Nuon’s Competitive Advantage on CCSNuon has a competitive advantage in the energy market: IGCC (coal gasification) has the highest potential for economically feasible

CO2 capture applications (for both existing and new plants). The costs for CO2 capture for a IGGC plant range from 20 to 25 €/tonne CO2 for new build, while the costs for conventional coal plants range from 30 to 50 €/tonne CO2.

Phase 1 (BASE CASE 2010)• IGCC for F-class for 1200 MW_e net power• Multi-fuel 3*2000 tpd SCGP for 65% syngas and 35% NG Power• Solids Fuels: Hard coals and partial petcoke, biomass, sewage sludge, refuge • SCGP with 50 bar, 350 oC Syngas Cooler (no CCS)• Gas treatment optimised with Sulfinol-M and Claus SCOT Sulphur Recovery

Phase 2 (FUTURE stepwise upgrading options after Phase 1)• Partial Sweet rather than Sour Shift per gas string & special CO2 AGR• Plus 30-80% CCS scope (in 2 or 3 subsequent steps)• CCS scope ~50% (after Step 2) + biomass for ~80% CCS equivalent!• IGCC 100% syngas (extra SCGP &) vs extra NG spike (loss of LHV)?• Thus 4th Reactor added, including ancillaries?

IGCC with deferred CCS (Magnum)

Sweet Shift – Pro’s Easier implementation

downstream H2S-AGR (Magnum)

 Easier high saturation to GT

Sweet Shift – Cons

 Syngas ex H2S- AGR dry & 40 oC Small range T_in/out = 340-480 oC

Nuon Magnum Power – IGCC CCS Options Shell

IGCC with CCS (from day 1)

Sour Shift – Pro’s Syngas ex WS > 20% H2O &170 oC

 High range T_in/out = 250-480 oC

Sour Shift – Cons Conversion existing H2S-AGR to

combined and selective unit (Magnum)

 More difficult/capex to install (Magnum)

Nuon Magnum Power & Shell IGCC Design + CCS

• Use multi-fuel IGCC concept, include 40% renewables• Use (partial) CCS mode alone or combined with others (in steps)

• SCGP has versatile R-HP/MP SGC options (scaleable to F-class GT)• Magnum 50-60% CCS equivalent to NG CCGT (Step 2 CCS?)

• Magnum hybrid-CCS solution for ‘’~80% apparent CCS” lowers IGCC efficiency ‘’only’’ 46 -> ~42% LHV (Step 2 CCS + biomass)
