COMMODORE’S REPORT
Sunset at Denham
Luke
shows off
his Black
Snapper
I don’t consider myself a superstitious person but I have seen far too many incidences of the tasty yellow
fruit spoiling many a fishing holiday.
Now there are the doubters that will throw this back at you. Then there are those that do not take the chance
because they have seen the result of what happens when you test the theory. On trips I have seen rods break,
reels give up the ghost, GPS units fail to function, outboard motors blow up, wheels come off trailers, tyres
and bearings fall apart to name a few.
I am so convinced that there is something to this myth and I don’t think it is just boat trips but fishing trips in
general. My usual fishing buddies agree.
The weekend just past we went down to Bluff Creek for a trip with some fellow members. There were quite
a few things that started to happen. In a phone conversation with my wife I was telling her of some of the
events. Her first reaction was who took the bananas. She is not a fisher person but knows the consequences
of having bananas on a trip. Got me thinking - that comment. I believed that there were no bananas in our
unit so I queried the other crews in the adjacent unit. BINGO not only was there some but they had near on
bunches of them. We were shocked!
What also shocked me when someone in our unit who will remain anonymous won’t you Sharon decided to
bring along breakfast juice which she did not realise contained bananas. Someone who knows about this was
caught so easy. I think it is pertinent at this point in time to point out that nothing had happened to any of
those in our unit until the juice was opened.
The others thought we were a tad silly for mentioning this, but were
we really that silly. Let’s consider the events that this folklore threw
at us, this weekend.
There was a distinct lack of fish, one of the vehicles put the fan into
his radiator, another vehicle lost a personalised number plate, another
lost an internal section of the mud guard and a rod broke on the first
cast. These nasty little yellow critters have a lot to answer for I
reckon. One of the crew even went as far as blaming their presence
for his bad flatulence attack we all had to suffer.
Check out the hood ornament on the Nissan, talk about tempting fate.
No wonder you needed a new radiator.
Another member came down and camped on the beach and had no contact with the camp. No consequences
there. Doubt if you will, but do you want to take the chance. Next time leave the bananas home and see if
you have an enjoyable break and catch plenty of fish.
On completely different note I hope we get to see you on the opening day for the refurbishment June 22.
Please ensure you advise the office if you are coming so we can cater for those coming.
Regards
Ray Porter

Social Up-date
What excitement at the club with the renovations finished and the club looking new
inside. What a lick and spit can do to make an area come up great.
That brings me to the opening day planned for 22nd of June followed by New
Members night. Why not come down to the club and participate in the opening celebrations and tell
us what you think. You will be surprised. Once celebrations are over we will go straight into
welcoming new members, so why not stay and pass on any valuable information to do with fishing
etc. For catering purposes please advise the office at the club.
Once again we will be holding our Christmas in July and this will be catered for. Whilst enjoying a
scrumptious meal you will be entertained by Creedence Clearwater Revival tribute group “Proud
Mary”. Unfortunately we will have to increase the price this year to $50 per head. Once again please
ring the office if you would like to come along to this entertaining night.
The Commodore’s Ball will be held the first Saturday in August. So why not get a group together or
just come and we can put you on a table with others. This is always a great night so please book early
so you aren’t disappointed.
Members if you are attending functions and you have to rsvp for catering purposes please do so, well
in advance. Caterers need to know numbers a week or so prior to the function happening.

