Pastor Andrew’s Thoughts Continued from Page : 11

Andrew Abraham

I recently heard a magnificent

quote that I am in earnest to

share with you: “Every saint has a past, and

every sinner has a future.” What a perfect

little morsel of timeless Christian truth for us

to chew on during our Lenten journeys this

year. The greatest of saints in history suf-

fered the angst and gauntlet of guilt for

sins, and the greatest of sinners have had

every reason to look forward to futures of

grace, forgiveness and freedom from guilt’s

heavy and impossible burden.

While is it true that Christians dwell large-

ly on the reality of sin during our season of

heightened repentance and self-reproach

just before Easter, be of good cheer. Lent’s

ancient purpose is to lead heavy-hearted

pilgrims to the foot of the cross on Good Fri-

day, where we consider with loving hearts

the incredible pain and suffering of one so

beautiful and kind, one who alone could

suffer the full brunt of God’s righteous wrath

in our stead so that we may be certain (yes,

certain) of manifold blisses awaiting us in

God’s everlasting place of splendor, too

wonderful for the eyes of those who linger

still in this valley of the shadow.

Where can you find the Board /

Committee Reports?

The mural is complete!! All that remains is the protective hard coat which will insure a long lasting work of art that is a welcome addition to our church. Lynne Looney has worked hard and long on this project through many illnesses and upheavals in her life. We owe her a vote of thanks. Perhaps we could arrange a dedication service and invite her to attend. March is almost upon us bringing the Lenten services as we prepare to celebrate the resurrection of our glorious savior Jesus. We can all look forward to the mid week services as a time of not only rever-ence but fellowship as well. The congregation meeting was very productive with lots of positive information. Ideas on the great gift giveaway, the mural, the new mural in the fellowship hall, the canopy, and SLF as well as a change in our by-laws. Sounds like you folks were busy. Thank each and every one of you for your help, input, and participation. March is also the time the congregation will be asked to vote on the issues facing SLF. The task force has been meeting and are interacting with the SLF board. This is a very important issue and one that concerns each and everyone of us. Please, in a positive and respectful manner, make your thoughts known to the task force. We will endeavor to make as much information that is available to you prior to the meeting. I look forward to an open and honest discussion before we vote. Please, marshal your thoughts either pro or con and express them to our task force. Remember it is not the day care but our day care. Naturally, financial issues must be faced. Lets all pray for a proper solution to the issues facing our congregation. Your fellow servant in Christ Curt

Do you know the Lydia Circle?

We are a group of ladies from the church that could really use your help. What we

do is make and tie quilts and baby blankets. Last year only 5 ladies made and deliv-

ered 44 quilts. Plus several baby blankets. Quilts not only go to Lutheran World Relief

but are used locally. Many went to Bread of Life (BOL) and they are used and

washed almost daily. Quilts usually last a long time, but the many washings of the BOL

quilts means we need to replace them often. Also the children and baby quilts are

given out to the children when they leave BOL.

That is why we are asking for more ladies come and help. We meet year round on

the second Tuesday of the month at 9AM until Noon in Fellowship Hall. If you can tie a

knot you can work with others to finish up the quilts. We do not do any needle quilting

on these service quilts. If you sew, do bring your machine and we will help you get

started.

We also make baby quilts for both BOL and Plateau Pregnancy. Along with a shop-

ping trip now and then to replace our supplies and have fun picking out new material

for the tops. We try to use gently used sheets for the backs so we can use our monies

to buy new fabric for the tops.

In closing we would like to thank those who have sent us Thrivent Dollars for the

supplies we must purchase. Along with the material we also buy batting and threads

for the quilts and a few blades for our cutters.

We hope you will consider joining for the fun; fellowship and knowing you are

helping the needy stay warm.

If you have any questions

Please call Treva Ley

As promised, a few more of Pastor Andrew’s ideas for a happier new day.

1. Allow yourself fifteen minutes of total silence a day.

2. Gather wildflowers and scatter them on bland-looking eyesores around your home,

or send the petals to people who are lonely.

3. Fast from one meal a week throughout the year for an end to violence in our land.

4. Make your yard more attractive to birds and butterflies.

STEPHEN MINISTRY Paul Wiegert, Stephen Ministry Director

.

