Shering Weighing - History

The Shering Weighing Group Ltd was founded in 1946 by the late Ernest Shering. Integrity

and honesty were, and remain, the core values on which this family owned company is run.

During the early years the company focused on manufacturing small mechanical scales and

servicing most makes of industrial weighing equipment, including mechanical weighbridges.

The current Chairman and Managing Director, Douglas M

Shering, assumed the role of Managing Director at the age of 21 following the untimely

death of his father in 1971.

The following few years proved to be very difficult but by the end of the decade Shering

were emerging as "manufacturers of the World's finest weighbridges" followed by

unprecedented growth both in the domestic and global market.

With a new team in place Douglas Shering embarked on a strategy that led the company to

focus its strengths in weighbridge products, developing plans that revolutionised the

industry world wide.

Rather than follow the normal route of the weighing industry which was to purchase all the

various component modules from different suppliers around the globe, causing logistical as

well as service and support problems, Shering's philosophy reversed that trend by bringing

design, manufacture and service all in house.

This new direction gave Sheringunique flexibility and capability that was unmatched anywhere, enabling them to control

their own destiny and set new innovative product trends that were both revolutionary and of

high quality, bringing exceptional operational and financial benefits to customers.

During the 1980s Shering's revolutionary products strategy was quickly recognised by many

weighbridge manufacturers throughout the world leading to several license agreements

being signed in countries such as Saudi Arabia, Germany, Portugal, Italy, Indonesia and the

Philippines. This allowed licensees to incorporate Shering patented technologies, giving

them significant technological advantages that were previously not available to them.

In the early 1990s Shering opened a brand new

purpose built headquarters and manufacturing facility in Dunfermline, Scotland, equipped

with state of the art technology to cope with growing demand for their weighbridge

products.

Further recognition of Shering's unique status came when we won the Grant Thornton and

British Airways Business Achievement in Europe Award as well as being one of

thefirst weighing companies in the world to achieve ISO9001 quality accreditation.

Shering were also the very first company to achieve European Weights & Measures

approval under the new OIML R 76 regulations, enhancing our reputation for being the most

innovative and forward thinking weighbridge company on the market.

Shering are in the business of providing a totally inclusive service for our customers. That

means supporting our products for their lifetime, for which we offer a range of five

maintenance contracts called Select Services, covering basic preventative maintenance

through to a full breakdown package.See table at the base of this page.

We have a network of highly skilled engineers around the UK, together with approved

agents in other countries, all with access to genuine Shering components. At our

headquarters in Dunfermline we have specialist service co-ordinators to provide their

expertise to both engineers and customers with Shering products. As well as being able to

discuss a problem by phone they can usually access your instrumentation and computer

equipment remotely and so be able to see exactly what you are looking at.

Our headquarters also house the technicians to repair and

reprogramme any piece of Shering instrumentation or display equipment, so minimising the

time it is out of use.

Additionally our engineers will normally be able to give you a replacement while yours is

being repaired, depending on your level of maintenance contract.

Shering also operate our own mobile calibration units,

allowing us to provide a flexible response to your needs for testing and calibration of all

weighing equipment. All our engineers are approved Self Verifiers, which means that we do

not need to rely on your Local Trading Standards to verify your weighing equipment

following installation, repair or servicing, so minimising any delays in restoring it to full

operation.

While our first priority is to customers with Shering weighing equipment, as that is our area

of absolute expertise, we are also able to provide maintenance cover for weighing

equipment from other manufacturers. Normally this would be as part of a wider

maintenance contract with customers who have a mixture of Shering and other

manufacturers' equipment. However we will be happy to consider providing maintenance for

non-Shering equipment, subject to the availability of spare parts. It may be that we would

recommend, for example, that you replace the instrumentation of a non-Shering

weighbridge with Shering instrumentation, for which we can guarantee the highest level of

maintenance.

Our mobile calibration units are also available for external hire for use with non-Shering

weighbridges and other weighing equipment. Please contact the Shering Test Unit on 01383
