The year kicked off with our assistance at the “CROWS FAN FAIR” in January. We were unable to have our usual sausage sizzle this year as the Club arranged for food vans to be present. However, we were able to sell our merchandise and photos and to sign people up for membership of the Group. Thank you to all of our committee members and volunteers who assisted with the day. Well done everyone. A wonderful effort in the heat! Banner has now commenced at our new ‘home’, the Christian Family Centre, 185 Fredrick Road, Seaton. Everyone is always welcome to come along, have a look at how it all happens and join in the fun. Work at the moment is mainly on the banners for our AFLW team. The AFLW season is well underway and there was a good turnout of enthusiastic supporters at Norwood for the girls’ first game. Unfortunately, it was not the desired result for us. The Crows girls played great footy but sadly they could not kick straight on the night, and this cost them a valuable win over last season’s premiers. Our congratulations go to Elizabeth Trist, who was elected to take up the position at our February meeting on 4th of February. We welcome Liz to our committee and wish her luck in this position and I look forward to working with her and the rest of the committee in the coming season. The Newsletter of the Crows Supporters Group – February 2019

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH – “You can’t use up creativity. The more you use, the

more you have.”

KEEP ON SUPPORTING! from our President Peter Kauschke

Hello everyone and welcome to season 2019.

Our Vice President, Tony Trist, has been working his fingers to the bone to get our website up and running and it is amazing. Well worth having a look at and exploring it at length. Details of this are in Tony’s report further on in the Shed News.

NEW TREASURER Unfortunately, Chris Pugliese was unable to continue in his position of Treasurer, so we called for applications, and we thank those who enquired about the position and applied. Our congratulations go to Elizabeth Trist, who was elected to take up the position at our February meeting on 4th of February. We welcome Liz to our committee and wish her luck in this position and I look forward to working with her and the rest of the committee in the coming season.

Please stay safe fellow Crows Supporters Group members, and we hope to see you all in the near future.

EDITOR’S VIEW by Jenny Smart

SEASON 2019 – Getting excited? I am starting to. Last season was rather a strange one for

everyone in our club. At times there seemed to be a ‘cloud’ hanging over our boys throughout 2018. However, judging by reports and photos coming out of the Club, things have changed. I don’t think I have ever seen the boys looking so happy. Hopefully a good omen ahead of a good season. Get your red, blue and gold gear ready, as well as your voices. Season 2019 is almost

upon us!

PORT PIRIE BUS If you can’t wait for the ‘real stuff’, The Crows Supporters Group are sending a bus to Port Pirie for the JLT Community match between Adelaide Crows and Port Power on Saturday 2nd March. The price of the bus will be $35 for members and $45 for non-members. The bus will depart at 11:00am from AAMI Stadium and return straight after the game to AAMI Stadium. FAMILY FAN FAIR DAY

I wasn’t able to get to the Fun Fair Day held by

the Club at Wayville Showgrounds but looking

at the photos, I can tell that it must have been a

lot of fun for the young ones. Hot, but a lot of

fun!

Members of your Committees manned the stall

selling merchandise, signing up new members

and everything else we were called on to do.

Unfortunately, we were unable to have a

sausage sizzle as we have done for many

years, as the Club decided to have food trucks.

If you haven’t been to any of the women’s games, I’d like to encourage you to attend; they are family events and I always have a great time, win or lose. I’m looking forward to the JLT game in Port Pirie too and hope to see many of our members at the game. I always have membership forms with me if you bring a non-CSG member along and they are interested in joining up, or if you need one yourself.

BANNER REPORT by Dylan Clark

Hello all I hope you all had a great off season and are ready for 2019. Banner making has kicked off again for season 2019. We started on Tuesday 29th of January and already have had two AFLW banners hoisted up by the time you read this. I’d like to thank the people who have

already helped, and the new folk we have seen so far this year. There is no minimum amount you are required to do; in fact, you can come along and do nothing. However, I guarantee you’ll be helping in some shape or form in no time. We have attendees from as young as 4 years old (thanks Ruby King. Your letter placing skills are amazing) or as experienced as - well I’ll say very experienced. AFL rules do stipulate that to be able to come onto the field you must be a minimum of thirteen years old to assist in holding up the banner. Please note also that appropriate foot wear is an AFL requirement for safety reasons. Having closed in footwear (eg no thongs or sandals) will suffice. While people may enjoy a drink or two on game day, if I believe anyone is under the influence of alcohol, illicit drugs or prescription drugs, which can impact your cognitive ability and would impact the safety of yourself and others, you will be refused your position for that game. Anyone is welcome anytime to help with the making of banners. You can come for as little or as much time as you like. Banner hours are from 6 pm to 10 pm on Tuesdays at the Christian Family Centre at 185 Frederick Road, Seaton. As my brain sometimes struggles these days to think of new banner sayings, if you ever think of any, feel free to email them to [email protected] or inbox our Facebook page, attention to me.

