TRIPLE CROWN ® LITE.A LITTLE GOES A LONG WAY.
Triple Crown Lite is the original dietary breakthrough for “easy keepers,” horses that maintain
their weight on very little grain or just pasture and hay, thus shortchanging themselves on
essential vitamins and minerals. Triple Crown Lite is so heavily fortified, you can feed as few
as two pounds a day (4 cups). Its high-fiber and low-calorie formula also makes Triple Crown
Lite perfect for ponies and minis. This low-soluble-carbohydrate diet is
also beneficial for horses with metabolic issues. For more information,
visit www.triplecrownfeed.com or call 800-267-7198.

Doc, My barrel horse con-
tinuously has chunks of hoof breaking off the front of his hoof
wall and even though he performs well most of the time he starts get-ting sore a few weeks after he is trimmed. Is there anything that can be done to help him? As always, the first
thing to do is to get him examined by an equine veterinarian knowl-
edgeable in foot care and lameness or in this case a knowledgeable far-rier and veterinarian. Many people spend lots of money on their horses but neglect their feet. With a build-ing, the foundation is the most important part of the structure. It doesn’t matter how pretty the rest of the building looks if the foundation can’t support it. We will assume your horse has good big feet. Listening to the fact that he gets sore a few weeks after he is trimmed tells me that he may need to have his feet trimmed more often and if he is getting them trimmed every 4 to 6 weeks, he may need them to be trimmed more ag-
gressively. Many performance peo-ple who have horses in speed events think that a long toe increases stride length and therefore speed. Long toes cause an increase in break over time and therefore cause a decrease in speed. In all horses a long toe increases the stress on the suspen-sory ligament and on the flexor ten-dons and collat-eral ligaments of the foot. It does this by causing the heel to become under run. The lower heels stretch all the aforement ioned structures. The long toe also acts as a ful-crum on the front of the foot and so the hoof wall is set up to break away or pull away from the white line causing the “chunks” that come off the front of your horse’s foot. This can also be a structural predisposing cause of white line disease. Many people get a little obsessed with the angle of the hoof. Each hoof is different but one thing is constant with all feet and that is that they should all be in balance. This is done by having the bones of the pastern and hoof in alignment. A broken back pastern hoof axis usually goes along with a horse that has long toes and under run heels. A broken forward pastern hoof axis goes along with a clubbed foot. Having the pastern and hoof bones in alignment is not possible unless the foot is trimmed or shod in a bal-anced manner. The heels should be trimmed even with the widest part of the frog. Few horses are timed
this way. It gives the horses a larg-er foot print which distributes his weight over more area. If his feet are not trimmed this way, he will feel like a person walking on a flip flop that is too small with their heel
hanging off the back. The heels and toes follow
each other. If he has under run heels, the toe will usu-ally be long and he will feel like he is walking in long clown shoes. The feet also need to be balanced form side to side. If
the foot is low on one side and high
on the other, his foot will be like a tire out
of balance. One side of his coffin joint will be under more stress than the opposite side. It also stresses the collateral liga-
ments of the foot. Just like a poor founda-tion affects the building above, un-balanced feet affect the joints and other structures including the back of your horse. It creates a domino affect. A side to side and front to back x-ray of your horse’s feet can probably go a long way toward helping him out. X-rays to a farrier help him/her do his/her job just like they help a surgeon perform sur-gery. Knowledge is power! Good luck with your horse.
