Research and Development

Both James Walker and Teadit have long histories of successful product design and material development that have driven major advances in sealing technology across a range of industries.

Today the companies are as active as ever in product development, working with industry bodies and customers to improve performance in areas such as fugitive emissions, safety margins, rapid gas decompression resistance and chemical compatibility.

State of the art test equipment enables our engineers to simulate operational field conditions for rotating equipment, valves or flanges, allowing us to benchmark in a controlled environment.

Across James Walker and Teadit operations world-class test facilities exist for the development of elastomer, gasket and packing materials, and in addition to product development work these facilities also perform significant volumes of testing for OEMs and end users from the oil and gas, nuclear and defence industries.

In-house testing is often third-party or customer witnessed in addition to further off-site testing at globally recognised test houses in association with customers and academic institutions.

Field testing plus customer approvals programmes such as the Shell TAT and MESC for materials, sealing products and designs, are a constant feature of our product development.

In addition, valuable knowledge is gained by undertaking investigations into sealing challenges faced by customers, many such investigations leading to developments in materials, product design or fitting and maintenance procedures to ensure that future operational reliability and health and safety standards are improved.

On-site support for activities such as plant maintenance and turn-arounds includes creation and supervision of fitting and maintenance regimes.

In the order of 80% of sealing equipment failures can be put down to incorrect fitting or maintenance practices so we view this as a critical part of our role as a sealing supplier - ensuring that our customers gain full benefit of the performance and quality designed into our seals and materials.

Application engineering

Our products don’t work in isolation – their interaction with other components and plant is critical to overall performance. The solution may therefore often lie in changes that can be made to other components and it is here that James Walker Teadit experience can be of great value.

Major improvements in performance and reliability are often achieved through re-engineering suggestions from our design teams.

In helping Shell sites prepare for turn-arounds, we have the capability to tabulate drawings or create new drawings where necessary (all of which are permanently accessible to engineers on all Shell sites and projects) and continue to develop sealing application designs for both new projects and existing plant, always looking to optimise seal and equipment performance and safety.

The rubber bonded cork compounds that form the basis of these mounting products has been specifically designed to operate in harsh environments.

With its closed cell structure providing resistance to absorption of oils and water, each product maintains its original performance through a wide temperature range.

Pipe supports

• Isolating the pipe from the mounting bolts and clamps to prevent fretting and corrosion.

• Isolating dissimilar metals (e.g. between a pipe and a clamp) to prevent electrolytic corrosion.

• Cater for movements in the pipe due to, for example, thermal expansion and contraction which might otherwise result in a build-up of stress in the pipe and potential rupture.



Thermoplastic seals & components

Spring energised PTFE seals

High-performance spring energised PTFE lip seals have been developed to meet the demands of extreme applications, which are beyond the limits of elastomers and packings.

Capable of handling adverse service conditions these seals are used where chemical compatibility, extremes of pressure and temperature, and ultra-low friction are required.

Virtually universal compatibility with all fluids and gases. Suitable for operations from -250°C to +250°C.

Thermoplastic valve seats

Developed in close cooperation with the valve industry, thermoplastic valve seats offer superior performance across a wide temperature and pressure range.

• Exceptional resistance to wear and abrasion.

• Sufficiently conformable to seal in low pressure valve applications.

Custom components & assemblies

Replacing metal with thermoplastic materials provides significant weight savings, improving handling, fitting and safety.

Thermoplastics also offer zero corrosion, don’t support marine growth, need no protective coatings and have excellent abrasion and impact resistance.

Flange & bolt protection
