You, my dear friend Sharon Brown, are a fabulous human being. You are fiercely independent and outspoken AND have one of the kindest, thoughtful hearts I have ever known—which you would like to be kept behind the scenes, but we have found you out. As a coworker you were always there to lend a hand at the drop of a hat or a mere mention of a need. You always looked out for the underdog, whether it was a needy family, homeless student, struggling learner or any human being for that matter. Cooking. Your cooking was outstanding...as the extra ten pounds I gained after coming to LSP can attest! I remenber the teas you put on, all the fabulous leftovers you brought to the office (thank you Jim too)! Oh, your banana cream pie was delicious...oh, and the curried chicken salad...and the scones...I guess I could go on and on! Generosity. Your generosity is above and beyond anyone I have ever known, whether we gathered food for the food bank (which was your idea) or others. No one gave more food or money than you. When we collected for a family for Christmas, who was always at the front of the line giving? Sharon Brown, even though you and your family had adopted a family of your own for Christmas. What an organizer you were for those in need. Humbleness. I remember one time we were talking about Battle Ground’s float for the Rose Parade and you quietly mentioned working on them in the past and it came out that you had been Battle Ground’s Citizen of the Year, along with your peach, Jim Brown. Although I never fully grasped all that you had done to be bestowed this award, it must have been much more than float building! You were part of what made Battle Ground what it is today! Caring. You, my dear have deep caring for human kind. You are fiercely protective of those you love, whether it be family or friends, and even unknown people in need. I can remember one time someone did something that really hurt my feelings, and you were ready to drive up to Amboy and really set them straight! You believed in me and told me I could do anything, and I believed you because you were Sharon Brown, and what you said went. If anything positive or negative happened to one of yours, you were always ready with a card or celebration plan. You were so protective of the grant funds you were given to manage, and at all costs, would not allow for the “rape” of the grant. These are things I saw at work, but I know that you carried that same deep caring into all aspects of your life, as has been evident every time I come to see you. There are more and more people stopping by whose lives had been touched by you. As you go to the next world, please keep an eye on all of us. We will continue to need you in our lives. We will remember all you have done for us and you will remain a role model for us even as we miss you terribly. Sharon Lee Brown passed peacefully on Sat., Aug. 4, 2012 after a long courageous battle with Lymphoma. Sharon was born Sept. 17, 1946 in Longview, WA, to Robert “Gene” and Jeanie Patterson. The family moved to the Battle Ground area where she lived most of her life. Sharon graduated from Battle Ground High School in 1965 and went on to graduate with honors earning an AA at Clark College. She married the love of her life, Jim Brown, in September 1969, and celebrated the birth of their son, Jim, in 1973. Sharon worked for the Battle Ground schools for 30-plus years in Learning Support until retiring in the fall of 2010. Although working full time, she always had time to volunteer with a number of community organizations. Sharon enjoyed working with the Fort Vancouver Fourth of July Committee, the Battle Ground Rose Float Committee, numerous Battle Ground School District activities, the Clark County Food Bank and many others. In 1986 Sharon and Jim were honored with the Battle Ground Citizens of the Year award for all they had done for the community. Sharon enjoyed gardening, traveling, cooking, going to the beach, walking and spending time with family and friends. Sharon is preceded in death by her mother, Jeanie Patterson and father-in-law J.D. Brown. She is survived by her husband Jim, son and daughter-in-law Jim and Genevieve, granddaughter Victoria, father Robert “Gene” Patterson and special friend Peggy Venus, all of Battle Ground, siblings; Robert and Linda Patterson of Vancouver, Dan and Carla Patterson of Gresham, Roger and Debbie Patterson of Brush Prairie, mother-in-law Mildred Brown of Battle Ground, brother and sister-in-law Larry and Carol Brown of McMinnville, 10 nieces and nephews, five great- nieces and nephews, and countless other family and friends. Sharon was truly an amazing woman always sharing her time and love with people who knew her, and those who didn’t. She will be missed greatly by all who knew her. Services will be held at Landmark Christian Church in Battle Ground on August 20 at 2 p.m. followed by a gathering of friends and family at Jim and Sharon’s home from 3-5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Ray Hickey Hospice House in Vancouver.
