The K&S Corporation encourages all employees to create Social Clubs where they can voluntarily join and participate in activities and interests outside of work. The Social Clubs are run by the employees and form a committee who share responsibilities and ideas for up and coming events.

Currently there are 15 Social Clubs within the K&S Group. If you would like to participate in your local Social Club please go to the company intranet KASNET, Human Resources to locate a current list of Social Clubs and who to contact to get involved. If you can’t locate your site on the available list please call HR who can assist in how to set up a Social Club, including the framework to make it seamless and most of all enjoyable for everyone!!

We chatted to some of the Social Club employees around Australia and New Zealand to find the weird and wonderful events that have been organised in the past. It goes without saying K&S New Zealand’s attendance to a Hypnosis show & K&S Mount Gambier’s Halloween Party plus their Prom Dance & Supper night are all up there with the best!

contributed to charity. The Portland Duck Derby held annually in November, see the boys in regional Victoria working hard to make the K&S Corporate duck look its best. The Social Club purchases the duck entry fee of $200 and with much anticipation watch it race against 30 other corporate company ducks. The boys in Portland declare this event comparative in size and fame to the Melbourne Cup describing the atmosphere electric as the crowd cheers on their favourite duck! Welcome to the spring edition of the K&S Corporation newsletter for 2013. This newsletter will continue to be an important tool that we use to communicate what is happening within K&S Freighters, DTM Business Logistics, Regal Transport, K&S New Zealand and K&S Fuels.

The current economy is continuing to provide difficult trading conditions. On the 27th September 2013, we published a news release communicating the conditions on both the East and Western sea boarders of Australia. The Western Australian operations have seen a significant slowdown as a result of lower activity levels in the resources sector coupled with increased competition for available volumes. We will continue to drive costs down and evaluate potential opportunities for acquisition where it makes strategic sense.

Whilst the Australian economy slows down the K&S New Zealand business has experienced new growth where we have established several new partnerships with NZ Steel, Miraka and Timberlands. This is expected to deliver improved performance and contribution from our New Zealand operations.

Looking back we held a successful Health, Safety and Environment meeting at K&S Freighters Truganina depot, on the 10th October attended by the Executive team. Our current safety performance continues to improve which provided much discussion on how we can take safety to the next level.

I am pleased to advise you that K&S Corporation has announced a proposed significant expansion through a merger of its operations with those of another leading Australian-owned transport and logistics group, Scott Corporation Limited.

Just like K&S Corporation (K&S), Scott Corporation (SCC) is a national carrier listed on the Australian Securities Exchange and has a diverse range of operations across all Australian states and territories, including widespread recognition as a leader in the transport of bulk solids, liquids and explosives by rail, road and sea. The successful bringing together of the two companies will create a combined group revenue at more than $750 million.

As we near the end of 2013 and as the Christmas period is fast approaching, please take care on the roads and enjoy any planned time away from work. I personally would like to wish you and your families a Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year in 2014.

Greg Stevenson

Sequal Lumber is one of K&S New Zealand’s top 10 clients and is striving to become the most efficient timber producer in the country.Sequal’s CEO, David Turner, says the strong relationship formed with K&S over the past two years is helping the company achieve that goal.

David spent a decade working in the banking industry in Hong Kong and Singapore before returning home to New Zealand in February 2012. He had been a shareholder in Sequal Lumber since the company first began in 2008 and since taking over as CEO he has doubled throughput per hour, cut the company’s costs by 35 per cent and increased log recovery by six per cent.

Sequal Lumber is located in Kawerau, on the edge of the largest Radiata Pine plantation in the Southern Hemisphere. The sawmill specialises in producing dimensionally-cut timber for the furniture, construction, pallet and packaging industries.

Logistics account for one quarter of Sequal’s overall costs as 120,000m3 of lumber needs to be transported 90km to the Port of Tauranga each year for export to markets in Asia, Africa and the Middle East.

David says the wood processing business has been extremely difficult over the past five years and there is little room for error or excess in the system.

“In a low margin business, logistics can make or break deals. We have found in every facet of our business that K&S is prepared to work with us to understand our needs, to help us deliver to expectation and to reduce our costs.”

The partnership between the two companies began in December 2011 when K&S Mt Maunganui Branch Manager Graham Jennings queried why Sequal was using a variety of different carriers.

K&S was carrying Sequal’s chip a short distance to Norske Skog’s Kawerau paper mill but wasn’t involved in the timber side of the business.

Graham could see Sequal was struggling to co-ordinate its freight logistics and cut a deal to provide at least 12 dedicated truck and trailer units each day to help streamline the company’s operation.

However, when David took over as CEO a few months later, he was sceptical of giving his entire freight business to just one supplier but K&S’s reliability and quality of service won him over.

In February this year, Graham suggested Sequal move to a 24 hour, five

day a week freight operation to maximise efficiencies even further and played a key role in negotiations with the Port of Tauranga to make this to happen.

