enduring classics with a
fresh beat
Great classical music has endured for years be-
cause people the world over, regardless of their
background and the depth of their understanding,
respond to beautiful melodies and harmonies. UlIti-
mately, the best-known music has become “popu- lar’ in the contemporary sense. (Editor’s Note: In other words, a pop hit tune.) The bossa nova
(new beat) will endure because we all like a simple repetitive beat whether or not we understand the
complexity of its origin. The bossa nova is a very
popular beat today.
Could Rachmaninoff, Brahms or Tchaikovsky
have envisioned when they wrote their music that some day their melodies would become a part of
the popular culture of other lands? When these
great composers borrowed from the popular and
folk music of their day, did they know that they
were providing material for men to use again in
new ways? Did they know that their melodies would inspire lyricists to turn them into songs—arrangers
to set them in fresh, contemporary instrumenta-
tions—performers to embellish them and impro- vise around them in fresh, new styles? If they were
here today, wouldn't they be pleasantly surprised
to find that most people can sing or hum their
tunes (even though many of these people know their melodies by new names)?
One of the best of today’s arrangers is a man named Marty Gold. His touch with an orchestra is
well known through the many records he’s made.
His affinity for great ballads is nowhere better il-
lustrated than in his recent albumcalled SUDDENLY IT'S SPRINGTIME (LPM /LSP-2882), which Marty ar- ranged for a full string orchestra creating a breath- taking musical experience. (Incidentally, the title
tune in that album is an adaptation of the first
movement theme of Rachmaningyt Ss Second Piano
Concerto.)
In this album, Marty Gold shows how the past
and present can be blended with enchanting re-
sults. He proves that the enduring classics can be freshly interpreted with the most contemporary of
beats, the bossa nova, with no diminution of their
greatness and beauty.
Whether you want to relax and listen in quiet
solitude or dance with your favorite partners, you’l|
find enjoyment in this wonderful combination of melody and rhythm. Marty Gold’s CLASSIC BOSSA
NOVA /s a rare blend. Perhaps it can be considered
a classic in its own time. JACK SOMER