Next Competition:
The June competition will be held on Saturday or Sunday 8th or 9th June.
For those interested, the fishing hours are from Midnight on Friday to 2 pm on Sunday. The competition will be
judged on a points score based on the fish species and the length of the fish taken or released.
At least one person from each participating boat needs to attend the official weigh in at 2 pm on the Sunday of the
competition. Catch and release sheets need to be provided to the Weigh Master or his representative at that time in
order for the scores to count in the competition.
Next Fishing Group Meeting:
The next Fishing Group Meeting will be held on Monday 17th June 7.30 pm at the Club. There are no formal
application processes for club members – just show up on the day and you are one of us.
Shark Bay 2013 Wow!! What an exciting fishing expedition we had. Fish Fingers set off at 4am on Friday the 19th April
we arrived in Shark Bay late that afternoon, along with our fellow fisho’s the crew from Majek,
Extreme Crowd and Team PP.
Although the winds were up Saturday it was a good day to get out and put our fishing gear to the test.
So we all set off about 8.00am from Monkey Mia. Even though there was a wind chop it fished well
good size Black Snapper, Estuary Cod, Mackerel and the occasional North-West Blowfish were
caught by all. As we were all having fun and enjoying ourselves, the rest of our fellow fisho’s Storm
Boy, Rusty Dax, EJ845, Gunna were arriving and settling in and getting ready for day one of our
Shark Bay Bingo Competition.
Day 1 Sunday the winds were stronger but we got out once again from Monkey Mia and kept radio
contact with the fleet throughout the day with updates on what type or size fish were being caught,
kept us all entertained. The winds did eventually drop which made it a little easier on the body and
fishing. Everyone managed to get their fair share and variety of fish for the day.
Day 2 Monday with the winds still up it didn’t deter us and we set off once again and as like the
previous days the winds eventually dropped which made for another good day of fishing. A gathering
that night took place at Majek’s house and the boys exchanged ideas and information with the odd
beer or two.
Day 3 Tuesday the winds were improving and the expression Stop The Bus came into play. With
Sharks and North-West Blowfish the main agenda it was refreshing to hear fish- on by one of our
juniors in the group Ryan- man who pulled in a large cod and announced I Stopped The Bus!! With
that prize catch under his belt he went on and out fished the rest of the crew on Fish Fingers. That
evening the group all got together for a BBQ where we met everyone face to face some for the first
time it was a great way to catch up and share stories.

Ryan’s Herring
Mike’s Herring
Day 4 Wednesday it was perfect the water was like glass making it easy to reach the fishing
grounds and continue to complete the last day of our Bingo Competition.
Tuna were jumping and we threw out a lure and low and behold Hayden another junior of our
group hooked up and managed to pull in a Long Tail Tuna measuring over 1 metre long and
weighing over 10kgs on an 8kg line well done a huge effort.
Drifting was the way to go with no wind we were able to cover some magnificent ground which
produced well. Rankin and Estuary Cod, Pink and Black Snapper, Mackerel and Golden Trevally
were caught throughout all the crews that day.
Fisheries Inspectors were waiting to greet all that arrived back at the boat ramp late that afternoon
and as the CPBA fishing crews follow the fishing regulations religiously we got the all clear.
Day 5 Thursday was rest day for some but others headed out at dawn to Turtle Bay. The 2 ½ hour
drive to the bay turned out not to be a very productive trip but although battling sharks most of the
day and broke a fishing rod it was an adventure and a bit of fun. That night
the group headed out for dinner and the winner of the competition was
announced. It was a 3 way draw the tie breaker being a 1cm bigger Black
Snapper and the prize of $70 was awarded to Team PP who generously
donated it to the RSL of Shark Bay in
honour of ANZAC day. The night ended
as we said farewell to those heading
home the next day.
For the remainder of the group Friday fishing turned out to be
extremely productive with good size Pink Snapper caught
measuring over 67cm what a great way to finish a fantastic trip.
It was great meeting new friends and be able to help each other
out we hope everyone had a good time and enjoyed the
experience as much as we did.
Thank you to all that shared in the Shark Bay Fishing
Trip for 2013 hope to see you all again next time.

Mulloway Cutlets Baked with Lemon & RosemaryMulloway Cutlets Baked with Lemon & RosemaryMulloway Cutlets Baked with Lemon & Rosemary
Cutlets, a cross-section of whole fish cut through the backbone leaving the bone in, are a nice change from fillets and steaks. The
full flavoured rosemary and lemon topping marries well with mulloway’s distinctive flavour.
Serves 4
½ cup extra virgin olive oil
4 large potatoes, peeled and cut into bite-sized chunks
4 x 180g mulloway cutlets
Salt flakes and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
1 tablespoon finely chopped rosemary leaves
1 tablespoon finely grated lemon zest
1 clove garlic, crushed
Green salad, to serve
Preheat oven to 200ºC.
Pour half the olive oil into a baking dish and place in oven. Dry potatoes well. When oil is hot, remove dish, add potatoes, stir well
to coat and return to oven. Turn potatoes occasionally.
After 40 minutes, add half the remaining oil to a second baking dish and place it in the oven to heat.
Sprinkle the cutlets liberally with salt and pepper.
Combine rosemary, lemon zest and garlic.
Remove empty baking dish from oven, arrange cutlets in a single layer. Scatter rosemary mixture over the fish and drizzle with
remaining olive oil. Place in the oven and cook for 12-15 minutes, until flesh comes away from the bone easily when tested with a
fork.
Remove fish and potatoes from oven and serve with a green salad.
Alternative Species: Blue-eye trevalla, salmon, snapper, Spanish mackerel, yellowtail kingfish.