David says K&S has added value at Sequal in a number of different areas:

Safety, “K&S management prioritise worker safety and recognize the responsibilities we all share in creating a safe work place for our staff.”

Reliability, “Trucks are always on time and when extra trucks are required K&S will work hard to make sure they’re available. Nothing is ever a problem.”

Efficiency, “We have worked closely with K&S to minimize our logistics cost and K&S have delivered the appropriate truck, with the appropriate permits, to make this a reality. We also pressured our whole supply chain to further reduce logistics costs at the end of 2012 and K&S were instrumental in moving our dispatch to 24 hours so that we could achieve a $1.75 per m3 saving over our entire volume.”

Technology, “K&S has the necessary technology to make freight movements easily traceable for the whole supply chain. This makes for an effortless integration between our dispatch and our receiving agents at the Port of Tauranga, reducing costs for all parties.”

Partnership, “It is important for us that everyone involved in our business exhibits the spirit of partnership. You need key partners across the supply chain and K&S has presented themselves as an ideal partner.”

David says he is passionate about building a sustainable global business in New Zealand and his goal is to double Sequal’s throughput to 250,000m3 per annum by 2016.

Big opportunities lie ahead with the volume of utility grade logs set to triple in the next decade, and Sequal is investing heavily in new equipment and geothermally-powered kilns.

“We have a very strong focus on renewability. Our logs are all Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) certified as a renewable resource and we will be using renewable geothermal energy to dry them. K&S share this vision, and in recent discussions regarding our logistics strategy, K&S were able to present to me the emission impact of various strategies we were assessing.”

Both parties are keen to expand their relationship further in the near future.

Snapshot of K&S

in Australia and New Zealand

K&S FuelsPeter Sims,General Manager, tells us about his business

“K&S Fuels new unmanned card readers ensure customers have reliable around the clock refuelling at their fingertips”There has been a good start to the Cray fishing season for irrigation customers in South East of South Australia. Customers that normally irrigate by diesel driven centre pivots include dairy farmers, potato growers and farmers fattening lambs.

The rainfall for October has been well above average and will save farmers enormous costs on diesel, grain and hay, although it does not help our diesel sales. However, we need good seasons to assist our customers ability to pay us for their fuel.

Cray fishing season started 1st October 2013. K&S Fuels deliver diesel to the fishing ports at Port MacDonnell, Beachport, Southend and Cape Jaffa. Rough seas and inclement weather conditions have hindered the start of the season.

Currently K&S Fuels operate 26 unmanned, 24 hour card reader refuelling installations throughout Australia. All card transactions are processed electronically at our Mount Gambier office from a variety of sources and pricing structures that prevail in the fuel industry. All transaction information is integrated into our card system, along with prices, fuel grants, emission data, site information, card and account details. K&S Fuels’ internal & external customers can refuel 24 hours via their fuel card and security pin. They are situated in strategic sites and some in varied and harsh environments including retail, marine and transport depots to ensure reliable and secure refuelling of vehicles.

We supply to many types of customers including retail, commercial, farming, fishing and small business customers, along with K&S fleet vehicles. K&S Fuels also process card purchase information from BP, Shell and Caltex cards electronically from anywhere in Australia. We also arrange refuelling at many sites for K&S subcontractors carrying K&S loads.

We have recently installed self bunded containerised diesel refuelling systems at our Dardanup, Port Hedland and Newcastle depots, to ensure reliable high volume unmanned refuelling at the best possible price.

We also have installed 4 Caltex Ezyserve Outdoor Payment Terminals (OPT’s) that have the ability for customers to make fuel purchases via all K&S cards, external Caltex cards and most bank cards, unmanned and 24 hours.

Our fuel cartage business has increased recently. We continue to grow our customer base with cartage including Lubes, BioDiesel and Caltex Commercial Customers, mining sites, and Power Stations. We also assist DTM Business in linehaul bunkering of diesel to the large ships and other smaller bunkering jobs for the Port of Melbourne tug boats. K&S Fuels division delivers approximately 4 million litres per month to external customers in addition to our local requirements back into the South East of South Australia.

We recently delivered fuel for Caltex to help them with fuel supplies into Metro Service Stations whilst some Cootes Tankers were taken off the road.

In closing, I would like to thank all employees for their input in 2013. I wish all staff a safe Christmas and happy New Year in 2014.

K&S FreightersGraeme Wooller, Chief Operating Officer, gives an overview of his business

K&S New ZealandGreg Cochrane, General Manager, updates us on what’s happening in New Zealand

“Growing reputation and health and safety expertise delivers two big wins”Our New Zealand operation is rapidly expanding and we will embark on two new major contracts in the New Year.

We recently won the Timberlands Ltd woodchip tender and will soon begin trucking 300,000 tonnes out of Kaingaroa Forest, in the central North Island, to both the Kinleith and Kawerau pulp and paper mills.

