is Risen Today” LSB 456

OPENING SENTENCES Pastor: Alleluia! Christ is risen! People: He is risen indeed! Alleluia!

Pastor: We were buried with Christ by Baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father,

People: We too might walk in newness of life.

Pastor: If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

People: For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Pastor: On the cross Jesus said, “It is finished,” and on Easter our Father in heaven

acknowledged the sacrifice complete by raising our Savior from death. Forgiveness is available to all who call out to God in Jesus’ name. Let us therefore confess our sins.

Silence for reflection on the Word of God and our sinful condition.

Pastor: Heavenly Father, We confess that we have not walked in newness of life. We have failed to

love You with all that we are and have, and we have not always remembered the new life You bestowed on us in Baptism.

Lord Jesus, we confess that we have not always sought the things that are above. We have failed to love our neighbors with our thoughts, words, and deeds.

O Holy Spirit, we have not always relied on Your power to amend our sinful lives. Create in us clean hearts and renew a right spirit within us, for we call out to You in Jesus’ name.

Christ has paid for all our sins. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, You will not despise. As a called and ordained servant of Christ I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People: Amen.

SALUTATION Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY Pastor: Heavenly Father, on the cross Your Son finished the sacrifice to pay for all

our sins. We remember Your promises; we give thanks for His sacrifice; we pray that Your Holy Spirit will enliven us to live as Your forgiven children here in time and forever in eternity; through Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

People: Amen. OLD TESTAMENT Isaiah 65:17-25 17 “For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind. 18 But be glad and rejoice forever in that which I create; for behold, I create Jerusalem to be a joy, and her people to be a gladness. 19 I will re-joice in Jerusalem and be glad in my people; no more shall be heard in it the sound of weeping and the cry of distress. 20 No more shall there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not fill out his days, for the young man shall die a hundred years old, and the sinner a hundred years old shall be accursed. 21 They shall build houses and inhabit them; they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit. 22 They shall not build and another inhabit; they shall not plant and another eat; for like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be, and my chosen shall long enjoy the work of their hands. 23 They shall not labor in vain or bear children for calamity, for they shall be the offspring of the blessed of the Lord, and their descendants with them. 24 Before they call I will answer; while they are yet speaking I will hear. 25 The wolf and the lamb shall graze together; the lion shall eat straw like the ox, and dust shall be the serpent's food. They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain,” says the Lord.

EPISTLE 1 Corinthians 15:14–26 14 And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. 15 We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.

20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive. 23 But each in his own order: Christ the firstfruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ. 24 Then comes the end, when he delivers the kingdom to God the Father after destroying every rule and every authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death.

Reader: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. ♫HYMN OF RESURRECTION “Christ Is Risen, Christ Is Living” tune: Nettleton

3 Death has lost its old dominion, Let the world rejoice and shout! Christ, the firstborn of the living, Gives us life and leads us out. Let us thank our God, who causes Hope to spring up from the ground; Christ is risen, Christ is giving Life eternal, life profound.

1 Christ is risen, Christ is living, Dry your tears, be unafraid! Death and darkness could not hold Him, Nor the tomb in which He lay. Do not look among the dead for One who lives forevermore; Tell the world that Christ is risen, Make it known He goes before.

2 If the Lord had never risen, We’d have nothing to believe. But His promise can be trusted: “You will live, because I live.” As we share the death of Adam, So in Christ we live again; Death has lost its sting and terror, Christ the Lord has come to reign.

HOLY GOSPEL John 20:1-18 Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the twentieth chapter. People: Glory to You, O Lord.

Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” 3 So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. 4 Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus' head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself.8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes.

11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet.13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus.

15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’”18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.

EASTER CONFESSION OF FAITH

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, who sent His Son as my Savior to rise Easter morning.

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, died on Good Friday, rose again on Easter Morning to free me from the curse of sin and the sting of death and the power of the devil.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, who has brought me to faith in the Christ of Easter, and by whose continuous work in my heart I am ever led to be steadfast and unmovable, always abounding in the work of my resurrected Lord. Amen.

IN RESPONSE TO JESUS’ LOVE, AT GOOD SHEPHERD WE:

LOVE JESUS. LOVE GOD’S WORD. LOVE PEOPLE.The MISSION of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Elgin, Illinois is loving people into a living relationship with Jesus at home, in our community, and in our world. Our VISION is to see people alive in Christ; worshiping, learning, serving, caring, and reaching out to others in His name.

Lent is a 40-day season of preparation for Easter. Ash Wednesday begins our season of penitence and reflection. The word Lent comes from a middle English word “lente” meaning “spring.” For Christians, Lent is a time of “spring cleaning,” of facing up to our sinful selves and repenting before God’s wonderful throne of grace. It is also a time for the discipline of learning and growing in the faith. For many Christians this is a time marked by prayer, fasting and almsgiving. These acts of self-denial help to focus on Christ’s sacrifice as we ask God to “create a right spirit within us.” This year our Lenten midweek theme will be, “By His Wounds We Are Healed!” Our Lord and Savior suffered mortal wounds as punishment for the commandments broken by us. Yet, those very wounds are the means by which our sins are forgiven and we are made whole again. In our Lenten Midweek Worship, we will reflect on how the wounds of our sin affect our relationship with God and with others and how, through graceful healing our Lord restores us once more! Please pick up your copy of a Lenten devotional entitled “By His Wounds We Are Healed.” These daily devotions will supplement our Wednesday night meditations (one per family, please). They are located on the table near the church entry. You are welcome to join us for our Wednesday Lenten Meal served from 5:30pm -6:30pm in the Gathering Room.