ACL RULES RHIANNON OUT FOR SEASON

Sadly, scans confirmed that Crows AFLW ruck Rhiannon Metcalfe tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee and she will miss the 2019 AFLW season. She suffered the injury in a simple tackling incident in the trial game against Fremantle in Darwin. Phil Harper said the Club will rally behind Rhiannon. “It’s obviously very disappointing for us, as Rhi has been our number one ruck since we started,” Harper said. “But she has a very tough character and the Club will support her every step of the way through her rehabilitation.”

RHIANNON, BEST OF LUCK TO YOU FOR A SPEEDY RECOVERY – WE ARE THINKING OF YOU!

FOUR NEW CLUB LIFE MEMBERS

Rory Sloane has had a memorable start to 2019, adding Crows Life Member to his long list of career accolades. Rory was one of four to receive Life Membership at the Club’s Corporate Season Launch. In 2018, Rory became a Crow for life when he signed a five-year contract extension. Fan favourite, Andy Otten, was also awarded Life Membership. He has spent eleven seasons

with the Crows, taking out the Emerging Talent Award in 2009 and the Coaches’ Award in 2013. Andy’s resilience was put to the test during his time at the Club as he endured two knee reconstructions, the second of which kept him out of the senior side for 960 days between 2014 and 2017. In 2018, he played his 100 th AFL game - nine years and 317 days after his AFL debut. Also receiving Life Membership was Alan Stewart, who spent thirteen years as a Senior Recruitment Officer at Adelaide, before announcing his retirement in 2017. Alan started his football career back in 1966 as a player at the Central District Football Club and went on to also play the role of coach, recruiter and administrator for the Bulldogs. In 2018, he was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the AFL Coaches' Association for his invaluable contribution to the game. Rob Reid, who played a key role in recruiting both Rory and Andy, also became a Life Member. A former full-time teacher, Rob is the longest serving recruiting coordinator in the Club’s history.

Criteria for Adelaide Football Club Life Membership is 10 years of service at the discretion of the Board.

FIRST WOMEN’S GAME - GREAT

CROWD – BUT NOT THE RESULT

WE HOPED FOR

Our girls kicked off their AFLW season with a disappointing one-point loss to reigning premier the Western Bulldogs at Norwood Oval in their first game. The Bulldogs were pushed hard by the Crows, but they managed a season-opening victory – 2.6 (18) to 1.11 (17) – in front of a crowd of 7830. Bulldogs star Katie Brennan kicked her side's only two goals of the game within three minutes in the second quarter. Crows first-gamer, Chloe Scheer, kicked the team’s one and only goal in the first quarter.

It was a hard-fought game and our girls seemed to be the best team on the night, but when you kick 1/11, it makes it difficult to have a victory. They were led by Ebony Marinoff, who had a game-high 25 disposals and 10 tackles, while 2017 AFLW best and fairest Erin Phillips was influential with 18 touches. The Crows were kept goalless after quarter-time, registering 10 straight behinds in the final three terms in new coach Matthew Clarke's first game in charge. WESTERN BULLDOGS 2.6 (18) ADELAIDE 1.11 (17) Thanks to all who turned out in the heat to help the CSG in any way.

WINNER ON THE NIGHT Our girls may not have won their game, but we certainly had a winner in our ranks. Our photographer Sue Retallick received a message from the Club to say that she was the one chosen to give the game ball to the umpire before the match, and then to cap it all off, Sue won the Rainbow Crows raffle - the prize being a signed footy. Congratulations Sue. What a night!

SECOND GAME SO EXCITING

As I was finishing this Shed News, I watched our girls play Carlton, and what a great game of footy that was. Our first

half was a bit rusty but after half time the standard of play was wonderful; very competitive. Anyone who says

women’s footy is not exciting did not watch that game. the skills were amazing. Now to see what they can produce in

their future games. GOOO CROWS!

Our heartfelt thanks go to Committee member Megan Harris, who drove through the night to get the flags over to

Melbourne to show support to our girls. She also brought the banner home. Well done Megan. THANK YOU! J.S.

PRE-SEASON DINNER GREAT SUCCESS

Our pre-season dinner held at the Bartley Tavern on 7th February was a huge success with over seventy of our members attending It was a great catch-up for everyone, with some people not seeing each other since the end of the last season. It was clear that everyone is looking for a much better year in 2019. Our President Peter Kauschke welcomed everyone and during the evening, our number one ticket holder, Graeme Goodings, also spoke to everyone and expressed the hope that 2019 will be outstanding for all of us.

BITS AND PIECES

BEAUTIFUL LOCAL WEDDING Richard Douglas became the fourth Crow to say 'I do' in less than six months when he married long-time girlfriend Alessandra. The pair tied the knot at Lloyd Brothers Winery in McLaren Vale, before taking photos at Port Willunga Beach. Richard proposed to Alessandra during a holiday in Port Douglas last June. We wish the young couple all the very best for a happy future together.

THE ROMANTIC SIDE OF TEX Our co-captain Taylor Walker took his fiancé Ellie Brown on a trip down memory lane when he proposed to her on Christmas Eve. Tex revealed that he took his long-term girlfriend back to the place they first met, where he popped the question. “We met back at the Clipsal. I like to say she was a grid girl, but she wasn’t – she drove a golf buggy around for Channel 7 one year and Scotty Thompson and I jumped in and I thought ‘geez, I like the look of this girl’,” he said. “That night, it was getting late and we were heading out, so I asked Ellie if she could hold my sunnies, just so I could come back the next week and see her again – I sucked her right in, she fell for that.”