We are currently looking to hire nine extra staff to help deliver on this five year contract. This win is a huge coup for K&S and our tertiary level Workplace Safety Management Practices (WSMP) accreditation helped put us well ahead of our competitors.

I’m also proud to announce we have won the New Zealand Steel contract at Glenbrook (owned by BlueScope) which also starts on 1st January 2014.

We will be transporting 250,000 tonnes of cold, galvanized and painted steel coils, along with heavy and light plate products, from Glenbrook’s steel mill south of Auckland, around the rest of the country.

Two new fulltime staff have just been recruited for this contract to manage the weigh bridge operation on-site. We will also be investing in specialised equipment to alleviate the need to climb above deck and 20 K&S staff have recently completed a two day training course on load restraint of steel products.

It’s rewarding to see our staff extend their knowledge and grow our company’s capabilities as a result.

Overall, we will be expanding our fleet by 10 units and our focus in the coming months is on recruitment and staff training so we are ready to hit the ground running in the New Year.

The new 58 tonne weight limit implemented by New Zealand Transport Agency this year has also worked to our advantage, allowing us to invest in nine axle configurations and work more efficiently.

K&S New Zealand’s five year strategic plan was to increase revenue by $10m and I’m delighted to report we have already hit that target thanks to our impressive health and safety record and positive recommendations from our customers.

There is a lot of optimism and confidence in our New Zealand workplace right now and our team’s great attitude will help us continue to provide top quality service to both new and existing customers.

“K&S awarded a major contract with BlueScope through tender process”The current economic climate has offered limited reason to celebrate of late, however good opportunities in the market place remain.

With hard work, strong client relationships and a reputation for providing excellent customer service, competitive rates and an outstanding safety record, the K&S team of knowledgeable and motivated employees continues to keep K&S Freighters at the forefront of transport and logistical companies within Australia.

These attributes resulted in the K&S Group being awarded a major contract to Darwin and Perth by Rail, for the transportation of BlueScope product.

Movements from Melbourne and Port Kembla to Darwin and Port Kembla to Perth were awarded to K&S Freighters through a competitive tender process with a commencement of freight movements in late April 2013.

Specialised Rail equipment of 20ft side door units and ancillary equipment were the chosen resource to transport heavy vertical and horizontal coil and plate movements on KT transi-flats.

As part of the transport procedure and success of this account, K&S Adelaide Freight Terminal team were intricately involved in establishing operational and logistical links. These links with NTFS (Northern Territory Freight Services) who combined with K&S, to successfully manage the movement transit through Adelaide to Darwin where the Rail operation control changes from Pacific National to Genesee and Wyoming Rail.

K&S Adelaide operations then manage the operational requirements and direction to NTFS who complete the Darwin delivery and the return management of our containers and ancillary equipment.

KPI (Key Performance Indicator) requirements to measure DIFOT (Delivered in-Full, On-Time) and service expectations by K&S Freighters are in place with a major focus on service, safety, product condition and on time deliveries. K&S continues to successfully meet KPI’s. Further contribution to this success comes from the K&S internal specialised freight system Panorama and ancillary equipment reporting process, which allows a clear understanding for the sending terminals and control of the freight movements and reporting requirements by the K&S Adelaide Freight Terminal to continually meet customer expectation.

The container and ancillary equipment team based at Enfield work closely with the terminals in maintaining equipment supplies throughout K&S which has increased productivity, cost control and equipment utilisation, freeing up resources allowing K&S Freighters to successfully compete for new and existing opportunities large and small across Australia.

Regal TransportGiles Everest, Executive General Manager, tells us his news from Western Australia

DTM Business LogisticsPaul Sarant, Executive General Manager, updates us on his area of the business

“Regal’s commitment to safety and exceeding customer expectations, is paying off”

A key highlight for the last three months was the award of the WesTrac Heavy Haulage contract. The team at Regal Heavy Haulage have been servicing WesTrac for many years but until now, we have been unable to secure a formal contract with them. WesTrac chose to put the work out to tender to a number of heavy haulage companies, but years of exceptional service by the Regal Heavy Haulage team ensured that WesTrac remained loyal to us. The win secures the WesTrac work for five years and gives us an extra 20% in WesTrac volume from their Bucyrus business.

Following the award of the Argyle contract in August, we successfully kicked off two days ahead of schedule. We were given 30 days to secure a depot in Kununurra, employ staff, allocate assets and set up Regal / Argyle interfacing IT systems. Feedback from Argyle has been excellent with them stating that their service levels have improved significantly since changing transport providers.

To further enhance our Kimberley footprint, we have also now secured a contract with the Kimberley Diamond Company near Derby. Regal lost this work to a competitor twelve months ago but service failures plus the growing focus on safety and compliance in WA lead to KDC returning to Regal. This contract gives us strategic volume into the Derby region.

