Neil Egan,
President Report– August, 2017 As Murray Rogash is travelling overseas, this report has been compiled by Vice– President Lloyd Ackeroyd My main area in the shed at the moment is the workshop so I will fill you in on some of the recent things that have been happening. The sailboat crew have been progressing well on the completion of Bob Pope’s boat. This was partly completed by Bob before his passing and will be raffled next month. The same raffle will include the rocking horse and the furnished dollhouse that have been restored by men in the workshop. Several meetings have been held regarding the metal work area and a plan has started to improve the usability of this area. The workshop gets many requests from outside the shed for projects. These range from a bench for four children that is being created from a donated Oregon beam to card holders for senior citizens and a workbench for kindergarten kids. We also have an ongoing project with the local special school to create woodwork projects for the students to make without the use of potentially dangerous tools. So far, we have made kits for several billy carts, an airplane model and a garden bench. So, if you have a good idea for something that special kids could make, let me know.
Any one feel like a challenge? A lady called Sonya came into the shed the other day, requesting some help to assemble a dollhouse. The challenge for us now is do we have anyone willing to take on this project? It does not require workshop skills but does require a lot of patience and a delicate touch. The other thing it requires is a dedicated space to work on the project where the numerous parts and partly finished house will be safe. The whole thing is a kit with many delicate pieces that need to be fitted to-gether according to the detailed instructions. You can see more about it by looking up Beacon Hill Dolls house on the internet. The finished item looks like this. If this is something you would like to get involved in or to get more information, contact Lloyd Akeroyd.

Social Meeting:
Last week more than 130 men in Mount Gravatt were checked to see whether they had a “Spanner in the Works”. This is the name of a program developed by the Australian Men’s Shed Association. The program was used at a Men’s Health Expo run by Mount Gravatt Men’s Shed. The idea of the program is to compare maintaining men’s health to vehicle maintenance. To continue the analogy, during the Expo several vintage cars were parked outside the Community Hall at Mount Gravatt Showgrounds.
The Community Hall was transformed for the Expo. The Upper Hall was turned into a lecture theatre where short talks were given by representatives from 10 different organisations dealing with various medical conditions such as lung cancer, prostate cancer, arthritis, and mental health. Around the walls of the Upper Hall were tables where men could have individual meet-ings with organisation representatives. The Lower Hall was transformed into a consultation area where the men filled in “Spanner in the Works” health questionnaires. Each man then discussed the results of his individual questionnaire with a student paramedic from Queensland University of Technology. The students provided each man with recommenda-tions about what he could do to maintain and improve his health.
The Health Expo was central to the focus on health at Mount Gravatt Men’s Shed. The Shed is a registered health promotion charity and its main objective is to improve the health and wellbeing of men aged 18 years or older and reduce the number of men who are at risk from preventable health issues that may originate from isolation. The Shed environment allows members to talk informally with other members about their health issues and concerns. In a more formal approach, the Shed organises guest speakers on men’s health issues at monthly lunchtime meetings and at occasional longer events like last week’s Health Expo. The MGMS music group which meets on Tuesday mornings at the shed, opened the recent monthly meeting accompanying the members singing " Advance Australia Fair " and " The Men's Shed Song ". Basil Wood on keyboards kept the members entertained throughout the lunch break. The inclusion of a drummer this week into the group, should make the jam sessions more structured.
1) If at first you don't succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried.
2) A conclusion is the place where you got tired of thinking.
3) Experience is something that you don't get until just after you need it.
4) For every action, there is an equal and opposite criticism.
5) He who hesitates is probably right.
6) No one is listening until you make a mistake.
7) Success always occurs in private, and failure in full view.
8) To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research.

Behind the Scenes with the MGMS Cooking Group (from page 3)
The MGMS Cooking Group successfully fed more than 160 people with desserts at the “Spanner in the Works” Men’s Health Expo. But the event was not without its dramas behind the scenes. When David Crossley and the cooking demonstrator, Chef Lyn Albin arrived at the Shed at 11 am on the Monday, they found that some of the items David had removed from the freezer on Sunday, thinking they were apple turnovers, were actually other things. So David and Lyn were faced with two very large lumps of completely frozen turnovers.
The rest of the morning was spent trying to remove individual turnovers from the frozen lumps without damaging them too much. Paul Clekovic even resorted to using a hot air gun from the Workshop at one point.
As the individual turnovers were separated from the frozen mass, they were quickly warmed in the Shed ovens and then ferried up to the Community Hall by Tom Begg in his car. Meanwhile the rest of the group, including Peter Tyley and Alan Wallace waited to serve the desserts to the waiting multitudes.
Anyway, we finally did it with the last 20 or so people receiving desserts after only a short delay – and we had enough turnovers to offer seconds to some lucky members. A great achievement by the Cooking Group, ably guided by Lyn Albin. (The 2nd turnover was as nice as the 1st.) (See page 11 for more photos from the Social Meeting “Spanner in the Works”.).

Photo Group Report A total of 8 members met at the recent MGMS Photo Group morning outing to Oxley Common.
Photo opportunities were scarce on the day as members sought out that hidden gem, but all
enjoyed each other's company and good banter. The next official outing is on September 1st to
the Cultural Centre and GOMA. All photo outings can be seen on the Shed website under

The wood turners’ corner Variety --- the spice of life.
A very interesting facet of activity in MGMS workshops is the variety of challenges presented by requests for assistance the shed receives from various sectors of the community.
Wood turners corner has seen a few of such requests containing their own challenges.
While our turners are gradually improving their ability to incorporate the lessons learned during training exercises into producing finished articles, the unusual requests have provided variety by way of “outside the square” activity.
A few of the requests satisfied so far are:
Replacement rails for chairs
Design and production of spindles as features in a new bar within the horse racing community clubhouse.
Collection plates for a church.
New handles for an antique hedge trimming shears.
A new handle for a heirloom fishing rod, to replace the original cork and wooden handle.
Decorative side columns for our own honour board. These are “split” turnings. These “half columns “ are made of two separate pieces of wood, glued together, back to back, with paper in the glue joint. This allows the joint to be split after turning to produce two identical half columns. Because of the length of these columns each is made up of three separate pieces.
Tool handles of various sizes and shapes.
Our turners are now producing a wide variety of practical articles and are enjoying every minute of it! Why not come and have a brief introductory lesson?
The Shed helps one of its own: A working bee was organised to help Brian Sherman with his new wheelie scooter that needed a ramp for Brian to have access to his home. This is a demonstration of Shed Community Projects in action.

Tuesday Woodwork
On a bitterly cold winter morning, a husband & wife in Dublin were listening to the radio during breakfast. They heard the announcer say, “We are going to have 8 to 10 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the even numbered side of the street so the snow plough can get through”. So the good wife went out and moved her car.
A week later while eating breakfast again, the radio announcer said, “We are expecting 10 to 12 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the odd numbered side of the street so the snow plough can get through”. The good wife went out and moved her car again.
The next week they are again having breakfast when the radio announcer said, “We are expecting 12 to 14 inches of snow today. You must park…..” Then the power went off. The good wife was very upset and with a worried look on her face she said, “I don’t know what to do. Which side of the street on so the snow plough can go through?” With love and understanding in his voice that all men who are married to blonds exhibit, the husband replied, “Why don’t you leave it in the garage this time?”
