What could be more fun than a fantastical project to escape the grim realities of the past year? Embarking on the adventure of a new type of production was both daunting and illuminating. Our entire team found new ways to create performance. The ensemble included talented students serving in a variety of roles—as actors, stage managers, designers, technicians, dramaturgs and dungeon masters. In our own “homespun module,” the design team manifested an imaginative virtual domain full of enchantment and peril, dragons and heartstrings, in which to tell our story. Our campaign led us to explore grief, demons, love and magic. In a world overwhelmed with fear and apprehension, this production was a welcome escape to another realm; one in which we were all Strong…Powerful…And magical. With thanks to my collaborators and colleagues for their creativity in a pandemic year...

DIRECTOR’S NOTEDIRECTOR’S NOTE

WHAT IS DUNGEONS & DRAGONS?WHAT IS DUNGEONS & DRAGONS?It is 1972, and Gary Gygax, former insurance writer and board game hobbyist-turned-creator, sits in his basement with his children Ernie and Elise; a loose packet of 50 pages, a small stack of note cards, and a funnily-shaped gaming die is placed on the table between them. As the children settle, Gary looks over a note card one last time, takes a deep breath, and begins to speak: “You are in the Dungeons of Castle Greyhawk. The cells are about 15 feet square with iron bars between you and the corridor. Your wrists are in manacles chained to the wall. What do you do?” Elise, whose little note card has the work “Thief” written at the top, asks if she can pick the lock on her manacles; Gary hands her the die. She rolls it, squints at the number and her note card for a second, then lets out a whoop! She rolled well, and Gary informs his daughter that the manacles fall off. Holding up his card, titled “Elf ” with an “M” scribed in front in a distinctly different hand, Ernie points to a line of writing that says “Spell: Magic Missile” and asks if he can use that to break his chains. This Gary narrates with appropriate flair as Ernie pencils in a mark next to the line to show he’s used up the spell. With mounting excitement—and the odd question clarifying a rule or a description of the space around them—the two fictional characters and the three very real players set off down the corridor and into a world of pure imagination. Although the events portrayed herein may differ from that very first session, the spirit of adventure that inspired this storyteller and the minds

of his interactive audience founded a fantasy world that would one day travel from the Gygax family basement throughout the world, eventually to become Dungeons & Dragons. Dungeons & Dragons is a Pen-and-Paper Tabletop Roleplaying Game. Unlike the centuries-old board games before it and the innovative video games after it, in Dungeons & Dragons—known henceforth as D&D—there are no pawns to push or buttons to bop, no checkered table or screen to stare at, and no way to play alone. D&D is a game of Interactive and Improvisational Storytelling. A storyteller—in game terms, the Dungeon Master, or DM—sets up a situation, narrating a world and setting within which fellow players each assume the role of a specific character. These fantasy characters range from a Female Human Knight who is missing an eye to a Male Elf Wizard named Melf to a Dwarf Ranger who gets too deep in the cups to literally anything that one can imagine and which the DM allows to be played. Together, the DM and the players play off of one another to create and experience a story, with the DM setting up story beats and plot hooks and interesting non-player characters of their own with whom the actual players interact through in-game personas. Players improvise dialogue and narrate their characters' actions so everyone can imagine the situation for themselves. Of course, no fantasy adventure would be complete without danger and risk: the DM will often introduce combat with fearsome foes—such as Dragons, as the name would imply—to challenge the players’ characters, whose fates are quite literally decided by a roll of the dice. To add an element of uncertainty, the players roll dice to determine the outcome of their actions, leading to both hilarious failure of the mundane and the unbelievable success of the near-impossible. Herein lies the magic of D&D; it is a game in which all expectations may be turned on their heads either by through chance or the limitless choices of the players. There are no finite options in D&D: so long as the group agrees that it serves the story and the fun of the experience, anything can be done. Or at least there is a chance that anything can be done; from there, we let the dice decide.For further reading, I would suggest Of Dice and Men by David M. Productions entered on the Participating level are eligible for invitation to the KCACTF regional festival and may also be considered for national awards recognizing outstanding achievement in production, design, direction and performance. Last year more than 1,500 productions were entered in the KCACTF involving more than 200,000 students nationwide. By entering this production, our theater department is sharing in the KCACTF goals to recognize, reward, and celebrate the exemplary work produced in college and university theaters across the nation.