It’s business as usual for the coming months, continue to focus on safety and customer service but also to ensure we are getting the most out of the business by driving efficiencies and looking for innovative ways of doing what we do. We hope to have something finalised with Dyno Nobel and Atlas Iron in the coming months as well.

Finally, we are coming to the end of the year and the Christmas / New Year festivities. This is often a time when we think about our plans for annual leave or what we are going to do to celebrate and we sometimes take our mind off the job. It is because of this that industry often sees a spike in safety related incidents that often result in an injury that can spoil Christmas for some and their families. I will be encouraging everyone to take a bit more time to think about the task at hand between now and the end of the year and again at the start of the New Year. We need everyone to think about their families and friends and while at work, we need to look out for our work mates to ensure everyone has the best possible Christmas and New Year.

“DTM ask for employees to concentrate and minimise distractions this festive season”For our business we are now entering into one of our busiest times of the year. As individuals no doubt we are also counting down to Christmas events and the holiday season. Combined we have a lot on our minds. There are numerous things we will be thinking about. In other words there are many distractions that could potentially result in the one second, of concentration lapse that results in a bad outcome. In the previous newsletter we discussed our safety performance, familiarity and the potential danger it plays in our welfare. There is another important factor that was the root of that article. It surfaces here again, the human factor. The weather has improved. The roads are dry. It’s not as dark in the morning or in the evenings. We are all in a better mood. So why is the lead into the busiest time of our year and the Christmas period so potentially dangerous for us? In one word – distractions! We forgot to add, our minds are thinking also of many other things and some events in the forthcoming weeks. Is this for real? Is it really an issue? Let’s explore some real examples of what has occurred in a second of concentration lapse. One historical example stands out. The Pipe Alpha Disaster. The Piper Alpha North Sea oil production platform began production in 1976. It was first an oil platform and then later was converted to gas production facility. An explosion and the resulting oil and gas fires destroyed it on 6 July 1988. In total 167 men were killed. There were only 61 survivors. A staggering amount. During routine maintenance a gas condensate safety valve was being overhauled. The open condensate pipe was temporarily sealed with a blind flange. This is because the work could not be completed that evening, the disc cover remained in place. It was hand-tightened only. An isolation permit was completed detailing that the pump was not ready and must not be switched on under any circumstances. It all sounds very normal and well controlled so far. Here comes the human factor – again! The shift change occurred. The dayshift engineer neglected to inform the night shift operator of the condition of the pump. There was conflicting paperwork in the control room. He was distracted! The shortened end of this tragedy. To continue processing gas it was decided to start the condensate pump. The conflicting paperwork was found. No one was aware that there was a missing piece of pipework and safety valve. The manager with several other simultaneous distractions, in a second of concentration lapse, assumed it was safe to start. Gas flowed through the pipeline, ignited and exploded. The fire control systems did not work. It was impossible to land a helicopter to evacuate personnel. It is estimated that the nearby platform Tartan’s gas line released 15-30 tonnes of gas every second, which immediately ignited. A second gas line ruptured ejecting millions of cubic feet of gas. The flames were over 300ft into the air. A tragic and extreme example of how one second of concentration lapse can result in a bad outcome. This is the human factor. So our take home message is simple. As the weather improves, and we get closer to Christmas and the holiday period, we all will have lots on our minds. Concentrate, minimise distractions and ensure you all remain safe. Unfortunately there are often no second chances!K&S In the thick of it

Everybody Safe - Every Day!

Sharing our roads in today’s environment is an ever increasing challenge. With urban growth on the rise and the ever increasing number of vehicles on a limited and in some cases poorly maintained road infrastructure, road respect is an important element if commuters are to arrive to their destinations safely. In conjunction with the Victorian Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and a select group of industry operators K&S have been involved in a recent variable speed study. The study is being lead by Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC).

K&S were initially approached by the Victorian Transport Association to assist with the study. Drivers were consulted in respect to the trials and with their input, K&S agreed to assist with project scope and actual vehicle speed trials.

The trials consisted of a number of elements, but not limited to: > Trial was voluntary and any driver could withdraw at any time.> Data was collected by an independent third party (MUARC) with

anonymous ID numbers.> Travel to / from Melbourne and Geelong.> Vehicles had GPS tracking devices installed during the trial period,

including Geo fencing of the Geelong freeway.> Cameras were installed on all K&S vehicles involved in the trial.

Fitment included:- first camera facing forwards, - second camera installed on the right hand driver mirror facing

rearwards, - third camera installed on the left hand driver mirror facing

rearwards, and - fourth camera installed on the rear of the b-trailer facing

rearwards. This item was installed on the suggestion of the K&S driver group

and supported by both TAC and MUARC.