The day he proposed, Walker said Ellie had no idea what was coming. “It was Christmas Eve when we went back there so they were setting up for the race. We often take the dogs for a walk down there, so she had no idea,” he said. “I had a lot of things I wanted to say but I was more nervous doing that than playing in the grand final and I was very nervous that day.” Before he proposed, Tex made sure to get permission from Ellie’s father Rob Brown. “Well, I spoke to Ellie’s old man the day before, RB, he was quite excited to get a male into his family, having two daughters,” he said. “I did say to RB that we’d keep it between us and as a bit of a surprise for Vicki and Alex (Ellie’s mum and sister) but as soon as he got home, he got a bit weak and told Vicki.”

WELCOME BACK PORPS

Four years after his AFL retirement, Jason Porplyzia is returning to West Lakes, taking on a dual role at the Club. Jason will work part-time with the Crows Academies and runner for the Club’s AFL and SANFL sides. He returns after three years at West Adelaide Football Club. He also worked in the Bloods’ Junior Football Talent Department as a Talent Manager in 2018. The position with the academies will see him work closely with Crows AFLW co-

captain Chelsea Randall, who is the Female Talent Officer. On game days, he will share the running duties with Crows Midfield Development Coach Paul Thomas. Brett Burton said he was pleased to see such a popular past player return to the Club.

Page 11: SHED NEWS - Adelaide Crows Supporters Group€¦ · The Crows Supporters Group are sending a bus to Port Pirie for the JLT Community match between Adelaide Crows and Port Power on

MOTHERS JOIN FATHER-SON-DAUGHTER ACADEMY

For the first time in the Club’s history, Adelaide welcomed mothers to its Crows Academies Father Son and Daughter program. AFLW star Erin Phillips brought her two-year-old twins Blake and Brooklyn to West Lakes to join a host of famous Club names at the program’s first event of 2019. Almost 40 kids watched on as Adelaide’s men’s team trained, including Eddie Betts’ two boys Lewis and Billy, who are eligible to play for either the Crows or Carlton, and Tom Lynch’s son Koby. Several past players were also in attendance with their sons and daughters, including Mark Ricciuto, Brett Burton, Matthew Robran, Tony Modra and Kym Koster.

Currently, there are 38 past and present players who have children eligible for selection by the Adelaide Football Club in the either AFL or AFLW side. “To now welcome our first Mother Son/ Daughter combination today through our AFLW co-captain Erin and her children Brooklyn and Blake, was a significant moment,” Crows Academies Manager Jarrod Meers said. “This AFLW connection to the Academies will be further enhanced by past players who now reside interstate, when we invite their daughters to be special guests when our AFLW side plays in Melbourne.”

Past and present Crows players with their families at the Father/ Mother/ Daughter/ Son event Another three events for the program will be held in Adelaide, including the Round 20 curtain raiser match at Adelaide Oval before the Crows take on St Kilda. There will also be two interstate events in 2019, including the AFLW side’s Round Two match with Carlton at Princess Park and the AFL side’s Round Nine clash with Brisbane at the Gabba.

CROW COMEDY

HUSBANDS - DO THIS IF YOU DARE

Next time your wife gets angry, put a cape on her and say, “Now you are super angry!” Maybe she will laugh or maybe you will die.”

CAMELS

A camel meets an elephant. The elephant asks jokingly:

“Why do you have two breasts on your back?” The camel

replies: “With a face like yours, I’d just shut up.”

FAVOURITE BOOK A bookseller conducting a market survey asked a woman "Which book has helped you most in your life?" The woman replied, "My husband’s cheque book!"

WHY?

Why did the manager hire the marsupial?

Because he was koala-fied.

Why did the wombat cross the road?

To see its flat mate.

IDIOT SIGHTINGS

A man had to have the garage door repaired. The repairman told him that one of our problems was that he did not have a 'large' enough motor on the opener. The man thought for a minute, and said that he had the largest one made at that time, a 1/2 horsepower. He shook his head and said, 'You need a 1/4 horsepower.' The man responded that 1/2 was larger than 1/4 and the repair man said, 'NOOO, it's not. Four is larger than two.' A man was at the airport, checking in at the gate when an airport employee asked, 'Has anyone put anything in your baggage without your knowledge?' To which the man replied, 'If it was without my knowledge, how would I know?' He smiled knowingly and nodded, 'That's why we ask.'

When a woman and her husband arrived at a car dealership to pick up their car after a service, they were told the keys had been locked in it. They went to the service department and found a mechanic working feverishly to unlock the driver’s side door. As the woman watched from the passenger side, she instinctively tried the door handle and discovered that it was unlocked. ‘Hey,' she announced to the technician, 'It’s open!' His reply, 'I know. I already did that side.'

Our grateful thanks go to the Adelaide Football Club for allowing us to use information and photos from the club site. Also special thanks to our photographer Sue Retallick for her wonderful photos.