“Not Tea Leaves …... A Coffee Cup”

On a break one day at church I started to read the coffee cup that I had my coffee in.

It was a “Stephen Ministry” coffee cup. Near the end of my Stephen Ministry Leadership

training in St. Louis. MO., a luncheon was held in our honor. Our coffee was placed in the

“official” Stephen Ministry mug which we were to take home with us.

On this particular morning it occurred to me that the 19 words on the mug described

what Stephen Ministry is – and what Stephen Ministers do. They are a reminder to us of the

commitment we made to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and to our fellow Christians as we

were commissioned. These words surround the Stephen Ministry logo which depicts a

“broken” person who becomes whole through the cross and a loving circle of Stephen Minis-

try.

Let me share some of these words with you and about the significance they have for Ste-

phen Ministers and their care-receivers.

The first and most important is LOVE. Stephen Ministers reflect the deep, abiding and all-

encompassing love of Christ. A love that is unconditional and never judgmental.

RESPECT is an important component of Stephen Ministry. A courteous attitude, a sincere

and open regard for a person's feelings and for their situation makes it easier to discuss any

issues a care-receiver may have. It is important for them not to feel unimportant or taken for

granted.

One of the first lessons a Stephen Minister encounters is “How to LISTEN,” and it is empha-

sized again and again in our studies. When we listen, we show interest in what the care-

receiver is saying, we let him/her define issues more clearly, we encourage them to evaluate

choices and possible changes. In brief, listening allows them to make reasoned and reasona-

ble decisions.

Some words can be connected to Stephen Ministry. A Stephen Minister will ENCOURAGE,

SUPPORT, HELP, and BEFRIEND a care-receiver who is grieving, depressed, or new in the con-

gregation/community or who lacks self-assurance.

A Stephen Minister (as much as possible) is a faithful student of the Scriptures, attends

church and communes regularly, participates in Bible classes in order to possess and build a

greater knowledge of the Bible – and has a firm faith of his/her own. A Stephen Minister needs

these resources to encourage in their care-receiver a TRUST in God and His promises, and a

faith to BELIEVE, and to instill a HOPE that he/she will receive the blessings of these promises.

Stephen Ministry, Rev. Paul Wiegert continued:

There are times that a care-receiver will CRY as they describe

their experiences. That is when a Stephen Minister will PRAY with them,

offering them loving and understanding CARE. And, before you get the

Impression that a Stephen Ministry visit is full of gloom, there are many times that a LAUGH is

shared.

We would like these words to encourage you to learn more about our mission of minis-

try, or to offer to be a Stephen Minister, or to ask for help – for yourself, a friend, or a relative.

You can contact Pastor Abraham, Rev. Wiegert, or a Stephen Minister, if you are interested in

being a Stephen Minister or if you know of someone who needs help with a particular prob-

lem. To repeat, our commitment is to SERVE.

Rev. Paul H. Wiegert

SENIOR MINISTRY Pat Wiedemann, Chairman

Attention all theater goers! On Sunday, March 12th, you will be able to

find on the counter in the Gathering Room the signup sheet for attendance

to our next Playhouse matinee event.

We have put down a deposit on 26 seats for the Sunday, April 30th per-

formance of “A Second Helping” at 2:30PM. This play is the sequel to the

play from last year entitled the “Church Basement Ladies”. The ticket price

is $22.00 and tickets can be purchased from Karan Wedlund either by cash or check made

out to her.

As in the past, we will be serving pizza and beverages in Fellowship Hall after the perfor-

mance.

We are limited in seating so the sooner you signup and buy your tickets the better. There

will be more information about carpooling and such in the April newsletter.

Caregiver Coffee Hour meets on Wednesday, March 15th at 2:00pm in the

Gathering Room. Those of us who have been meeting for the last year feel we

have benefited greatly from the companionship and comfort that the hour

brings. And yes, we laugh a lot, it is not all gloom and doom and you do not

have to talk if you don’t want to. So, whether you are a past or present caregiv-

er or not, we invite you to come join us for coffee and fellowship.

DON’T FORGET TO TURN CLOCKS AHEAD ONE HOUR AT MIDNIGHT

SATURDAY MARCH 11TH.