> Trials ran for 22 weeks.- 11 weeks at normal speeds.- 11 weeks at normal and variable speeds.- Part of the trials incorporated signage on vehicles and part no

signage.> A total of four K&S b-doubles participated in the trials – the largest

number of vehicles in the study.

The aim of the project was to evaluate safety, environmental, productivity benefits and vehicle interaction from varying speed travel between different classes of vehicle configurations.

The last phase of the project - driver interviews and feedback has been completed, and we now await MUARC’s report on the study.

We would like to thank and congratulate the Geelong operations and driver team for participating in this study.

Hickory Group

The markets our customers compete in today are not just localised as in previous generations but global. So when a Melbourne based construction company manufactures a product for the Western Australian market they now compete against local and international businesses. The Hickory Group is a fourth generation family owned company that has evolved into one of Australia’s preeminent construction groups, and in recent years has developed prefabricated construction technology to deliver entire multi-unit buildings up to 50% faster than conventional construction methods. Their newest offer is “Sync” bathrooms, and the company quickly secured a contract to supply 350 of their Sync bathroom pods to new Midland Hospital development. A Sync pod is a pre constructed bathroom module that enables efficient building practises on site.

The project is to supply to the 307 bed St John of God Midland Public Hospital at the new Midland Health Campus that will deliver free care to the people of Perth’s north-eastern corridor and the Wheat belt from late 2015. It will be the first new hospital in the area in more than 50 years and construction is now underway.

Hickory Group posed K&S the question, ‘how can we pre construct our product and deliver across the country in a pristine condition and beat our competitors?’

The bathroom pod specifications measured in at 2250 x 2450 x 3050 high, weighing 1110kg per pod. While rail seemed the logical choice, the height of each Sync pod was above the regulations for rail so other options were road - cost restrictive, coastal sea - damage integrity issues, so the only cost effective option was rail.

To overcome these challenges, K&S initiated discussions with Pacific National Rail regarding the project. This was then followed up by on-site meetings with Hickory to confirm their key requirements.

Key requirements were:> Consistent flow of Sync pods to WA to ensure delivery

requirements were met.> Ensure load integrity is maintained - how do we restrain and not

damage when loading a rail base?> Can we get approval to rail units that are above regulated height

restrictions?

Pacific National (PN) in conjunction with K&S developed a “provisional load form” that detailed how the load was to be distributed, restrained, what specific wagon types, i.e. low profile wagons, what rail-bases could be loaded and finally the checks put in place to ensure the integrity of the load whilst in transit.

Pacific National presented this project together with a risk assessment to the Australian Rail & Track Corporation (ARTC) for consideration. The end result being that the ARTC granted approval for these loads to travel under a special “out of gauge” train notice – a win/win situation for all involved.

The problem solving and continued questioning of the logistic process, demonstrated the capability K&S has in designing a solution that initially looks unattainable. These skills are a part of the K&S culture and this project again highlights why Australian manufacturers view our business as innovative.

I would like to personally thank all involved in the process from K&S Freighters, Roland Marchetti, Ashley Carnell, Paul Curmi and Ken Newton. Hickory Group’s Eddie Pallotta and Brett Lynn plus Arthur Kamberis from Pacific National.

Roland Marchetti, K&S Business Development Manager describes our service and capabilities, “What sets us apart from other transport companies is our strong relationship and consultative approach to customers and industry bodies alike, to provide quality solutions to what is thought to be impossible, possible”.

Simon Hine, Executive General Manager, Business Development shares how K&S was able to overcome logistical challenges providing the best result for Hickory Group

Meet our People

Angela Keenihan Administration Assistant

Business/department you work for? DTM Business Logistics – South Australia

Years with K&S? 5 years

What’s your typical day like? My typical day starts at 6:30am each morning, opening up the office. Once I turn on my computer it all begins. The DTM drivers come in with their paper work from the previous day so that I can start my data entry. I ensure all the drivers have completed their paper work correctly, as I can be very fussy about that. Each day is a challenge at DTM as there is always something different happening e.g. I have phone calls coming in from customers that keep me on my toes - I like to help them out as much as I can. I really enjoy my job and look forward to going to work as we are a good team and work well together. The support I have from the staff is amazing, nothing is too much trouble for anyone, which is why I enjoy what I do.

What attracted you to work for K&S? I had heard that it was a good company to work for. This was shown when my Manager, David Del Corso

passed away (never to be forgotten), I received a lot of support from colleagues and managers at DTM.

What do you do in your spare time? Spending time with my family, I have 3 grandchildren and one more on the way.

If you were stranded on a deserted island who is the one person you would want with you and why? I would choose my daughter Becky (Rebecca) as we are close as mother and daughter and we share a lot in common.

If you won the lottery what is the first thing you would buy? I would buy a house, a new car and help my family out.

Favourite quote or motto in life? My favourite quote is “Whatever”.

Mick Block Linehaul Driver

Business/department you work for? K&S Freighters - Linehaul.

