A Man Among Wolves

SHAUN ELLIS

EARLY LIFE • Was born October 12, 1964

• Born and raised in Norfolk England

• Raised by his mom, grandma, and grandpa

• He would sneak out of his house at night to go watch foxes and badgers in Norfolk

• Was a Gamekeeper

• Joined and served with the Royal Marines

• He once brought buckets of frogs from the pond down the street and let them jump around the house

• He brought five chickens into the house but his mom made him take them back

• He brought a Muscovy duck into the house with it’s eggs and nest but his mom made him take them back again

EXPERIENCE IN IDAHO

• Sold everything for plane ticket to Winchester, Idaho

• Worked with the Nez Percé and Levi Holt

• Joined a pack of wolves in Idaho for 2 years

• Was taught how to observe Wolves

• Recorded wolf howls and learned how to identify individual pack members

• Learned how intelligent and how they show trust and balance within there pack

• Levi Holt ran the Wolf Education center and Research center on tribal lands

• Shaun would work all day and study all night

• Since he couldn’t hunt he would look after the young cubs

COMBE MARTIN WILDLIFE AND DINOSAUR PARK

• Founder and head of wolf pack management at Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park in North Devon

• Worked with 17 captive wolves which included 4 pups

• Originally 6 wolves at the park where he rescued from private ownership

• Spent 18 months living in captivity with 3 abandoned pups

• Pups names are Yana, Tamaska, and Matsi

• The wolves became almost addicted the fat on carcasses

• Shaun started to eat the fat for 4 months because it would keep him warm

EXPERIENCE IN POLAND• Flew to Poland in 2002

• His goal was to help manage the creatures within the forest

• On second trip Shaun invited some of the members from Combe Martin

• Once wolves get to be 6 weeks old they learn how to avoid antlers of deer

• Visited three different farms in Poland to investigate how cattle or other animals were attacked by wolves

• Was trying to prove a theory that wolves were attacking domestic livestock for survival because there wasn’t enough natural prey in the forest. The evidence did not support that

• He created another theory that the wolves were killing the livestock because they liked the fat that kept them warmer in the winter

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT SHAUN ELLIS• He is a author and released his first book in 2009 called, “The Man Who Lived With

Wolves” in 2010, “Living with Wolves” and his latest in 2011, “The Wolf Within: How I Learned to Talk Dog”

• He met Isla Fishburn in September 2009 and more then two years after there first date in April 2010 they married in a native American style.

• He has worked with wolves since 1990

• Before working with wolves he studied the red fox in UK and coyote in Canada

• In the summer of 2011 Shaun and Isla relocated to The Wolf Centre which is still in Combe Martin Park but is by the seaside and is not able to be viewed by the public
