ightsSNOC offers you the only landscape lighting system that

lets light fixtures slide up the mounting stem as flowers and plants grow. The stem also allows you to mount and orient the first lighting fixture horizontally over, say, a flower bed. Add a second unit to the same stem but oriented vertically to illuminate a wall or the side of a bush. A third unit, perhaps a directional spot type, may be added to illuminate the crown of a mature tree. Add a fourth fixture if you wish.

Low profile lights are usually mounted on the ground and often concealed behind small plants. Their generous horizontal illumination trickles softly through thefoliage, thus creating some truly spectacular effects while the source itself stays hidden from view.

Some fixtures can easily be adapted with lampholders and optics to accept other types of light sources such as halogen and xenon lamps.

LIGHTING

TECHNIQUES

_____________www.snoc.net

36

The best garden lighting layouts usually take advan-tage of a number of lighting techniques commonly asso-ciated with outdoor lighting.

For example, we can illuminate the same tree in severalways, each creating a different lighting effect. The spot fixtures shown on pages 22 to 29 designed for use with halogen directional lamps are by far your best tools tofashion many of those special effects.

Some of the more popular techniques are described briefly in the following pages and they may be useful in plan-ning your layout. Nevertheless, remember the followingbefore proceeding :

DO NOT LIGHT EVERYTHING

If you illuminate everything equally you take away theemphasis from what you really want to highlight. Selectthose objects that you want to focus attention on and light only them. The interplay of highlights and shadows iswhat results in the most interesting visual surroundings.

DO NOT OVERLIGHT

With landscape lighting, we are highlighting articles suchas trees, statues and shrubs against the near black background of night. Even low wattage lamps can produceample brightness against the dark veil of the night. Toomuch wattage may brighten objects too much and mayresult in visual discomfort.

hting T

echniq

37

Direct Accent Lighting

This technique calls for a direct beam of light aimed directlytowards the object to be illuminated. Lighting fixtures usingPAR and MR halogen reflector lamps are the most commonchoice. Since these lamps are available in a multitude ofwattages and beam spreads, you are sure to find the right lampwhatever the size and distance of object you wish to illuminate.Products recommended for this application; pages 22 to 27.

Technique : Direct Accent Lighting

Mirroring

This mirroring technique takes advantageof the natural reflection of calm water. The scenic effects can be breathtaking.Imagine, if you will, the raw beauty of amoonlit snow-capped peak reflected onthe surface of a serene mountain lake.Similar reflections are possible in the calmwater of an artificial pond by simply high-lighting objects at the edge of the pond. Products recommended for this applica-tion; pages 22 to 27.

Effect and technique : Mirroring

___________ Image reflected into the water

LIGHTING TECHNIQUES

_____________www.snoc.net

38

Effect : Moonlighting Technique : Moonlighting

Silhouetting

The silhouette lighting technique seeks to capture the peripheral outline of an object by focusinglight on the backside of the object while the front side remains in the dark. The luminous effect is quite mystical as an aurora oflight appears to emanate fromthe outer edges of the object. The diagram shows how the sil-houette effect is produced whenan object, say a tree, is illumi-nated from behind. Productsrecommended for this applica-tion; pages 22 to 27.

Moonlighting

Moonlighting is soft directional lighting from above. Install an accent lighting sourcehigh up in a tree and allow the light beam to trickle through the branches towards theground. The branches and foliage are immersed in a luminous glow and their shadowsfashion a mosaic of patterns on the ground. Products recommended for this application; page 28.

Effect :Uplighting

Lig

hting T

echniq

ues

39

Uplighting

Uplighting is extremely popu-lar in landscape lighting pro-jects. Here the light source isusually installed at groundlevel and the beam aimedupwards against the object(a tree trunk, foliage, wall, shrubs, etc.). The landscapedesigner can alter the resul-ting visual effects by varyingthe distance and/or the ai-ming angle with respect tothe object. Products recom-mended for this application;pages 22 to 27.

Technique :Uplighting

There are applications, however, when we simply want toblanket the ground or a vertical surface with soft illumina-tion as evenly as possible. For these, area lighting and floodlighting techniques are perfectly suited since they providewide vertical or horizontal beam spreads.

Area Lighting

Decorative arrangements such as rock gardens, flower bedsand low level shrubs require soft widespread illuminationdirected downwards. The key words here are “soft”, “wide-spread” and “downwards”. SNOC garden downlights featurepainted white interior surfaces for maximum efficiency andconcealed lamps tofocus attention on thearea and objects illumi-nated. Products re-commended for thisapplication; pages 3to 15.