Years with K&S? I have worked for K&S Freighters for 20 years, I first started in February 1993 as a local driver for two years before transferring to linehaul.

What’s your typical day like? I start my week on a Sunday one week and the following week on a Monday. When I first get into the Truganina depot my first stop is the canteen for a cup of coffee. A pre loader from Melbourne would have driven my truck to get loaded in Ballarat with Laminex and then they return the truck to me loaded and ready for my trip to Sydney. It is approximately 900km one way from Melbourne to Sydney and takes approximately 11hours, I drop off the Laminex load at Prospect, a suburb of NSW where I unload and then pick up Aluminium from Yennora to return to Melbourne. I do 4 trips one week and 6 the next.

What attracted you to work for K&S? Before K&S I was helping a subby out doing general freight at the time in Ballarat. The subby was working for K&S Freighters. He suggested I go

for a job with K&S direct and I knew one of the bosses at the time who thought K&S Freighters was a good place to work.

What do you do in your spare time? I like to do a bit of gardening at home and like to slip a few bob into the pokies here and there.

If you were stranded on a deserted island who is the one person you would want with you and why? Megan Gale, she’s a bit of an alrighty.

If you won the lottery what is the first thing you would buy? I’d buy a red Ferrari.

Favourite quote or motto in life? Just simply “Enjoy Life”!!

Fleet & Industry News

K&S Rail Movements Brave the Weather Elements of Our Sunburnt CountryOver its proud 68 year history K&S Freighters has strived to achieve and set itself ahead of the pack in innovation of Transport and Logistics by Road, Rail and Sea. Responding to the ever growing demand to get materials to the mining industry in North West WA, K&S Freighters has established a Project Services Business Unit in Perth with the role of supporting land side logistics services in this region.

The integrated service K&S supplies to Australia’s “far horizons” enables our customers to fulfil this demand.

A major Sydney based roofing customer required to supply roofing and panels to the Pilbara region in WA. K&S Freighters Sydney Rail collect the product from the customer on specialised rail flat rack equipment, then prepare the loads for transit back at Enfield to lodge at Pacific National Rail Terminal.

The load travels four thousand odd kilometres across the “opal-hearted country” until destination is reached and collected by our Perth Rail operations to be transferred to the K&S Perth Depot in preparation for collection by our Regal Transport Company.

The load continues in a Road Train configuration on the journey north to its final destination, a further sixteen hundred kilometres to the Pilbara Region. Here the complexity continues with this fragile time sensitive freight as our trucks must meet waiting teams of builders and heavy crane equipment which is on standby to off load at the project site.

If trains do not meet expected time of arrival and our road trucks do not meet the planned schedule it could be costly, therefore both operations must have concise planning to prevent any service failure. K&S and its diverse range of support Companies such as Regal Transport, allow K&S the opportunity to stay in control from start to finish, a one stop shop with track & traceability at all times.

A very simple task set in motion one might say, however behind the scenes, the K&S Team are dealing with the elements and challenges, this a “sunburnt country, a land of sweeping plains, of ragged mountain ranges, of droughts and flooding rains”. This can come into play at a moment’s notice and are required to be overcome. As can be seen in the first two months of 2013 where, Australia released “her beauty and her terror” closing the rail corridor with flooding from far North Queensland to Northern New South Wales. Cyclones hit from East to West where ‘Rusty’ made his mark plus fires across the Western State.

New addition to the Regal Heavy Haulage Family

The elements that provide equally unique and hard challenges from the train derailments at Port Augusta SA, Katherine NT and all the way to Rockhampton QLD, to equipment and gantry failure, all in a day’s work for the K&S team to complete our customers deliveries.

Successfully dealing in both regular and complicated logistics operations highlights why K&S Freighters, is admired as an innovator in transport logistics and a leader in the Transport Industry.

Sebastian Hill General Manager – Rail

New Additions to the Regal Heavy Haulage family!Regal Transport Heavy Haulage has taken delivery of its two new 11 line platforms built by Drake Trailers in Brisbane and two new tri drive Western Star prime movers, each rated to a “gross combination mass” of 265 tonne. The two new additions to the Regal Heavy Haulage fleet have a capacity to transport a legal payload of 185 tonne on public roads.

Heavy Haulage can now legally transport just over 200 tonne on public roads when combining these trailers with current assets. This will be a great advantage to Regal Heavy Haulage customers with the growing demand to mobilise mining and resources equipment in more complete forms, cutting down on build times and costly down time.

Our current fleet also includes five Drake swing wing low loaders with an on road capacity of 98 tonne and seven spread axle quad low loaders with an on road capacity of 48 tonne.

Regal Transport’s Heavy Haulage fleet has been developed directly in line with our clients requirements, combined with services offered by Regal Transport’s other divisions, Regal Transport can accommodate any transport requirements required in the resources sector.

Around the Traps!

