EUROPE: PORTABLE AC IS MAKING HEADWAY
Europe has been moving towards R290 in portable AC
• EU F-Gas Regulation bans the use of HFCs with GWP > 150 in portable AC as of 2020
• at least 8 manufacturers in Europe, main players: DeLonghi, Midea
BUT, the move to R290 is split AC has not happened yet in Europe:
• Midea - received Blue Angel certification from German government; will start selling next year

• HC-based residential heat pumps
• Europe: at least 15 manufacturers, but production volumes are small

HC BASED HEAT PUMP & WATER CHILLERS
• Triple Aqua's efficient heat pump using hydrocarbons is running in two offices and a supermarket in the Netherlands
• can save up to 50% in heating and cooling costs in commercial buildings compared to traditional heat pumps, with a COP (coefficient of performance) between 4 to10
• The system employs propaene (R443A), a mixture of the hydrocarbons propane (R290) and propene (R1270), with a global warming potential (GWP) of 3 and a charge of < 5 kg

CASE STUDY: METRO STORE IN PADOVA
• METRO Cash & Carry in Padova uses 2 R290 chillers (indirect system) to fulfil 2 functions:
• cooling power to the subcooling system after the CO2 transcritical gas cooler
• air-conditioning during summer months

Efforts at the EU level:
EC Standardisation Request: CEN and CENELEC to work on specifications for A3 refrigerants to provide for additional mitigation measures and allow wider use of HCs
LIFE FRONT: EU project to remove barriers posed by standards to wider uptake of flammable refrigerants in refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pumps

CONCLUSIONS
• Uptake of HFC-free AC equipment is currently low, due to a number of barriers - it is critical to address these now as the AC sector is poised to record a high growth
• Training is key to ensure safe handling of flammable refrigerants
• Standards & national codes need to be revised to allow adoption of flammable HFC-free refrigerants