Effect and technique :Area Lighting

Flood Lighting

Whenever there is a need to light large vertical surfaces evenly or a group of smallobjects, floodlights are recommendedbecause they are designed to spread lightalmost evenly over larger areas. This waythe entire illuminated space draws atten-tion rather than a single isolated object.Floodlights are also very useful when weneed to accent an object, say a bush, atclose range. Products recommended forthis application; page 23.

Effect and technique :Flood Lighting

Page 42: Sharp edges eliminated by hand milling Hand brushed ...snocinc.com/pdf/catalogues/Landscape_lighting.pdf · of garden and landscape lighting products in the industry. Thumb through

LIGHTING TECHNIQUES Shadowing

In this variation of accent lighting, we create two dis-tinct lighting effects. We brighten the object (plant orshrub) with a direct beam of light but we also inten-tionally allow the object to project a sharp shadowagainst a backdrop (perhaps a fence or a wall). Sinceby simply manipulating the position of the lightsource with respect to the object, we can change thesize, shape and position of its shadow, the possi-bilities are endless. Products recommended for thisapplication; pages 22 to 27.

Technique :Shadowing

Effect : Shadowing

Grazing

There is an abundance of natural materials that areprized primarily for the richness and feel of theirtexture. The angle at which these textures arelighted has all to do with how they appear to theviewer. When the beam of a directional lightsource is aimed at a sharp angle against a deeplytextured surface, contrasts are maximized and the richness of the texture is enhanced. Products

recommended for this appli-cation; pages 22 to 27.

LANDSCAPE

LIGHTING SYSTEMS

SNOC manufactures LINE VOLTAGE and LOW VOLTAGE lighting systems. Both havecertain economic and performance advantages and the choice often depends on theapplication.

LINE VOLTAGE SYSTEMS (120 volts)

Line voltage systems are those that ope-rate at standard voltage. All installationsmust conform to the requirements of na-tional and local electrical codes.

Line voltage circuits, though, can accommodatemuch higher loads (typically 1,400 watts percircuit) over much greater distances withouthaving to worry about voltage drop. SNOCmanufactures an extensive array of decorativeline voltage fixtures for accent lighting and arealighting.

LOW VOLTAGE SYSTEMS (12 volts)

At the heart of SNOC low voltage systems is a power console (transformer) that convertsstandard line voltage (120 volts) to 12 voltsand incorporates safety features that virtuallyeliminate any risk of electrical shock.

Ease of installation is another huge benefit : simply connect the mainpower cable to the transformer terminal, lay the cable in the gardenwhere you intend to bury it and follow some very simple instructions toconnect the lighting fixtures. There is no need to install expensive water-proof boxes and electrical piping in the ground.

Safe, economical and ea-sy to install SNOC’s lowvoltage lighting systemsoffer an abundance ofsuperior landscape light-ing products to cover allyour needs.

VOLTAGE DROP

Low voltage system cables are, however, generally limited to loading below 300 watts and cable lengths rarely gobeyond 150 feet (45.7 meters). If these guidelines are exceeded, the lighting fixtures at the end of the cable may run undervoltaged and lamp may not shine as brightly. The chart below will help determine the recom-mended watts/cable length limits that will give you the most satisfactory results.

TIPS FOR REDUCING VOLTAGE DROP

Since the reduction of voltage drop is such an important factor in the quality of a low voltage system installation, keep the following guidelines in mind for best results.

• Keep the cable length for the distance to be covered to a minimum. Avoid extra cable or loops between two fixtures.

• Consider lower wattage lamps. Against the dark background of night, more often than not, you will find that youdo not need much wattage to achieve the desired effect.

• Consider using more than one cable connected to the same transformer terminal block and alternate the connection of fixtures between the two cables.Looping the same cable back to the transformerterminal block has the same effect.

• Do not use cables smaller than #12. Smallercables have a higher resistance and therefore atendency to increase voltage drop. 12 gauge issuitable for electrical loading up to 300 watts.

• Use larger transformer consoles. They exhibitmuch lower voltage regulation (i.e. reduction ofvoltage at the terminal block) than do smallertransformers.

CARE ANDMAINTENANCE TIPS

Once installed, your low voltage garden lighting system will be exposed to all kinds of harsh conditionssuch as sprinklers, sun, rain, dust and accumulateddebris. Although our lampholders are made with non-ferrous metals that are weather resistant, a littlecare can help insure years of problem-free perfor-mance.

1. Lubrication of lamps and sockets. Before insert-ing the lamps into the sockets, dip the metalbase of the lamp into corrosion preventive com-pound. Brush some compound on the inside ofthe socket as well. This will prevent moisturefrom attacking the metallic parts of lamps andsockets.

2. Clean the lighting fixtures periodically. Dirt anddebris may accumulate over the lamps or glasscovers particularly for flood lights and accentlights that are aimed upwards. Periodicalcleaning can improve significantly the lighting performance and prolong the life of your fixture.