Chris Bright, Company Secretary and General Counsel based in Adelaide, fills us in on the importance of the legal department.

In both of my roles as Company Secretary and General Counsel, what gives me greatest satisfaction is being involved in the key decision making processes for K&S as we all strive to maintain and grow what is a very successful company. And while the legal and Company Secretarial work is not exactly ‘glamorous’, it gives me an excellent opportunity to work with a lot of great people throughout K&S. Without those great people, I doubt that K&S would have enjoyed the successes that it historically has and I also expect that many of us would not have stayed for so long.

The Legal Department is a small team consisting of Gillman based lawyer, Julie Holzberger and me. I have been at K&S since 2002 and Julie has worked with me since 2007. A key benefit of having a stable team in the Legal Department has been the development of a deep understanding of the competitive environment in which K&S operates and the key and evolving challenges that the business faces.

The primary aim of the Legal Department is to assist K&S to achieve its strategic and commercial goals in a manner that complies with all relevant laws. My priority is to ensure that the Legal Department is involved in all key business decisions at an early stage and my focus is to be an ‘enabler’ rather than a ‘road block’ (something which we achieve with varying degrees of success!).

Key areas that the Legal Department gets involved in include customer and supplier contracts, property arrangements, disputes, acquisitions, and regulatory compliance.

The legal function is an integral part of risk management for the company and while our primary role is to identify and advise the business about legal risks relevant to an outcome that K&S wants to achieve, our aim is also to contribute to commercial solutions. It comes as no surprise that the best results are generally achieved when there is a high degree of buy in and interaction between the business (our ‘client’) and the Legal Department.

The recently announced intention of K&S to merge with ASX listed Scott Corporation Limited by way of an off-market takeover bid has been taking up a lot of my time. This is an exciting project and the proposed merger will expand the scope and scale of our business. This transaction involves a lot of legal complexity and I am enjoying the challenge.

The other ‘hat’ I wear is as Company Secretary. The Company Secretary is responsible for assisting the board effectively to discharge their duties as Directors. Our Directors have over-sight of the business and operations of K&S ultimately for the benefit of all shareholders.

My strong view is that K&S’ longevity and prosperity are dependent upon the company having in place effective and transparent governance systems to ensure that we conduct our business ethically and in compliance with applicable laws, regulations and community standards. If we do not maintain the highest governance standards, ultimately we will not provide a compelling or sustainable value proposition to our employees, our customers or our shareholders.

The Company Secretary is responsible for a raft of compliance functions under the Corporations Act, as well as under a number of other pieces of legislation. As K&S is listed on the Australian Securities Exchange, there are also a number of company secretarial obligations that come with this, including ensuring that at all times investors are in possession of all material or price sensitive information in relation to K&S.

In my role as Company Secretary I work very closely with Bryan Walsh, Michelle Nicholls and the administration team at Mount Gambier to ensure that our directors and shareholders have available timely and accurate information in relation to K&S’ business and operations. Key milestones that we work towards each year are the release of half year and full year financial accounts to the market, the annual report and our annual general meeting for shareholders.

DTM Business Logistics, Defensive Driving Training Initiative kicks off in Victoria.CTM Training Solutions Compliance Manager, Richard Skiba and General Manager, Klausch Schmidt met with Dennis Baker, Victorian State Manager DTM and Human Resources to establish a training program that would provide DTM heavy vehicle drivers a refresher in safety and what to do in an accident or emergency. The training’s intention is to validate the safety of drivers with the ultimate goal of keeping everyone safe. The program was linked to nationally recognised training, utilising units of competency from the TLI31210 Certificate III in Driving Operations Qualification. All participants who successfully completed the program gained a statement of attainment for the following units: TLIF2006A Apply accident-emergency procedures and TLIC1051A Operate commercial vehicle. The program provided refresher and gap training in defensive driving strategies and techniques to heavy vehicle drivers and developed accident or incident management skills. Course content included roll-over prevention, mirror use, effective driving techniques, lane changing, breakdown processes and emergency management. The program also includes a practical drive assessment which takes about 30 minutes per driver. The training has been delivered on Saturdays from 8am to 4pm and consists of a theory component with written assessments. CTM trainers Paul Muscara and Eleasha Anderson said the level of input and enthusiasm from the drivers has been fantastic and they have enjoyed the training with DTM. Paul, who is a Vic Roads Tester for CTM Drive in Victoria, stated “going out on the road with these guys and putting them through an observation session similar to a licence test, has been eye opening as the level of skill demonstrated is high, which is refreshing”. The initial group of drivers undertaking this training are the dangerous goods drivers delivering gasses both in cylinder and bulk with the objective to progressively roll training to all other contracted states. Dennis Baker from DTM acknowledges that their drivers are the face of the company and appreciates the need to give the drivers the tools and knowledge to not only work effectively, but also to keep themselves and the general public safe.CTM Training Solutions are a Nationally Registered Training Organisation that specialises in Heavy Vehicle Licensing and High Risk Work Licensing. The partnership between CTM & K&S will provide training solutions to ensure a safe workplace for the K&S Corporation.

