Almost There We are on the final lap of our Lenten journey as we move toward Holy Week begin- ning on Passion Sunday/Palm Sunday and concluding with the festival of Easter. We have through this journey heard again the stories of JesusTemptation, The visit with Nicodemus, The encounter with the Woman at the Well, the Man born Blind, and culminating with the Raising of Lazarus. These stories connect us with the journey of Lent and our baptismal journey. In bap- tism we renounce Satan and all that opposes Gods rule in our world and lives. We af- firm our faith through the articles of the creed. We hear again that Jesus brings us life- giving water in baptism. We acknowledge that we were blind, but now we see because in baptism we are invited to let Christs light shine through us. Finally, as we prepare for Holy Week we are helped to focus on baptism as our own dying and rising in Christ. We are almost there as we journey with Jesus from his triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Then hear again the story of Jesuspassion. Well next journey to the Upper Room on Maundy Thursday to hear the new commandment to Love one another and the offering of his body and blood through the bread and wine of Holy Communion. We journey to Calvary to the darkness of the Cross on Good Friday through which God brings about the salvation of the whole world. Finally, we hear the Old Testament promises and re- new our baptismal promises at the Easter Eve Vigil. Then we are finally there; the celebration of Easter for the next eight weeks. Were almost there in calling the next pastoral leader on April 2. Almost there through this part of the transition, but just like our journey after Easter Day continues, so does the journey of Shepherd of the Hills as a congregation. The transition goes on through the next days and years as Shepherd of the Hills moves into the next chapter of its mission and ministry proclaiming through word and deed the saving grace and love of Jesus who died and rose for the sake of the whole world. Blessed Holy Week and Easter Journey! Pr. Len

A message from our Interim Pastor….

Almost There

We are on the final lap of our Lenten journey as we move toward Holy Week begin-ning on Passion Sunday/Palm Sunday and concluding with the festival of Easter. We have through this journey heard again the stories of Jesus’ Temptation, The visit with Nicodemus, The encounter with the Woman at the Well, the Man born Blind, and culminating with the Raising of Lazarus. These stories connect us with the journey of Lent and our baptismal journey. In bap-tism we renounce Satan and all that opposes God’s rule in our world and lives. We af-firm our faith through the articles of the creed. We hear again that Jesus brings us life-giving water in baptism. We acknowledge that we were blind, but now we see because in baptism we are invited to let Christ’s light shine through us. Finally, as we prepare for Holy Week we are helped to focus on baptism as our own dying and rising in Christ. We are almost there as we journey with Jesus from his triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Then hear again the story of Jesus’ passion. We’ll next journey to the Upper Room on Maundy Thursday to hear the new commandment to Love one another and the offering of his body and blood through the bread and wine of Holy Communion. We journey to Calvary to the darkness of the Cross on Good Friday through which God brings about the salvation of the whole world. Finally, we hear the Old Testament promises and re-new our baptismal promises at the Easter Eve Vigil. Then we are finally there; the celebration of Easter for the next eight weeks. We’re almost there in calling the next pastoral leader on April 2.

Reflections on Lent and Baptism ….

Baptism is a central theme during this time of

Lent. We look to our baptism for forgiveness and

renewal. In order to give baptism a central focus

symbolically and to find a permanent place for our

baptismal font, it is placed in the center of the chan-

cel connecting Word and Sacraments visually as the

center of our worship along with the cross of Christ.

During this Lenten Season we omit the use of

“Alleluias” from the liturgy, since we are in a time of

reflection and renewal awaiting the celebration of

Easter, when we again sing, “Alleluia! In addition,

our liturgy follows the Order of Worship as provided

in the Lutheran Book of Worship (LBW). Please look

through Holy Communion Setting One (LBW pages

56-76). As you page through you will notice red di-

rections (Rubrics). These give you some of the op-

tions “may use or include” or “is said or sung.” This

is to provide seasonal possibilities within the weekly

liturgy. Where (A) Assisting Minister is found Shep-

herd of the Hills uses the letter (L) for liturgist. The

Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW) ((c) 2006) pro-

vides additional options for Confession and For-

giveness, Prayers of the People, and other possibili-

ties for optional usage, including additional liturgy

styles.

SPECIAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING We are pleased to announce that the Call Committee

and Council have unanimously approved the nomination of Pastor Thomas E. Rogers, Jr. for the

congregation’s approval as our pastor. A Special Congregational Meeting will be held on

April 1st

and April 2nd

in alignment with the regular scheduled services to elect Pastor Thomas

E. Rogers, Jr.

According to the Northern Illinois Synod and our Constitution, a confirmed voting member

must be present and shall have communed and made a contribution of record during the

current or preceding year.

We invite your prayers as we go through the process of calling a new pastor.

PLEASE JOIN THE CHURCH COUNCIL in expressing our sincere appreciation and congratula-

tions to the Call Committee members who have faithfully dedicated their time and talents over the

last 12 months through many hours of interviewing, visiting, and discerning through this call pro-

cess. Call Committee Members: Chuck Romano, Cristy Karaba, Carol Malzahn, Carol Harring-

ton, Diane Doessel, and John Porter.

EASTER BLESSINGS This Easter Season, with your help, we will provide an Easter meal to those families in need from our community and church. Please watch the weekly bulletin for an Easter Blessing envelope, where you can contribute to the cost of a meal and also have an opportunity to sponsor an Easter Lily to adorn our sanctu-ary. LADIES SPRING TEA Come one, come all to our Ladies Spring Tea on Sunday, April 23, 2017

at the McHenry Country Club from 12:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Our speaker will be Holly Stevens, who will present a program on “Grandma’s Dollies”. You are wel-come to bring your antique dolls to the tea for display. For more information con-tact Susan Schultz at 815-578-9547 or Priscilla Rutter at 815-385-0813.

TENEBRAE—A SERVICE OF SHADOWS This Tenebrae Service on Good Friday, April 14th at

7:00 p.m. is an opportunity to reflect on the last moments of Jesus’ life and to understand the true

cost of His pain and what our Savior endured in this, the ultimate sacrifice. Focusing on the 7 last

words of Jesus, the service will be conducted by candle-light. With each step of the journey, a

candle is extinguished until the church is dark; symbolic of Jesus’ day in the tomb. The Tenebrae

service is based on the ancient Christian traditional service, and accompanies a choral and or-

chestral setting. We hope you will make Good Friday a part of your Holy Week.

CHURCH SOFTBALL TEAM Spring is just around the corner, which means so is softball sea-

son! The Church Softball Team is in need of players for the 2017 season. Please contact Chris