Pastor Andrew, continued from page 1:

We fall before Christ because we know (yes, know) that He will pick us up, heal

our wounds and shower us in promises of our salvation. So Lent is a pretty good gig,

and I urge you to participate largely in all that it means to those who are saved. First

and foremost, share in the richness of the season by bringing me your beautiful fore-

heads on March 1st. If you are unable to attend the 6:30 evening service that evening,

please know that I will be at the Fairfield Glade Library from ten to noon earlier that

day to distribute ashes there as well. If neither of those options work, let me know, and

perhaps I can bring you ashes at another time that day.

Lastly, please do not waste your time on things that repeatedly ruin your soul.

God bless you!

Pastor Andrew

Free Money: A simple way to ease our budget is as easy as signing up for KROGER COMMUNITY REWARD DOL-

LARS. Last year SLF was awarded over $500 from just 22 people. This year we have only 18 but would love to have

many more. If you are a plus card member just go to Kroger.com website & click on Community. Then click on In

Your Community. Scroll down to Community Rewards. Click on Enroll now. You may either re-enroll, sign in or cre-

ate an account. The site will ask you who you want to reward. Put in Shepherd’s Little Flock or the number 15029.

You must re-enroll each Fall. These rewards come from Kroger and do NOT affect your personal rewards. Every

little bit helps. Please take the time to sign up and tell your friends and family, too. Thanks so much.

13

Since my report to the February Congregational (Voters) Meeting was inadvert-

ently left out of the packet we received that day, I just wanted you to know that your

generosity throughout 2016 allowed us to contribute $1,500 to Mites and $2,171 to lo-

cal missions! The small but fruitful group of ladies in the Lydia Circle sewed and sent 34

quilts to Lutheran World Relief, 14 quilts to Bread of Life and 2 baby quilts to Plateau

Pregnancy! We received two Thrivent Seed Money grants to purchase supplies for 29

Sewing Kits, which were also sent to LWR. Thanks to our caring congregation, the

LWML was able to bless many hurting people in our community and around to world.

We appreciate your ongoing support of our many mission initiatives.

We invite you to come with us to Threads of Hope Thrift Store on Thursday, March

23rd for our next Mission in Motion event. We will do another “Push Day” for them,

where we sort seasonal clothing. We push through a mountain of bags of clothes as

the first step in processing them for sale. It’s a fun few hours, picking through other

people’s rejects to maybe find a treasure or two for ourselves - at a 10% discount! Of

course food is involved; they provide coffee, fruit and tasty treats, we bring our own

sandwiches. Watch for a sign-up sheet in the Gathering Place soon.

May is just around the corner, and, May not only brings spring, but Bling and the

Fling! It’ll be on Saturday the 20th. It’s time once more to go through your closets and

jewelry boxes, weeding out that Bling you still haven’t worn since last year. Ya’ know,

that old hat, scarf, purse or jewelry that continues to take up space but is never actu-

ally worn anymore? It’s time to purge! Free yourself from your clutter! You know you’ll

never wear it again - give someone else the opportunity to have some chic new ac-

cessory as you find joy in the knowledge that another person has the same great fash-

ion sense that you do! A collection box will be near the mailboxes.

We’re also seeking models for the Fling Fashion Show. Men & women, old & young

(this includes you, Youth Group). Threads can outfit folks of every size & shape, from

the brawniest (Don G) to the tiniest (Dorothy B). Threads has something fashionable for

everyone! Don’t miss this opportunity to strut your stuff in slick new fluff and shine like

the star you are! Talk to me ASAP - we only have time for a few models, and we need to start planning early this month!

The February Men’s Breakfast: The Valentine’s Day Meeting had 55 ladies and gen-

tlemen attending the annual February Men’s Breakfast which invites all the ladies

of the church. You know love was in the air!

We NEED you on our WELCOMING COMMITTEE!

One of our most important ministry’s here at Shepherd of the Hills is our Greeters. It doesn’t

seem like it should be that important does it? I will tell you from our personal experiences at

other Lutheran churches, SOTH is one of the most welcoming. It is not by accident. We are a

very friendly, caring congregation and that comes through to any-

one who visits our church.