Linehaul pitch together to help injured work mate!

K&S Linehaul Driver, Peter Rodwell has recently been off work due to a work related injury. Unfortunately the nature of his injury means a slow recovery and in the mean time he is not able to complete all his routine tasks on and around the farm. Amongst all of this Peter still has a positive approach to recovery, this has a lot to do with the help of his fellow team mates past and present and support provided within K&S.

Brian Gorey retired in April this year from his role as Linehaul Driver based in QLD, was first on the scene parking up his caravan in the backyard for a week to help out. Soon to follow was Michael Nelson Linehaul Driver SA and Roy Lott retired in June last year in his role of Linehaul Driver based in Victoria, both travelling over 4 hours to pitch in for an old mate.

Peter’s 380 hectare property was in need of some attention, the boys were able to focus on the 5 acres surrounding his home trimming hedges and fixing fences. Retired Roy Lott not the young whipper snapper he once was, opted for the less physical ride on mower to help out his good mate. Good on ya’ Roy!

With a week of hard work there was bound to be a close encounter, Michael Nelson had forgotten the golden rule ‘don’t touch the electric fence’ and nearly blew his socks off!

Peter says, “I’m really grateful to them for the assistance they gave me, that just goes to show the old school mateship. I couldn’t believe it, they drove over 4 hours to come and stay with me to help out. I can’t believe how much support I have been given from my work mates. Barry Brooker, Linehaul Driver from VIC got my gear from the truck and drove out to Benalla to return it to me. Frank Castle who retired in December 2011 from his role as QLD Fleet Controller is arranging to come down soon and help out too. I just want them all to get a special mention for their generosity”.

We wish you all the best for a speedy recovery Peter!!

Glenn Searle - An Everyday Hero

On 9 May around 4.20 am, Glenn a driver for K&S Freighters New Zealand was heading to the Mount with passenger Doug. At the intersection of the Old Te Aroha Road, Glenn saw large flames leaping higher than the surrounding trees. He was sure no-one would deliberately have such a large fire that close to

the buildings.Quickly he turned the truck & trailer around and headed back to the driveway to assist. On getting to the house, he saw that a jeep parked close by to the garage was on fire, and the flames were close to two large gas cylinders off to the side of the shed... this was a cause for great concern. Glenn said “if those had gone off, he would have been eating his lunch in the Kaimai’s”! For the Aussies the Kaimai’s are a close mountain range!!

Glenn sets the scene, “it is such a strange feeling, stumbling around someone’s yard in the dark, hoping you are not going to fall into a river which I could hear or trip on something”.

After banging on the door and windows to wake the occupants of the house, Glenn was able to use a fire extinguisher from the truck to put out a bit of the fire until the fire brigade duly arrived.

Chris Bungard (Bungy) the occupant of the house, who happens to have a radio show on a Saturday morning for the Fishing enthusiasts, rang K&S to express his thanks for Glenn.

Chris spoke very highly of Glenn, and was so impressed that Glenn recognised that the fire looked out of place where it was, so close to where the home is and took the time to turn that big rig around and come back when most others may have kept on going.

Chris said he was just ‘rapt’ that Glenn took the trouble and made it his business to go and look.

Chris gave K&S and Glenn a ‘plug’ on his radio show - the Fishing Show, and he recommends that K&S put Glenn forward for a new Kenworth!

Indigenous Employment Program Success!

Patrick Pepper

K&S continues the pursuit, to close the gap in unemployment for Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander Australians through our successful (IEP) Indigenous Employment Program.

Patrick Pepper is the first trades Apprentice to join K&S Freighters through the Indigenous Employment Program in the role of Apprentice Welder – Fabricator.

Patrick started working in the K&S Victorian Workshop in July 2012 and has already successfully completed Stage 1 of his study course in Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade. Prior to joining K&S Freighters, Patrick Pepper was a labourer and a senior operator at a timber yard

At K&S, his current day to day tasks are to complete repairs and on-going maintenance to both trailers and containers. “I have obtained new skills with K&S

Freighters such as welding, oxy operation, sheet metal work, fabrication and recently got my forklift license.”

Patrick thoroughly enjoys his role, “What I like most about the company is the people and learning new things. I have completed my first year and I’m very interested in TIG Welding.”

Barry Watterson, VIC Maintenance Manager is very positive about Patrick’s future with K&S, “When Patrick arrived he had no experience in welding and as part of the Apprenticeship training and on-going support of K&S employees, there is a significant improvement in his capabilities and skill set. To put things in perspective, Patrick is able to look and interpret drawings, measuring material to the right size for welding.”

We wish you all the best for your second year of the Apprenticeship Patrick.