Now, knowing how important it is to have greeters at our doors wel-

coming members and visitors alike, PLEASE come forward and sign

up to meet and greet once a month, or whenever you are available.

There is a sign up sheet in the Gathering Place.

It is time for others, not just the same volunteers, to step forward.

Try it, you’ll like it!!!

NEWSLETTER DEADLINE: Articles for the newsletter must be submitted by the 20th of the

month or we cannot guarantee it will be included in the next Staff issue.

Please submit all articles and photographs electronically to Judy Bow-

man and/or Sue Moosekian!

Practices are each Wednesday as follows:

Bells begin @ 5:00 PM

Choir begins immediately after Wednesday night service.

We welcome anyone willing to serve the Lord and make a with a joyful

noise. You do not need to be able read music to participate in bells!!

Music Ministry Rick Weyhrich, Music Director

How many Lutherans does it take to change a light bulb? For the hanging lights in the sanc-

tuary, at least 2. We don’t have any excuses, but we got reasons. In the photo you’ll see Bill Hin-

terman on the ladder and the other guys holding the ladder steady which is set up on the pew

cushions (not exactly OSHA approved).

I wonder how many lights there are indoors and outdoors of our church facilities? Maybe

someday when the Board of church property members don’t have anything on our work list,

we’ll go around to all the buildings and take a count. It is rare if we don’t have at least one light

to work on from week to week.

Our fire pit “comes in handy” when we accumulate a lot of scrape wood from our remodeling

or building projects. We have an annual “burn permit” from the Fire Department. Any time we

wish to burn the Fire Department must be notified for their approval.

We continue to thank the Lord for giving us the ability to do our work.

Noteworthy News – All our classrooms will be at their max capacity this month and our

3 stars rating is back. What a wonderful job our staff has done and continues to do

with our little children. We have some new staff and are glad that they are with us.

We are sorry that Ms. Miranda has left for a new adventure, but wish her well.

Every year, I have an opportunity to teach at the Methodist Early Childhood Con-

ference. The conference is for their teachers in early childhood. This year I will be

teaching on 2 subjects: one of the sessions is how important team work is and how to

strengthen their centers and classroom by using staff’s passions and strengths, the

other area that I will be focusing on is bringing religion into the classroom.

This month I will be attending the mid-south districts’ administrator and principal

meeting. We have been meeting every other month to discuss certain topics of inter-

est. This month the morning session we will focus on education and leadership then in

the afternoon we will discuss the importance of the churches roles.

What’s Happened – On Friday, February 14th we had a “Jesus Loves Me” party. We

played games, sang songs about Jesus love, and ate our Valentine treats.

What’s Happening – On Thursday, March 17th we will be having a “green party” for St.

Patrick’s Day. We will be celebrating all the good “green” foods like broccoli and

green apples wearing our favorite green outfits. We will start planting our seeds for our

gardening area.

Focus on the Flock– Celebrating a birthday this month:

We Wish Happy Birthday and God’s blessings to:

Claire who will be 4 on the 1st

Lynkin who will be 4 on the 6th

Hailey who will be 3 on the 11th

Andalyn who will be 2 on the 25th

Will who will be 2 on the 30th

We want to welcome Neyland and his family to our flock.

Creative Curriculum –

Our religion curriculum focus: Having Faith in God

The letters for the month are: Hh and Ss

Our themes will be: Being Healthy and Spring

Our monthly Bible verse is: Luke 6:37 Forgive and you will be forgiven

Reminders – We will finishing up our pizza fundraiser this month. If you are wanting to

purchase any pizza kits, see Sabrina in the SLF office or call. Money is due by March

10th.

Thank you – To all of our community helpers that have come in and demonstrated their jobs to our chil-

dren. To the City Police, the police dog and the fire department for coming and showing us what you

do. Thank you to Christy who came and showed us how to brush our teeth.

Pastor Andrew is leading us in a read-

ing of Dr. Luther's Large Catechism. It is

not really that large, and it's very read-

able. In this Christian classic, Dr. Luther

does an excellent job summarizing the

foundations of our faith. This project

was chosen because 2017 marks the

500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation. The dis-

cussions will be held during our normal Sunday School hour

beginning in February. All are invited. Please let Judy know

if you need a copy of the Large Catechism.
